Work Text:

Boombox hummed softly along to his music, tapping his foot against the pavement. It had been a while since he’d last talked to Skateboard outside of the games, and they were about to meet up casually for the first time in…months maybe?

At this point, Boombox was already at the area they were going to meet, well before they were supposed to. But that was how Boombox was, always showing up obnoxiously early to things.

For example, a couple weeks ago, Valk had asked for an interview, and Boombox had shown up a whole hour before Valk had actually called for him.

As Boombox waited for Skateboard his long, puffy tail swished under the bench, swaying to the beat of his song. He always had a thing for music, yeah, it made sense, his gear was the Boombox, but eh. He had a feeling that even if it wasn’t, he’d still be obsessed with music.

“Yo! Boombox!”

The green phighter perked up, his expression lightening under his visor. “Heya Skate” He greeted, turning down the music with a warm smile. “You’re early. I thought I would be early, but you look like you’ve been here for at least thirty minutes!” Skate teased, sitting down on the bench, leaning his skateboard against himself.

“Eh, I’m always fashionably early.”

“I guess you could call it that…” Skateboard rolled his eyes, chuckling softly. “Anyway, what have you been up to Boom?” Boombox blinked under his visor, his tail flicking to the right at the question. “Oh nothing much, the phights have been keeping me pretty busy” Skateboard nodded, a soft hum escaping his lips. “Yeah, well, at least they’re really entertaining.” Boombox nodded slowly, agreeing silently, his claws drifting down to fiddle with the chain on his belt.

“So, what did you want to do today?” Despite the two of them arranging this meeting, they never really planned any of the details other than they were ‘Gonna Meet Up’.

“Ah…Well, I don’t know? Walk around, maybe skate. Oh! I could teach you how to skate.” Skateboard seemed ecstatic. Boombox knew about how joyous his buddy got whenever skateboarding was involved. Like him and music he supposed.

“Pfft- Alright Skatie, I’ll let you teach me. I’m gonna be horrible at it though.” Boombox conceded, eyes shimmering on his visor.

Skateboard nearly jumped up, eyes glowing with enthusiasm as he grabbed his skateboard, holding his hand out for Boombox to take. The green phighter rolled his eyes, grabbing his own gear before taking his friend’s hand. He enjoyed seeing Skateboard like this. It had been a while since he’d seen the red demon so happy about something. It must have been before the Phights!, when Coil and them still lived in the Playgrounds.

With the two of them running, it took barely anytime to reach the skatepark. The same skatepark Skateboard first learned how to skate at.

-

The rest of the day went by in a flash, Boombox trying and, frankly, failing miserably, at skating while Skateboard helped him, trying to hold back giggles. It wasn’t until the sun started setting that the two finally stopped.

“Oh Boomy…You’re really horrible at this.” Skateboard laughed, lying back against the fence, watching as Boombox tumbled awkwardly off the skateboard.

“S-Shut up! I said I would be bad!” He shot back, although there wasn’t any malice to his tone. “And you really weren’t lying!”

Boombox groaned, rolling his eyes and bringing the skateboard back to his friend. “Alright, that’s enough. I’m not trying to hurt myself here.” Skateboard took his gear back, putting it away and walking side by side with Boombox, heading towards the exit of the skatepark.

“Man, you know what we haven’t had in a while?”The red demon suddenly asked, turning his head to face the shorter one.

“A sleepover.”

Skateboard was right. It had been a long time since they’d been to each other’s living spaces, let alone a sleepover of any kind. “Yeah, you’re right.” Boombox agreed with a nod of his head.

That wouldn’t be horrible. Honestly, it would be nice to have Skateboard over for the night. “Wanna have one at my place?” The suggestion hung in the air for a second before the red phighter nodded, tail swishing at the thought. “Yeah. I’d be down for that.”

-

Boombox’s apartment was cozy, simple, basic stuff. The only large sign of personality would be the small recording setup in the corner of his bedroom.

“Eh, sorry about it not being much.” He awkwardly stated, reaching a hand to rub his neck. “Don’t worry, you’re good, my apartment’s not much better.” Skateboard stated with a chuckle, ruffling the smaller demon’s hair.

After the little micro-tour of his apartment, Boombox led his friend back into the main living area, gesturing to the couch. “Here, sit, I’ll get you a drink of something. Is water okay?” Skateboard nodded, leaning back on his friend’s rather comfy couch, relaxing into it.

After a few seconds, Boombox brought in some water, handing a glass to Skate. He had taken his visor off. He leaned back into the couch, being mindful of his puffy tail before grabbing the remote.

“You wanna watch something?” He asked, looking over at Skateboard with a curious expression. “Sure, I can pick if you want.” The red Phighter took the remote from Boombox, turning on the TV and flicking through things until finding something simple, an old live of a Phight!. Neither of them were in this one. Red team was composed of mostly supports, with a Biograft and a Katana. The Blue team had mainly ranged phighters, Rocket, Shuriken, Scythe, Hyperlaser, and Sword.

“Do you often watch back on the Phights?” Boombox asked, turning his body to face Skateboard. His tail rested on his thigh, brushing against the chain on his belt. “Sometimes yeah, I gotta get the feel for my teammates, y’know?” Skateboard replied, turning his head to face his friend. He felt his cheeks heat up marginally. He couldn’t deny that his friend was pretty. No. He shouldn’t be thinking like that. They were friends. Nothing more.

“Hm…” Boombox hummed out softly, turning back to face the television. He shifted closer towards the red demon, shoulders brushing. The Phight! was actually rather eventful. It was a pretty close tie, both matched evenly for kills.

But nonetheless, after Boombox’s long day of falling on his face more times than he could count, exhaustion swept through him, and he found himself drifting off to sleep.

-

Boombox blinked open his eyes with a groan, nuzzling closer into what he believed was his pillow.

It was not.

It was Skateboard’s chest.

After realizing, Boombox instinctively pulled back, cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “Sorry-” He muttered, voice laced with sleep. Skateboard looked down at his now awake friend, blinking with surprise. “You’re good. You can stay if you want.” He explained, a faint hint of glowing red decorating his cheeks.

“A-Ah…Okay…” The green phighter nuzzled back into his friend’s chest, arms hesitantly wrapping around his waist for stability and comfort.

This interaction felt…different. Like there was something more intimate about it all.

Well, it obviously was,

but they did stuff like this all the time when they were younger. Boombox couldn’t even count on one hand the amount of times Coil fell asleep on his shoulder. Maybe it was because they were older. More mature. More sure about how…romance worked.

Boombox tried to push those thoughts out of his mind, breathing in Skateboard’s scent, relaxing against the taller demon.

“You’re warm.”

Boombox stated quietly after a moment of silence between the two. Skateboard looked down at him, leaning into his grasp. “Hmm…” The acknowledgement was brief, but it wasn’t the verbal response that made Boombox's heart flutter. It was the movement of Skateboard’s arm sliding over his shoulder, rubbing small circles on the green phighter’s back.

The two demons rested in silence, Boombox lost in his thoughts, and not hiding it at all, whereas Skateboard at least pretended to focus on the TV.

“How do you want sleeping arrangements to work?”

Boombox asked after a while, his puffy tail swishing against the cushions. His apartment only had the one room. And yeah, technically Skateboard could sleep on the couch. But it wasn’t the most comfortable thing in the world.

“Sleeping arrangements?” Skateboard pondered the question, his claws still rubbing comfortably against Boombox’s back. “I suppose, if it's not an issue, we could sleep together? We used to do it all the time when we were younger. And Coil was there.” Skateboard suggested, trying to sound calm about the situation, despite the flutter in his chest at the idea of sleeping so close to his best friend.

-

After around an hour of the two just…snuggling, neither of them really watching the Phights anymore, they decided they were both pretty exhausted. With a yawn, Skateboard reached down for the remote, careful not to disturb Boombox with his movements. He turned off the television, giving his friend’s back a few more firm pats before leaning down and whispering in his ear. “It’s late, we should be getting to bed. We both have interviews tomorrow.”

Boombox’s spine tinged at Skateboard’s voice but he reluctantly pulled away from the taller demon, stretching his arms out as he stood up from the couch. His tail extended fully behind him, the edges of the fur puffing up as he yawned. “Alright, I’m gonna change into more comfortable clothes, I’ll let you in when I’m ready.” Boombox said, heading towards the door that leads to his room.

It didn’t take long for him to change, slipping into a tank top and some loose sweatpants. He opened the door, beckoning Skateboard into his room. The other phighter’s clothes were more casual, so he didn't need to change.

The two demons stood awkwardly in Boombox’s room before the smaller one sat on the edge of his bed, tail twitching nervously. Skateboard sat down on the other side, awkwardly digging his claws into his pants. Boombox, after a long internal debate with himself, scooted back to the headboard, lying down, shimmying under the sheets. Skateboard followed suit, not wanting to be awkward.

They lay stiffly under the sheets, Skateboard’s cheeks glowing in the darkness. That was one downside to being a demon. When they blush, their cheeks glow.

Real discreet in a pitch black room.

Boombox slowly turned his body towards Skate’s, the same way he had done on the couch. “H-Hey uh…the awkwardness is suffocating me here. Surely there’s something we can like…do” The green phighter’s fluffy tail shifting under the bed sheets, causing a rustling noise.

“W-We could get closer I guess? Snuggle? Like how we used to do when we were kids?” Skateboard suggested turning his head towards Boombox.

“Yeah…Okay.”

The smaller demon agreed, shifting closer to his friend. After their rearrangement, the two phighter’s thighs were brushing against each other, Boombox leaning against Skate’s shoulder.

The two were quiet for a while, just lost in their own thoughts. Both no doubt about the same thing. Just how…romantic this was. Boombox tested the waters, leaning more on Skateboard, wrapping his arms around him. Skate’s breath hitched, cheeks glowing a little bit brighter in the darkness.

Before long, the taller demon returned the contact, one of his arms wrapping around Boombox’s back, rubbing the plane through the thin fabric of his tank.

“That feels good…”

Boombox muttered, leaning into the touches, his own cheeks glowing green. “I’m glad…” This whole night was…really awkward. It was nothing like what they used to do.

Even if it was the exact same.

-

Against basically all odds, the two ended up falling asleep, in each other’s arms it should be noted. With their feet tangled together, sunlight warming his face, Skateboard blinked his eyes open with a groan, noting a pressure next to him. He looked down, seeing Boombox, still asleep, chest rising and falling slowly.

Right.

They slept together.

And cuddled.

SFOTH, this was weird.

Skateboard smiled softly, fishing his phone out of his pocket and taking a picture of Boombox. He would be able to tease the younger demon about it later.

At the small movements, the green phighter stirred, blinking sleep from his eyes, tail stretching out behind him. “Mmmnn…” Boombox groaned, snuggling deeper into Skateboard’s chest, cheek flattening as it pressed against the plane of muscle. Skate felt himself blush, tail flicking against the sheets. “Oh…right… Mornin’ Skate…” Boombox greeted, his eyes finally opening to look up at his best friend, smiling sleepily. “Morning.”

The green phighter sighed out, squeezing Skateboard tighter, shifting so that more of his weight was pressed down onto his friend. “Ugh…I just wanna stay here all day.” He moaned out in exhaustion, racoon tail swishing over the bedsheets. “Hm…” Skateboard acknowledged, reaching down to place his hand on Boombox’s head, stroking his hair.

“We can’t, you know.” Boombox looked up, tilting his head to the side before he sighed, rolling his eyes. “Right…Valk’s dumb interviews.” The green phighter leaned into the head pats, frowning.

“You know what? Screw Valk. I don’t wanna have an interview. I wanna stay here in bed with you.” Skateboard rolled his eyes at Boombox’s claim. He knew the smaller demon didn’t mean it. He loved Valk, the guy was his idol! He was just…sleepy.

“Come on Boom. We need to go to them.” Skate urged, but made no move to pull away from his friend’s grasp. “Nooo….” Boombox groaned out, shifting his position to lie on top of Skateboard, chests flush with each other. The red demon felt his cheeks heat up, but didn’t say anything. “We’re not going anywhere…” Boombox sleepily explained, nuzzling his face against Skateboard's chest, wrapping his arms around his waist.

He shifted himself upwards, trying to be more directly on top of his friend, but before he could fix himself perfectly, he fell forward with a surprised hum, shutting his eyes instinctively. He felt a pressure on his lips and opened his eyes again, to be met with an…interesting sight. Skateboard under him, cheeks a deep glowing red.

That pressure he felt against his own lips?

Yeah, he just accidentally kissed his best friend.

Neither of them moved for a solid five seconds before Boombox scrambled back, his own cheeks glowing a lime green. “S-Sorry!” He stammered, tail fluffed up to at least twice its original size.

But before Boombox could fully back up, Skateboard’s hands were cupping his cheeks, pulling him back down, so that their breaths were mingling. The red demon frowned, eyes narrowing as he gauged Boombox’s reaction. The green phighter’s breath hitched, cheeks glowing even brighter, if that was even possible at this point.

Before Skateboard could pull back, thinking he overstepped, Boombox’s own lips were back, moving against his own. The smaller phighter reached up, pulling one of Skateboard’s hands off of his cheek, interwinning their fingers together. It was an instinct Boombox didn’t even know he had until it happened. Skateboard’s other hand loosened its grip on his cheek, gently caressing the soft flesh instead. Boombox let out a small moan, tilting his head to the right to press his lips more firmly against the other’s. He let his eyes drift close, his lips moving slowly against Skate’s.

Who, despite the initial surprise of the action, started kissing him back, leaning his head back as far as he could into the pillows. The green Inphernal’s lips were…surprisingly soft, and Skateboard couldn’t help but notice how right it felt to be kissing him. His claws gently grazed over the bottom of Boombox’s horns, a shiver running down the smaller phighter’s spine at the contact. “Mmph…” Boombox moaned, his eyes fluttering open once more, looking down at Skateboard’s glowing red cheeks.

Around twenty seconds had passed of them kissing each other. The two pulled away, albeit reluctantly, from each other, both looking dizzy. “I-I…” Skateboard started, not even knowing what to say after that. Neither of them knew they wanted to kiss each other until the moment presented itself.

“You…” Skate shook his head, trying to clear it. “We…kissed” He finally settled on. Boombox nodded slowly, looking equally as startled.

“Y-Yeah”

He agreed simply, his tail wagging despite himself. Skateboard allowed his hands to fall from his…friend’s(?) face, going back to his sides.

The two stayed silent before Boombox crawled off of Skate, getting up and sitting on the edge of the bed. “I liked it.” The green phighter whispered, his tail swishing slowly over the bedsheets, brushing against Skateboard’s leg with every flick. The red demon was quiet for a while, turning his body to face Boombox.

“I did too.”

Boombox looked back and their eyes met, both gazes shimmering with uncertainty. He frowned, biting the inside of his cheek as he debated internally with himself.

“Are we…dating?”

He asked, eyes scrunching up marginally. Skateboard didn’t know how to answer that question.

Were they?

They both liked kissing each other, they’ve been friends as long as they could remember, and they snuggle and have intimate moments often, well they used to.

“I-I…don’t know.” He finally answered, not breaking eye contact with Boombox.

“Do you have feelings for me…?”

Skateboard flinched at the question, tail flicking under the bed sheets.

Thinking about it now, he did.

He really did.

Skate thought back on all the times he’s wanted to snuggle up with Boombox, or hug him, all the times they’ve had serious chats, all the times they’ve laughed through the night.

“Yes. I do.” He managed, swallowing nervously.

“What about you..? Do you have feelings for me?”

Boombox nodded slowly, breaking eye contact with Skate to look down at the sheets instead of his eyes. “I think so.” The green phighter’s claws dug into his sweatpants, lightly tearing the fabric, but only marginally.

“Then…If the feelings are mutual,”

Skateboard started, pulling a hand out from under the sheets, placing it palm up on the mattress. “We should be dating.”

Boombox looked up at the red demon as he placed his hand down, surprise written on his features. He slowly slid one of his own hands into Skate’s, interwinning their fingers awkwardly.

“I’d like that…” He muttered, smiling down at Skateboard.
