    Summary

In 1987, during a brief thaw of the Cold War, David Hollander falls in love with the right person at exactly the wrong time.

For a few impossible months in Montreal, David and Soviet exchange student Grigori Rozanov build a life in the space between closing doors before the pressures of reality tear them apart. One of them learns how to open another. The other spends the rest of his life standing in front of the one that shut.

Decades later, their sons inherit the consequences.

Spanning continents, generations, and thirty years of history, this is ultimately not a love story but a meditation on what happens after one falls apart. On the futures we lose. The ones we build instead. And the choices that echo outward through families for decades: whether loving deeply means accepting the risk of loss, or whether loss is proof that love itself is too dangerous to survive.

Because grief can either lead to a locked door or an open one.
