Work Text:
Ochako sat cross-legged on the floor, leaning on the couch in their quiet apartment. Sometimes, she had recurring thoughts about how she got to the place she was. She had finally made it as a pro hero— not so high in rankings, but that wasn’t her life goal. She inspired people and made them happy, was finally able to give her parents more than enough money to retire, she was married to the one and only, number 1 hero, Dynamight, and they were blessed with the most beautiful daughter in the world: Himiko Bakugo.
The baby monitor not far from them hummed softly with static, and there were tiny socks hanging over the arm of the couch. She was hunched over her laptop, staring at the bright screen in front of them with dead eyes. Beside the laptop was a stuffed envelope of documents and scattered papers across the table.
”Why,” she said slowly and a little above a whisper, “does this require so much information?”
Beside her, Katsuki briefly glanced at the laptop on the couch, folding laundry Ochako had finished around thirty minutes ago.
”Government crap.”
”Mm.”
The baby monitor crackled softly, and they both froze automatically. Three months into parenthood and had developed basically the same survival instinct as they had when they were under a whole war. It was almost the same— sleepless nights, battles and smelling really bad.
But it was kind of incredible seeing the number one hero of Japan look genuinely terrified of a sleeping infant waking up. She had seen him fight villains and not look scared at all. He’d been stabbed through the gut and did not look like this.
They sat there, completing chores, filling out documents for their newborn, and organizing the ones they already had.
Ochako leaned against the couch cushions, exhaustion settling deep into her bones. She loved being a mother more than anything. She loved the tiny yawns and the way their daughter instinctively grabbed Katsuki whenever he held her, but dear god, nobody had warned her how tired she would be.
As she filled out one of the last forms, she sat up slightly at the sight of one of the sections.
Towards the top of one of the document, were a items to fill out, right under the section labeled:
LEGAL GODPARENT / DESIGNATED GUARDIAN
Under there, she had to fill out the name(s), contact numbers, occupations, relationships and more.
”Hey,” she looked up at him, unsure what to type.
”Mhm?”
Katsuki glanced at the screen, brows furrowing.
“Hm,” he said. “Stupid. As if we’d die.”
She laughed lightly. ”We are pro heroes, Kats.”
He leaned towards her, expression flattening slightly as he read through paragraph underneath.
In the event both legal guardians are deceased, missing, permanently incapacitated, or otherwise unable to maintain custody, guardianship rights may be transferred to the following designated individual pending court approval.
It wasn’t like they’d never thought about it before, they were both heroes. Hell, it was countless times that she and Katsuki nearly died. Even Katsuki himself died while they were teenagers. They both thought about death constantly, but it was different now. Before, danger belonged to them only, but now, there was another life attached to it. A life that was small enough to fit against Katsuki’s chest while sleeping, a life that depended on them for everything.
“What should we put?” she asked, adjusting her posture. ”Your parents?”
Katsuki scoffed. “That old hag would turn the kid into a villain. She got lucky with me.”
“I don’t know about that,” Ochako rolled her eyes. “She’s not too bad. She’d raise Himiko well.”
“She threw a shoe at my head when I was four.”
“She loves you.”
“She threw it hard.”
Well, Ochako had no argument to that. Mitsuki adored their daughter, she was completely obsessed with her. But Katsuki had admitted once, very late at night during one of the baby’s sleepless weeks, that he didn’t want his child growing up in a house full of screaming the way he did. It’s stressful and not the kind of environment that neither of them wanted.
He sat quietly, clearly in thought. “Your parents?”
That had been her first thought too. But they were older now. Her father’s back wasn’t what it used to be after years of construction work, and her mother had started to have trouble hearing. They loved their granddaughter more than life itself, but the idea of handing them full responsibility for raising a child all over again felt unfair in a way.
“They're too old,” she said softly. “I don’t think they could handle it.”
He nodded, understanding what she meant.
Ochako reached over quietly and squeezed his wrist once.
“So,” she said quietly. “Not our parents.”
“Obviously.”
“Maybe one of our friends?” she suggested.
“Deku would burst into tears if we asked him,” he muttered. “You know it”
“I’m tired,” she sighed. “Let’s do this tomorrow?”
”Whatever you say, Angel Face.” he yawned, crouching down and kissing her on the forehead. “I’ll check on Himiko.”
—
By Saturday afternoon, Ochako and Katsuki had filled out almost every form. Medical authorization, quirk contingency plans, and an insurance plan. But the both of them were still stuck on the godparent section. Mostly because every time they tried to discuss it, the conversation somehow turned into them disqualifying everyone they knew.
One day, they had made one mistake, which was having this discussion in front of Mina. In fairness to them, they hadn't even realized she was there.
Himiko had finally fallen asleep after an hour-long battle of them trying to get her to her afternoon nap, so the apartment had gone quiet enough that both of them completely forgot the balcony door was cracked open.
Which was why Mina Ashido currently stood frozen halfway through a creaking door, holding a pink gift bag and wearing the expression of someone who had just discovered state secrets.
“…Godparents?” she whispered dramatically.
Ochako screamed, and Katsuki nearly detonated the kitchen light.
“Mina, what are you doing here?!” Ochako whisper-yelled immediately, panic flashing across her face as she instinctively glanced toward the baby monitor.
“I was bored,” Mina defended. “Thought I’d stop by.”
“Where’s Kiri??”
“Oh, he’s on patrol.” she shrugged before holding up a bag proudly. “And I brought gifts!”
Katsuki looked seconds away from homicide.
“You freaks are picking godparents?!” Mina hissed excitedly, completely ignoring the danger to her life. “That is HUGE.”
Ochako immediately pointed accusingly at her. “You are not allowed to tell anyone.”
She gasped like she’d been insulted personally. “Ochako. Be serious. I’m your best friend.”
Katsuki snorted loudly and Mina whipped toward him instantly. “Excuse you, I’ve known her longer emotionally.”
“The hell does that mean?”
“It means she tells me things.”
“She married me.”
“Debatable choice.”
Ochako physically pushed a hand over her face before either of them could escalate.
—
The next forty-eight hours felt a lot like a war all over again. Except she was watching it and not fighting in it, and the battle was between all her former classmates.
At 8:13 AM the next morning, someone started aggressively knocking on their apartment door hard enough that Katsuki nearly dropped the baby bottle he was warming.
“She just fell asleep,” Ochako whisper-yelled in horror.
Katsuki opened the door looking genuinely prepared to commit violence.
Kirishima stood there holding an enormous stuffed dragon almost the size of himself.
“…Why are you here?”
“Just visiting my favorite future goddaughter!”
“The hell do you mean future—”
“Also,” Kirishima added casually while removing his shoes, “I think emotional stability is really important for kids.”
Katsuki narrowed his eyes immediately. “Get out.”
Then came Yaoyorozu not more than a few hours later, who had managed to send Ochako a handmade infant emergency kit, a twenty-page document titled EARLY DEVELOPMENTAL MILESTONES, an incredibly polite note about how “raising children requires a dependable support network, and a tiny dress for the baby that was somehow a designer brand.
The two of them stared at the package in silence for almost a full minute, wondering how she was able to come up with all this in a day.
“Jesus Christ.”
“She attached citations,” Ochako sighed.
By day two, it became impossible to deny that everyone was campaigning. Subtly at first, then significantly less subtly.
Iida arrived carrying an absurdly expensive air purifier “for the baby’s lungs,” then casually mentioned he already owned multiple properties in safe residential areas. He sounded very boastful for someone who would constantly lecture them to be “humble heroes” during high school. Deku managed to join in— he had bought them a whole stroller.
Tsuyu quietly dropped off homemade meals, cleaned their kitchen without being asked, got Himiko to stop crying within four minutes, then left before anyone could properly thank her.
Ochako noticed Katsuki watching the door thoughtfully afterward.
“…She’s winning,” he admitted quietly.
Tokoyami got dragged into it, not even meaning to be a godparent in the first place. Dark Shadow, however, caught word and had managed to make both her and her daughter laugh.
Once, there had been frantic knocks. Katsuki was the one to answer it, and immediately shut the door.
”Who was it?”
”Guess,” he deadpanned at her.
Before she could even think to answer, a series of screams echoed from the other side of their front door, something Ochako immediately recognized.
”Grape Rape—“ he screamed, “NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS WILL I LET MY DAUGHTER GROW UP EVEN HALF AS HYPERSEXUAL AS YOU ARE.”
—
The final disaster happened Saturday night, their U.A. reunion dinner. In theory, it was supposed to be casual. Everyone met every few months anyway now that adulthood made spontaneous hangouts harder. That was hard to adjust to. Before, if Ochako wanted to see or talk to any of her classmates, all she had to do was walk a few steps or climb a couple stairs. Usually they rented out private restaurant rooms so they wouldn’t get mobbed by fans or reporters.
This time, however, the second Ochako walked in holding the baby carrier, she realized immediately that absolutely nobody here intended to behave normally.
“She smiled at me.” Kaminari argued
“She had gas.”
“Okay but statistically she smiles most at me.”
“That’s because you make the same noises as children’s television,” Jiro replied.
Mina slammed both hands dramatically onto the table.
“Alright,” she announced. “Let’s settle this.”
Ochako already looked exhausted. “Please don’t.”
“Too late.”
“Why should YOU become Himiko Bakugo’s legal guardian?” Mina pointed dramatically around the table before talking extremely fast. “In case of Ochako and Bakugo’s, possible but god forbid, deaths. GO!”
“Oh my god,” Ochako whispered. Katsuki looked ready to climb out the nearest window.
Shockingly, people actually answered.
“I’m dependable,” Iida started immediately.
“You’re stressful,” Kaminari interrupted.
“I AM RESPONSIBLE.”
“You color-code emergencies.”
“Because emergencies REQUIRE organization!”
Mina pointed at Tsuyu next.
Tsuyu sipped her drink calmly. “I already know how to take care of children, kero.”
Deku, clearly taking this most seriously of all, pulled out an actual notebook. “I made a pros and cons list.”
Katsuki physically put his head in his hands. “Of course you did.”
He looked genuinely confused. “Kacchan, this is an important legal decision—”
“Nerd.”
”Okay, but seriously,” Hagakure pitched. “She likes me the most.”
“She can’t even see you!”
“Fine, but I’m the reason they got together in the first place.”
“NO YOU ARE NOT!”
”All you did was snoop around!” Katsuki scoffed.
”See, even Katsuki agrees,” Kirishima started, “—that it was me who got them together.”
“I did not say that.”
”I’m the one who got Bakugo to stop being emotionally constipated.” Kirishima argued, completely ignoring him.
“You are all thinking too small,” Aoyama announced dramatically, placing a hand against his chest. “The true architect of romance… was me.”
“Aoyama,” Jiro said, very slowly. “You never...”
“Wrong.” He interrupted, pointing upward like he was revealing a murder mystery.
“Who created the seating arrangement during the first-year dorm Christmas gathering?”
Nobody answered as he smiled victoriously.
“Me.”
“…What?”
“I recognized ze tension,” he continued dramatically. “The yearning. The emotional sparkle.”
“Wait a minute,” Sero reminded him, remembering their seating arrangement. “You sat them together because Bakugo threatened to blow up the kitchen if he had to sit next to Mineta,”
“LOVE FINDS A WAY.”
The discussion continued on, and Ochako looked around slowly as her daughter fussed softly in her arms, as around twenty grown adults argued about who loved her most. More and more ‘evidence’ from high school had been brought up, as if that would help any of their cases. Their first sports festival, the licensing exam, hospital visits, internships, and more.
She laughed helplessly at the noise around her before glancing beside her. Katsuki was already looking at her.
The noise around the table faded for her, just a little. The funniest part about all these arguments was that all of them were wrong.
Well, not entirely wrong. Their classmates had pushed and teased, forced interactions and dragged them to parties. But the real reason they had ended up here, something she thought about a lot, had never really been about anyone else. Their feelings for each other had started privately, before anyone else figured it out.
She wouldn’t say that though. It was somewhat entertaining watching everyone argue. She couldn’t help but smile, watching her former classmates, her friends, the people who had fought beside her as they were all teenagers. The truth is, if something ever happened to them, their daughter would never be alone anyway.
