reign of love (i can't let go)

Summary:

"Well, Bladie, you seem excited." Kafka said, more for his ears than anything.

"The contents of my script… are certainly appealing to me." Blade's tone was same as ever with Kafka, indulging her, restraining himself.

Kafka supposed that could only mean one thing, for Blade to be pleased with the script. They all knew of the end that he chased, the end that Elio promised him for joining the Stellaron Hunters. She had been witness to that moment, convincing him to come with them.

Before they set out on their respective scripts on Planarcadia and Penacony, the Stellaron Hunter gather for a night of quiet contemplation. Kafka thinks about what the future holds for Blade, and how she doesn't feel about it.

Notes:

anyone else scared/excited like crazy for 4.3 or is it just me. the livestream has been driving me mad for the last day and i needed to get this out of my system before it made me explode and also before the 4.3 story potentially proves me wrong on kafka's assumptions about blade's script. title comes from coldplay's "reign of love"

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

A few hours ago, Elio had delivered scripts to three of four Stellaron Hunters, letting them know that their parting would be soon.

Now, Kafka found herself within the walls of sweet little Firefly's room, the four of them gathered around her before they set out on their separate journeys.

"Be safe, okay?" Firefly says earnestly, as her head rested on Wolfie's.

"I'll be fine, Firefly, " Silver Wolf insisted. "Besides, it's nice to get my hands on my cartridge again." Their resident hacker had bared into Firefly's room first, making herself comfortable on the bed. The two of them looked cute, with Firefly watching whatever game had Silver Wolf's fingers flying across the screen this time.

Kafka wasn't worried about Silver Wolf. She didn't really know how to be, regardless, but Wolfie would be setting off alongside Blade, who clearly had a soft spot for her. The two of them would take care of each other until the script's end.

Speaking of their resident weapon— Blade had chosen to sit on the ground next to Kafka's chair, his head supported by the wooden legs of the chair. If he was uncomfortable, he certainly made no indication of it. Kafka reached down to weave her fingers in his hair. Unsurprisingly, he leaned into the touch.

"Well, Bladie, you seem excited." Kafka said, more for his ears than anything.

He takes a moment to respond— Kafka thinks his eyes might be shut, either to give the two lovebugs on the bed some semblance of privacy, or to savour the moment of peace before it was over.

It hadn't occurred to her then, how close she would grow to him. It certainly hadn't occurred to her that that broken blade they had found would be reforged into the most caring of the Stellaron Hunters.

Kafka had caught him slipping in to talk to Firefly alone earlier, their opposing pursuits giving them a better understanding of each other. It certainly wasn't unnoticed by anyone how insistent Blade was about feeding Wolfie, making sure to keep food stocked for her irregular eating times.

As for how he felt about Kafka, well…

"Be sure not to take any unnecessary risks in Penacony."

It was cute, the way he worried about her. She told him as much, giggling at the end of her sentence.

Blade hummed in acknowledgement. He paused before continuing, leaning just the tiniest bit away from Kafka's touch as he did. "It's hard not to worry about those you love…" He trailed off again, leaving Kafka to think about his words.

It wasn't hard to see that Blade loved them. He might've tried to pretend he didn't at some point, but the rest of them had seen his actions speak so much louder than his words (or lack thereof).

She wasn't even particularly surprised that she loved her— she kept him tethered, the tight leash around his neck grounding him and giving him direction. He bent to her will easily, even without Spirit Whisper. He indulged her requests for destruction and dates outside the script with the same easiness. He gave himself up to her, offering whatever she would take, wanting nothing in return. Kafka was happy to take from him, pleased to spend her nights with him, giddy to take scripts together.

Yet she could not bring herself to return the worry. Planarcadia seemed like it was about to take away her partner in crime, and all Kafka could feel was a sense of understanding. Blade would reach what he had chased for so long, and she could not begrudge him that.

All she knew was that the pang in her heart had been there since she had learned of Blade's wish. Losing him was written into Destiny. She had no will to fight it, no desire to deny it.

"Hey, can you guys go flirt somewhere else now?" Silver Wolf piped in, her voice quieter than usual. When Kafka looked away from the top of Blade's head, she realized that their little bug had fallen asleep, all while still leaning on Wolfie.

"Well, Bladie, I suppose we'll have to spend our night elsewhere," Kafka said, standing up from her spot on the chair and walking towards the door.

"As you wish, Kafka." Blade followed diligently as ever behind her, stopping only briefly to cast a glance back at the two girls so close to each other. Kafka would miss his quiet fondness, that much was for certain.

(And Kafka took great pleasure in the way Silver Wolf's face scrunched up at the two of them. She really was so easy to rile up.)

As she strolled back to her room, she pushed the thoughts of loss and love out of her head. Were this to be her last night with Bladie, well, she might was well have fun with him.

Notes:

thank you so much for reading this... the stellaron hunter family is so special to me (can you believe wolfie called them a family in that furbo reality show GOD THEY MAKE ME SICKK) i hope this didn't come off too out of character for any of them. i just wanted them to be soft with each other since they keep doing that in canon.
