Chapter 1: An unexpected afternoon

Chapter Text

It's four o'clock on a Friday afternoon, the Bellas just finished rehearsing for the day and everyone began to pack up.

Aubrey decided to stay behind and clean up since there was no practice tomorrow, and mainly because when Monday arrives she wants the area to be set and ready. She began arranging the chairs, unaware that somebody stayed behind.

"You really do like being prepared, huh?"

A voice comes from behind her.

She turns around and her gaze lands on Beca who was still standing besides the bleachers.

Aubrey sighed, straightening her posture before giving a small nod in response.

"It's good to be ahead of things."

Beca lets out a soft chuckle, setting her bag on one of the seats.

She walks towards the center where Aubrey was.

"Do you perhaps need help sweetheart?"

The woman asks.

Aubrey slightly tilted her head, her eyes narrowing.

"That doesn't sound bad, sure, why not-"

"And stop calling me that."

A faint smirk crosses the corner of Beca's lips.

Aubrey rolled her eyes, letting out a scoff.

"Wipe that smile off your face Mitchell."

Beca shrugs

"I'll think about it."

She grabs a chair, dragging it towards the stack of alligned chairs in the corner.

"So, do you have any plans for tonight?" The brunette spoke.

"Why do you ask?"

"Well, I was wondering if you'd wanna come to this new cafe, it's a few blocks away. The one Chloe mentioned mid-practice earlier."

Aubrey nods, recognizing the place.

"I don't have any plans, but what makes you think i'd wanna come?"

"Is there a way I can convince you then?"

A pause.

"Buy my food then i'll go with you."

"I wouldn't have invited you if I wasn't the one paying for the meal."

Beca chuckles.

"A gentlewoman now are we?"

A small smile appears on her lips, clearly intrigued.

"Have I not been every rehearsal?"

She raises her brows with a playful glint, before continuing to stack the chairs.

The two of them eventually finish arranging the seats.

"How the hell do you manage to do all this when you're alone."

Beca wipes the beads of sweat off her forehead with a hand towel she kept in her bag.

Aubrey took a sip of her water.

"It's not that difficult you're being dramatic."

She hands over her bottle towards the brunette.

Beca slightly narrowed her eyes, tilting her head with an amused look.

She reaches over and eagerly takes the bottle.

Aubrey catches her diverted look.

"Don't think much of it, I know you didn't bring yours because I saw you drinking from the water fountain during break earlier."

"And god knows if they're even safe to drink."

Beca lets out a small laugh before tilting the bottle back for a sip.

"Why were you watching me?"

The woman blurts out, making Aubrey freeze for a brief moment.

"I wasn't, I passed by and simply saw you. Nothing else."

"I appreciate your generous offer." Beca teases.

Aubrey scoffs, but there's a hint of playfulness to it this time.

She hands it back, her fingers lightly grazing the woman’s as she does.

A pause.

Aubrey’s expression faltered, a dazed look crossing her face as her heart began to beat unusally faster at the fleeting contact.

She cleared her throat and took the bottle in a rapid motion before clearing her throat.

Beca presses her lips together, trying to suppress a smile.

"Mitchell."

The blonde shoots her a warning glare.

"Sorry." Beca slightly chuckles.

"Let's go before I change my mind."

She says, grabbing her bag from the bleachers.

"Yep I figured."

Beca quickly picks up her own bag and follows alongside Aubrey who was already walking out.

"Are we walking or taking a cab?"

Aubrey asks.

"It's only a few blocks away, do your feet already hurt sweetheart?"

Beca laughs lightly.

The woman beside her rolled her eyes.

"You're insufferable I have no idea why I agreed to this."

"Because we're friends."

"Partially."

"What is that supposed to mean?" Beca chuckles.

Aubrey groans.

"Stop talking or I will seriously turn back around."

"Would you though?"

"Beca I swear to god-"

"Kidding!"

It didn't take them long to reach the cafe.

As soon as they enter they were greeted by a warm lighted, cozy and peaceful atmosphere with a faint song in the background.

Aubrey's eyes darted around her surroundings, like she was taking note of the area.

"You look like you've never been to a cafe before."

Beca blurts out, watching her with amusement in her eyes.

"I've never been to this one I can tell you that."

She checks her phone, briefly noting the time.

The two of them grabbed a booth in the corner.

Aubrey sat across from Beca.

They both sat there in awkward silence for a moment, and the blonde looked like she was about to kill herself for making this decision.

Beca fortunately spoke up to ease the tension.

"So, do you usually agree to go out with your ‘sort of’ friend?"

"Great way to start a conversation."

"Hey it's a good question."

"Yeah if you were trying to drive me away."

Beca lets out a small laugh, leaning back on her chair.

A smile crosses Aubrey's lips as she leaned forward to rest her elbow on the table.

"Actually, I have a question."

The blonde said.

"Ask ahead."

"Why did you still choose to stay despite having no interest in acappella?"

"This sounds like an interview, is this a question whether to decide if you'll kick me out or let me stay?"

"What- no. Just answer."

Beca laughs in amusement.

"Well, it's actually not that bad. You guys have grown on me and the competitions aren't too lame. I like feeling the thrill when they announce the winners too."

"Thats it? Booo, tomato tomato."

Aubrey leans back on her chair, letting out a chuckle.

Beca holds her hands up in a playful gesture, a laugh slipping out before dropping them back down.

"It isn't a terrible answer."

"I've heard better."

"Oh?"

They both laugh, the atmosphere much lighter than it had been earlier.

"Okay here's a question for you-"

Beca leans forward, resting her arms on the surface.

"Have you ever dated anyone?"

Aubrey's eyes slightly widened at the boldness.

"That's- compelling."

She crosses her legs and sighs, tilting her head slightly.

"Well, i've only been with one guy."

Beca raises her brows.

"I did not anticipate that, really? Come on."

"Dating is a waste of time, besides the Bellas keep me constantly busy especially upcoming competitions, then there's exams and other college stuff."

The woman nods, intrigued.

"You have an interesting lifestyle- so captivating yet boring in a way."

Aubrey lets out a chuckle.

"How about women?"

Beca blurts out.

"What about them?"

Aubrey raises a brow.

"Haven't you ever experienced what it's like to be with a girl- or atleast a hook up."

The blonde froze for a brief second, before shaking her head.

"Damn, that's depressing."

A waitress comes over, taking out a small notepad and a pen.

"We apologize for the wait, there was a minor inconvenience at the back that needed assistance. I'm sincerely sorry."

"It's alright, we aren't really rushing so no need to apologize." Aubrey spoke.

The waitress lets out a sigh of relief with a slight smile on her lips.

She takes their order and walks back to the counter.

Beca checks her phone, taking note of the time.

"So- anymore questions?"

The brunette looks up, a smirk appearing on her face.

"I don't like it when you look at me like that."

Beca chuckles.

"I do have one more question."

She says.

Aubrey nods.

"Truth or dare?"

A pause.

"Are you serious?"

The blonde lets out an amused laugh.

"Hm, then dare."

Beca's eyes beam, making the woman roll her eyes.

"You're infuriating sometimes with your expressions."

"I dare you to come back to my dorm with me, we can watch a movie- or I can show you a new remix that I just recently made."

Aubrey raises a brow, 'Well that's unexpected' she thought to herself.

"Out of all the things you could've dared me to do, that's what you choose?"

She lets out a small laugh.

"It'll be fun, besides Kimmy Jin stays out late with her friends like almost every night. She probably won't mind that I have a visitor."

"Who the hell is Kimmy Jin?"

Beca laughs.

"God you really don't listen to me during rehearsals.

"And I intend to keep doing so, as long as I don't hear your bickering ass."

The two of them stayed until 9pm, surprisingly enjoying eachothers company.

They shared a few laughs, the conversation settling into something comfortably casual.

When they stepped out the cafe, the cold air hit them in an instant.

And unfortunately, Aubrey forgot to bring her cardigan.

The breeze sent shivers through her body, and Beca immediately caught on.

She takes off her jacket and extends her hand towards the the woman.

Aubrey raises a brow, glancing at her.

"Don't be stubborn Posen, take it."

"Won't you get cold? I'm fine-"

"Bullshit, besides I can handle it."

A pause.

Aubrey takes the jacket, slipping it on.

The scent was undeniably difficult to ignore- it was like freshly brewed coffee mixed with vanilla.

"Anyways, about that dare. You still up for it?"

Beca asks, sliding her hands in her pockets.

The two of them began to walk back to campus.

"I guess it isn't that bad, there aren't any rehearsals tomorrow anyway."

A smile shoots across the brunette's face, which made Aubrey roll her eyes with a playful glint.

"You're enthusiatic, yet somehow entertaining."

They both let out a laugh.
