Chapter 1: A blooming fear of rejection

Chapter Text

"Hmm, it's been a while and author of this bl didn't release any new chapters...I probably should go to the book store and look for something new" Nakamura says as he begins to change his clothes for a quick trip outside.

You see, it's been a week since the summer break have started. Nakamura, as you might have guessed, didn't go out with Hirose at all...but there was something he was proud about! He got his number!! And even got a few messages from Hirose about his well-being! Hirose's consideration for his friends knows no bounds indeed!
Even just these small signs of affection, romantic or friendly they might be, were enough for Nakamura to kick his feet into the bed so hard that mattress got a few dents.
Anyway, we're going off script. So, new BL manga! It's been hard for nakamura to switch to something new. He's always a person that studies the manga so hard he might as well know more about it than the author themself! But not even the fury devoutness of such a fan can withstand the hardships of prolong waiting...hence why he is in the book store right now.

Approaching the usual alley Nakamura noticed something...or rather someone unusual standing over the bl mangas. It was an old man in messy attire, with what seems to be...a cross on his neck. *Religious people are not someone you see often in this region...why is he here?* Nakamura thought to himself, trying to walk past him as if he has no interest in these books, obviously trying to avoid conflict. But then the old man turns his head to the boy and starts calling him.

"Hey, you. Come 'ove here" old man calls.

Nakamura, although reluctant, comes over, fearing walking away might be even worse.

"So, tell me, do youngsters really read this crap? I mean, seriously, how the heck it is on the shelves of the book store? What kind of propaganda are they spreading? old man rants.

"I...I don't know, I never read those...not really my cup of tea" Nakamura answered, obviously not having it but trying to hold emotions in because...he is afraid. As almost every gay person Nakamura was made fun of because of his sexuality, and it so happens that he told a friend of his about it once and...well, let's just say that that friend wasn't really good when it comes to keeping secrets. So even though he really likes being gay and pretty proud of it, he is still afraid to show it off even to his friends.

"Hmh, if anything they should burn these books and lock people who act like this up until they act normal!" old man nearly yelled but not enough for most to hear. Nakamura clenched a fist, overwhelming with emotions, obviously wanting to get out of this situation, FAST.
"haha...yeah...anyway I should really g-" Nakamura mumbles but gets interrupted - "Anyway, kid, do you have a girlfriend yet?" Old man asked, obviously not caring about the Nakamura's reaction.

"Oh erm...no not really..I'm more of a study person, yk, always reading and...studying" Nakamura made up on the spot.

"Why? Yk, the younger you are the juiciest the meat" weirdly says old man, making Nakamura even more disgusted and scared. "I mean look at you, girls would fight for someone like you" creep says while putting his greasy hand behind Nakamura's neck...*what kind of weird fucking gesture as that?* Nakamura thinks before storming out of there without even saying a word back to this old fuck.

*It was so weird...I hate it I HATE IT* Nakamura shouts in head, clearly not caring about that new manga he wanted before. His thoughts are now occupied only with what that rotten rat said. "Propaganda", "...until they act normal", "burn these books", "Girlfriend" - these words were the only thing rolling in that high schooler's consciousness. And that weird touch...Nakamura hated it so much he still can't stop rubbing this place to clear it from that man's touch.

Nakamura was going around the city, not knowing where he is at this point...at some park it seems. He was trying to calm himself with breathing, while saying in his head that what that homophobe said was not true. But the anxiety still didn't go away. Intrusive thoughts were hard but Nakamura was holding up pretty good.

Suddenly, out of the blue Nakamura hears a familiar voice. "Hey, is that you, Nakamura?". *could this be...no, no NO. If Hirose sees me like this he will think I'm just an anxious creep, I can't-*. Hirose approached him before Nakamura could finish his train of thought.

"What a coincidence! Never would of thought you like going to the park! Are you waiting for the sunset?" Hirose asked, while sitting dwon on the other side of Nakamura on the bench.

"Oh erm...y-yeah, t-totally" *WHAT KIND OF RESPONSE WAS THAT?" Nakamura thought, thinking it was too rude.

"Oh dude, are you alright? You look totally pale. Do you need help? I can get you to the doctor if you want" Hirose says, remembering that is not the first time Nakamura looks like that, remembering the similar school accident.

"I-I'm fine, r-really! Sorry but I h-have to go, my mom just said she needs help in the house, s-so..." Nakamura made up at the spot again, making it sound like the clearest, most unoriginal lie ever told.

"Nuh-uh, not so fast" Hirose grabs Nakamura's hand as he tries to leave, sensing something is wrong. "I heard that kind of lie before, please, sit down, tell me what happened".

Nakamura sits down, frozen in place, not knowing what to do at all. *Do I tell him what happened, no...he will know. What if he's a homophobe as well? I mean, no, he said that he's not against people reading BL at all...but what if he's still weirded out by it?
What if he's against real people being gay? Such people exist...*

"Nakamura, what happened? I won't judge you, don't worry" Hirose said in his even more softer than usual voice, carefully putting a hand on Nakamura's back.

"Y-you're not lying, right?" Nakamura mumbled, not even sure what he meant by that. "Of course I'm not, we are friends, remember?"

Nakamura signed, preparing for the worst. "I-you know how I was in that bl alley at the book store...well, i-it's because I like reading that...because I..I'm gay" His face as read as the ripe tomato but he continues. "Today...I went there again to buy new
manga...and there was a man..with a cross on his neck..he said some nasty things about people like me..said I...I should get a girlfriend and touched me in the neck.." Nakamura says, unable to hold tears.

"I-If you don't want to talk to me I get that...I'm sorry.." He finishes, overtaken by the made up fear that Hirose might reject him for that.

"I-oh god I'm so sorry I...come here" Hirose's words go into whisper, as he hugs Nakamura, unable to think of any other way to comfort him.

"Don't apologize, I don't care if you're gay or not you're still my friend. I will support you to the end" Hirose nearly whispers in his ear as Nakamura cries in his crush's shoulder.

"As for that man, he's just a brain dead idiot..he and people like him will die alone, blaming the world for their own mistakes" Hirose reassures him, still holding Nakamura for a good minute or two.

After a couple of minutes Hirose releases Nakamura. "Do you feel better?" Hirose asks gently. "Y-yeah" Nakamura replies, wiping his tears.

"Let's go home together, we live in the same direction anyways so" Hirose suggests.

"Y-you don't have to...I've already caused trouble for you just now" Nakamura says.

"Trouble? You opened up to me, I should thank you for that! Now, let's go, it will be late once we get there" Hirose says, grabbing his friend's hand and going home with him.

It took them 2 hours to get home. Nakamura got home first, he had mixed emotions about what happened, but he didn't feel like it was bad particulary. Hirose felt a sense of relief and...happiness. Why? He always felt that Nakamura was hiding something, but couldn't put his finger on it. Now it seems he found that "something", so he felt like they've gotten closer.

Before bed Hirose texted Nakamura to make sure he was okay.

H:Hiii! Hope you're doing good. Btw forgot to tell you, don't worry I won't tell anyone!! I know it's a big secret so I'll keep it with myself to the grave! *tongue emoji*
N:haha, thank you. It means the world to me. No, really, thank you. You are the first to know it apart from my family and some...not so good people in the past
H:I'm honored! If you want, let's hang out together this week. I have plenty of time so...
N:I-I would love to! I'll text you later, okay? (this one text got Nakamura blushing as hell)
H:Okay! Good night *sleeping emoji*
N:Night(•‿•)

Hirose put his phone down. He was already in the bed so the only thing keeping him from tommorow was closing his eyes. But...he was lost in thoughts...

*Were Nakamura's eyes always been so...majestic?*
