Two Person Audience

Summary:

You can't fall asleep, so you go outside and serenade the moon. Someone else eventually decides to join the audience, too.

Notes:

Hi. First fic. I'll possibly live to regret this (no I won't). This does lean more towards OC than Reader Insert though, to be warned beforehand. Thank you and goodnight.

Work Text:

The circus's buzzing never ceased, but lessened to an extent.

And that was true for Caine as well.

Though his hands never seemed to rest, the noise of a rubix cube clicking from between his palms, his face told another story. He lazily flicked through his ever-present, ever-watchful 'eyes', only to see you open your door.

You never noticed the gaze, tiptoeing down the corridor and disappearing around a corner.

After a couple of minutes, when you didn't come back, Caine pinged for your location.

Outside.

Right by the amazing digital lake.

Same as every night, since the first week that you had joined the circus.

He waited, with bated breath, debating whether to check in on you, before teleporting next to the Moon.

You sat in the moonlight, back leaned against a tree, strumming away at a guitar as you sung, your flat tail flicking like a metronome, keeping at a slow beat that wasn't there.

"- carefully, I was going to live."

He sat down, a little off to the side of the Moon, exchanging a glance with her, before his attention fell back on you.

"You wouldn't leave 'til we loved in the morning, you'd learned from movies how love aught to be,"

You didn't notice that the size of your audience doubled...

"And you'd say you love me, and look in my eyes, but I know, through mine you were looking in yours,"

And that this was the most content he'd seen you.

"And did you know that the Liberty Bell is a replica silently housed in its original walls?"

You didn't stutter.

"And while it's dreams played music in the night, quietly, it was told to believe."

Your form, which he had grown accustomed to be ever-buzzing with as much pent up static as his, was solid...

"I always wanted to die clean and pretty, but I'd be too busy on working days, so I am relieved that the turbulence wasn't forecasted,"

And your tail wasn't flicking behind you like an agitated snake, this action being slow and deliberate.

"I couldn't have changed anyways,"

You stared out at the water that rippled on the lake.

"I am relieved that I'd left my room tidy..."

You hummed the last word of the song, and once the strumming stopped, the quiet static stretched onwards, lingering for a little too long.

"I see we have a new member of the audience joining us, tonight."

Caine snapped out of his thoughts, your eye crinkling warmly up at him.

"What brings you here to my lovely little venue, Mr. Ringmaster?" you joked.

He gently floated down to ground level, his eyes now at the same level as yours.

"I see you leave your room every night, and you always seem to come here, so I just..." he faltered.

You purred out a 'hmm' thoughtfully, fingers playfully picking at the guitar strings with a shrug.

"Well, I'm glad that you joined us. I'm just here until I get tired, it's... peaceful."

You paused.

"You know, It's going to be a while, and I don't mind the company, if you'd like to stay." The words came out softer than you hoped.

He raised his top jaw in surprise.

Nobody ever asked him if he'd like to stay.

"I'd like to." he nodded, his eyes wide.

Taking his chance, he summoned a red striped picnic blanket and some food with a snap of his fingers, while you tested some chords, taking the time to find out which ones would work for the next song, before quietly starting to sing again.

And sing you would, while your audience of two watched you.
