Chapter Text
The day that upturned Grace’s any sense of normalcy started out pretty normal, for someone who got sent out to space on a suicide mission against his will.
He woke up, got changed, ate, the usual routine. Nothing out of the ordinary, not even a new discovery, though that was quite rare these days. They were so close to getting back to Erid (three months and three weeks to be exact), so much so that the planet had recently come into view when Grace looked out the window. And yet, nothing new had happened for weeks.
So when Grace’s idle chattering was interrupted by a loud crash in the airlock, it definitely came as a shock. He froze, going almost ridiculously still, and even though he logically knew that nothing there could hurt him - nothing else alive was on the ship - he still couldn’t stop the bolt of fear that pierced through his stomach.
“Why is Grace not moving, question?” Rocky demanded, scuttering around the lab. “Is a biological response, question? If Grace scared and can not move, Grace can not protect himself. Stupid, stupid, stupid.”
“Rocky, please stop moving,” Grace begged quietly, his hand out towards the alien in an attempt to get him to hold still. He did. It was completely silent other than the hum of the ship.
And then a robotic voice cut the silence.
