to stay right here

Summary:

“It’s funny that you think I’ll ever be leaving your side again,” Yachiyo sighs theatrically, pitching her voice up and collapsing to the floor, hand on her forehead and all. Iroha stares. “Yachiyo has been toiling away so hard, and her hardworking, workaholic girlfriend is still afraid of abandonment!”

“Is this your idea of a guilt trip?” Iroha asks, smile tugging at her mouth so hard it almost hurts.

Work Text:

“I-ro-ha,” Yachiyo says, “you’re allowed to sleep, you know.”

“I just did,” Iroha raises her head to squint at the screen. “What do you call the past five hours I spent conked out earlier?”

“You should sleep more than that,” Yachiyo insists. From her shoulder, Fushi gives Iroha a look that looks vaguely disapproving. Iroha suspects it’s more about Yachiyo’s concern causing distress than any well-meaning kind of disapproval. “You said you’d do better!”

“And here I am, sleeping and eating well,” Iroha waves a hand, picking up a screwdriver. “I even went out drinking with my brother and his friends the other day, didn’t I? High school Iroha has nothing on the Iroha of now.”

“Such a hard worker,” Yachiyo coos. Iroha keeps her head determinedly turned away, still embarrassed by how Yachiyo’s—well, everything gets to her so easily. Knowing she waited that long for Iroha sort of does fry her brain a bit. “And hard workers need to rest more! I’m not going anywhere, I’m an AI—trapped right here in your lab.”

“Bold-faced lies, you could go anywhere you wanted, that’s how you got here to begin with,” Iroha accuses. “Really, Yachiyo, I’m fine—”

It’s not like she needed that kind of reassurance, but it makes her feel—something hard to name, something warm and sparking bright, to hear that, anyhow. “You are so bad at this, Yachiyo, really.”

“Worth a try,” Yachiyo pouts. Iroha can’t prove it, but she feels like that lately, Yachiyo’s Kaguya-like tendencies have been popping out even more.

Well. They’re both equally irresponsible and love getting under Iroha’s skin, so.

“Worth a try,” she agrees, and bursts into laughter. Yachiyo’s laugh still sounds like a tinkling bell, but there’s a boisterous to it reminiscent of Kaguya’s. “Wait—girlfriend?”

She only laughs harder.
