Chapter Text
They had spent a nice evening with the team at Bobby and Athena’s house, sharing a nice home-cooked meal together. The gathering had been Bobby’s idea, partly to celebrate his and Athena’s second wedding anniversary, but that had mostly been an excuse to get the whole team together outside of work.
As the evening went on, the temperature grew colder, and eventually they all moved inside to gather around the dinner table. Chim was sitting between the two of them, goofing off with Buck, who was sitting across from him, and Bobby was fairly certain he didn’t want to know what they were talking about. Not that he had any idea anyway, since his attention was entirely focused on his wife on the other side of his friend.
Athena was wearing a burgundy sleeveless top and black jeans, which was appropriate for an evening like this, yet it was still enough to make his mind short circuit. The sight of her bare arms and the way the light hit just right on her shoulders had him thinking very inappropriate thoughts.
At one point, Chim got up and took his chair so he could sit by Hen, who was on the opposite side of Athena, leaving an empty space between Bobby and his wife. It gave him an even better view of Athena’s shoulder and suddenly his fingers itched to touch her.
So when he noticed her conversation with Hen had ended and he caught her glancing at him, he did the only thing that made sense at that moment. He reached for her chair, wrapping his fingers around the underside of her seat, and pulled her towards him in one smooth move.
It clearly caught Athena off guard, judging by the surprised shriek that escaped her. Her eyes lit up with amusement as she looked at him, shaking her head fondly before leaning over and pressing a kiss to his lips.
“You know.” She murmured quietly enough for only him to hear. “Most people just ask their wives to sit closer.”
Bobby smiled, eyes softening as he looked at her. “Where is the fun in that?”
“You crazy man.” Athena sighed affectionately, clearly enjoying how close she was to him now their chairs were flush together. She brushed a strand of hair from his forehead and smiled at him, ignoring the whistles coming from the rest of the team.
“That was damn smooth, Cap!” Buck laughed and turned around to Chim. “Let me try that with you, Chim!” Without waiting for a response, he reached out to the chair where Chimney was sitting.
“Get your fingers away from me, Buckley.” Chim warned in a mock-serious tone. “Or I will tell Maddie.” With a satisfied smile on his face Chim saw his younger coworker immediately retreat back to his own seat. Some things would never change, even when you were in your early thirties.
Bobby barely noticed any of the commotion happening on the other side of the table.
All he could focus on was Athena leaning into his side, close enough that every now and then her thigh brushed against his beneath the table.
Even after everything life had thrown at them, he still had moments like this where he looked at her and wondered how he had gotten so lucky.
How they had gotten so lucky.
