Chapter 1: The Truly Terrible Date

Chapter Text

“Are you even listening to me, Sonic?” Amy’s voice pierced through the sound of the bleeps and boops of his gaming handheld. When he didn’t reply, she let out a frustrated growl. This was painfully typical of her so-called ‘boyfriend’. “Sonic, this is our one year anniversary! We’re here on a lovely date that I planned by myself. The least that you could do is get off your Gamebuddy.”

“Just give me a minute, Amy, I’ve almost beaten my high score! H-Hey!” Sonic’s eyes widened as Amy snatched the handheld out of his hand and turned it off with a huff. He groaned and ran a hand through his quills. “Seriously? All that progress, lost.”

“Sonic, don’t you realize how it makes me feel when I put all this effort into our ANNIVERSARY DATE, and you can’t even pay a single bit of attention to me? Don’t you love me?” Amy’s eyes fixated on the picnic blanket underneath her and the ants trailing one by one toward the spread of food that she had taken out of her wicker picnic basket. It took 2 hours to make and pack all of the food, yet all of it still lay uneaten before the pair of hedgehogs.

It wasn’t as if she had expected an immediate reply, but each second that went past filled her stomach with lead. The silence was deafening. Counting to ten, she looked up to see Sonic keeping his gaze steadily fixated on the sandwich tray in front of him. His face was unreadable. Counting to twenty, Amy froze as Sonic finally looked up at her. “Amy… Actually, I-”

The pink hedgehog shot up from the blanket. She didn’t need to hear it. She already knew what he was going to say, and the words would tear her apart. Tears quickly formed in her eyes as she looked away from Sonic. “Shut up! I don’t want to hear you say it! I… I can’t believe you, Sonic!” Amy’s feet began to move on their own, and the forest began to blur around her as she ran further and further away from the heartbreak. As she ran, she could feel twigs and leaves scrape her arms and legs, but she didn’t care. She’d run through the pain until she was far, far away.

It had taken so long for her to finally get Sonic to go out with her. It had taken longer yet for them to go on their first date. He never had any time for her. He never touched her, hugged her, never laughed with her… Never kissed her. How embarrassing! She was with him for a whole year and still never had her first kiss! Amy let out a sob, her lungs burning for air as she continued running through the forest.

Suddenly, as she shot out of some brush and into a clearing, she felt herself hit a small, soft wall. The two tumbled and rolled to a stop with a grunt. On top of Amy was her dear friend Cream. She’d forgotten how close to Vanilla and Cream’s house her picnic spot had been. Forgetting about the pain in her chest for a moment, she shot up and looked Cream up and down in concern. “Oh my gosh, Cream! Are you alright?!”

The soft rabbit blinked rapidly and stumbled up with a groan. “I-I think I’m okay. That hurt, Amy, why were you running so fas-” Cream’s eyes widened as she noticed Amy’s puffy nose and red eyes. “Have you been crying? What’s wrong, Amy?” With her gloved hand, Cream patted the top of Amy’s head softly.

It wasn’t very easy to explain to such a young Mobian, but Amy did her best. They sat together on a nearby park bench as Amy recounted what had happened on the picnic blanket. “So you see, I love Sonic and took him on a date, but… Sonic wasn’t interested. He didn’t want to hurt my feelings, so he led me on and didn’t tell me sooner. He hurt my heart. He didn’t mean to, it just w-wasn’t… Meant to be… I guess…”

Cream slowly nodded and patted her shoulder as tears freely flowed down Amy’s cheeks. Cream took out a handkerchief and tried to dry some of the wetness from her furry cheeks. “I understand, Amy, but don’t worry! You don’t gotta be so sad! There’s someone out there that’s WAAAAY better for you, I promise!”

Amy smiled gently at Cream. The little rabbit was always so cheerful and kind, not to mention helpful. Talking with her about the pain seemed to lessen it at least a little. “Thanks Cream, you’re a good friend. I’ll try not to worry about it.”

After a long conversation, the sun began to set behind the trees. Cream shot up and exclaimed, “Oh no! I forgot, I have to go home for dinner! Come have dinner with me, Amy! My mom won’t mind!” Outstretching her hand, Cream led Amy back to her home for a nice, comforting meal. She hoped that, whatever she could do for Amy, it would help her feel at least a little better after such a terrible anniversary day.
