"We can't stay down here," Steph said immediately.
They were crowded together so tight that Cass was practically whispering into Steph's ear when she responded. "Hide from Firebug and his gang. Avoid provoking them until backup arrives with fire extinguishers. Stay safe and quiet. What's the problem?"
"The sewers are not a safe place to hide," Steph said. "Killer Croc's loose right now, remember? Not to mention any number of other bad guys might be hiding out down here, too. If we're trying not to cause a scene so Firebug doesn't freak out, then we shouldn't be hanging out in one of the number one Places Full Of Supervillains That Love Causing Scenes."
Steph shimmied forward, presumably to peer through the holes in the manhole, but she stilled when she brushed against Cass. Cass could see from the faint light coming down from above that there was a slight, almost imperceptible quiver in Steph's limbs.
"You're not thinking about Killer Croc right now," Cass pointed out. "You're thinking about my--"
"Shut up," Steph said, her voice strained. Her breath was coming ever-so-slightly faster than normal, and Cass knew it wasn't from exertion. "I'm thinking about nothing, okay? Nothing at all."
Cass made a mock pouty face at her. "Batgirls shouldn't lie. You are a bad batgirl."
Steph's voice was strangled when she replied, "Do you have to say it like that?"
