Work Text:
Yurxi is not a fan of the cold. Aside from obvious reasons, the cold has always been connected to bad things happening to her.
When she failed that mission? It was snowing.
When she broke a bone for the first time? It was freezing.
And the next time she saw her coworkers after the incident at the library? Their bodies were as cold as ice.
She doesn't like thinking about the past. But sometimes her mind can't help but dwell on it. It's like a non-lethal tumor that refuses to get out of her brain no matter how hard she tries. She wants and does her best to forget, to become a better person and the best version of herself but even determined people like her have their lowest moments. It's unavoidable.
It was raining outside.
Her heater was broken, and she has a crack in one of her windows. The blankets were too thin, so no matter how hard she tries she cannot get comfortable. It's horrible, and it sucks, but she must prevail. It's not like she has a choice in the matter anyway, what can she do?
She was quietly trembling on her bed; her eyes squeezed tightly shut as she attempted to at least savor the smallest bit of warmth. The harsh sound of rain hitting the windows was nearly deafening, and she could barely focus on anything else.
It was cold, too cold. What if something bad happened? Something bad always happens at nights like these, so it must happen now as well, right? It has to.
Her mind started to slowly spiral into misery. The images of the bodies of her colleagues flash through her mind.
She thought that it would never end, until she felt a hand press on her shaking shoulder.
Whoever's hand it was, it was big, and its touch was firm, thick fingers gripping her steadily through the blankets as its owner carefully shook her.
“......'right bird...?”
She heard a voice. She couldn't focus on it; her mind was still stuck in that nearly endless cycle of negativity.
The hand shook her once more, this time a bit harsher, and she finally opened her eyes.
Her vision was blurry at first. And a silhouette of a dark-skinned man standing at the edge of her bed was all she could see. She blinked a few times more, and she finally seemed to process who was snapping her out of it.
“You alright love? I just came home and I’m seeing ya shiverin’ like crazy!” Heathcliff's concerned expression greeted her once her vision finally cleared up. Yurxi's body turned towards him by just enough for the blanket to shift away from her again, sending another shiver down her spine.
“...Heathcliff...? You're home...” She managed to croak out, holding her arms out to him as if to beckon him closer. Heathcliff's skin was always as hot as a space heater, maybe if she could get him next to her it wouldn't be so cold anymore. She wouldn't be able to get hurt again.
Heathcliff sighed and did something with his feet that she couldn't see, (Probably taking his shoes off) before giving into her and slipping next to her in bed. Clothes and all.
“Shite lass, you're as cold as an eight pack after ten years innae freezer...” He mumbled as she immediately snuggled up to him, already leeching off his warmth like this affectionate overgown parasite. Yurxi finally managed a smile at his wording; his strange comparisons were always a thing she liked about him.
“Good thing you're here then...” She responded, pressing her face into his neck.
“Hm,” He hummed. “S’ppose so. I’ll let ya nap and we’ll have dinner at seven. Sounds good?” “Yeah, that sounds great...”
The pair shifted closer to each other, and Yurxi couldn't help but feel much better than she did before. It wasn't cold anymore, and maybe, with Heathcliff, she won't ever have to worry about it again.
