Work Text:
Nile felt as if she were dying in the humid heat, and the mosquitoes only worsened her mood. Nile's only thought was that once this mission ended, she would go shopping in Milan and enjoy some cool drinks.
Booker: "Bathroom. Look out for any messages from the others."
Nile nodded, and Booker left the room. Nile walked over to the small counter where some tinned food was standing. As Nile looked at the selection of canned foods, she couldn't wait to enjoy fresh pasta in Milan. After selecting her meal, Nile sat down to eat the cold beef while contemplating what else she might want to eat once she left Laos.
Booker: "And you thought I were crazy for bringing ketchup on this mission."
Nile: "Okay, I understand why you did it."
Booker cracked his neck before sitting down with his laptop.
Booker: "Were there any messages?"
Nile: "Only one from Joe and Nicky, and it didn't make any sense if you ask me."
Booker: "Tell me what it was."
Nile: "They said the rooster will crow at dusk tonight. And Andy already knew it."
Never before had Nile seen Booker move as fast as he did right now.
Booker: "Grab your go bag. We are leaving as soon as we have burned down this place to the ground."
When Nile didn't move, Booker pulled her to her feet.
Booker: "Move, Nile. It is only a matter of time before we will have unwanted company."
Nile did what Booker told her to do. They quickly left the small safe house, but before Booker could destroy it, a group of men in jeeps arrived and started shooting at them.
Booker: "And they brought a bazooka. Nile, get the car going."
As Nile reached the car, Booker threw the Molotov cocktail at the safe house, igniting it seconds afterward. When Booker was sure the safe house was burning, he joined Nile in the car.
Booker: "Please don't drive as Nicky does."
Nile: "I cannot make any promises because he was the one who taught me how to drive."
Booker: "Oh, I know. Why was it again that he ended up as your driving instructor?"
Nile: "Something about that he was the one who had had a driver's licence for the longest time."
Booker: "As if. I beat him by at least five years because he thought it was a fashion trend that would blow over in no time."
Booker looked over his shoulder.
Booker: "They are getting ready to fire the bazooka."
When Nile made a move with the car, Booker was sure it was Nicky who had taught her to do it.
Booker: "When this is over, I will show you how we drive in France."
Nile laughed.
Nile: "I will think about your offer."
Booker: "What do you mean?"
Nile: "Oh, it is just something Nicky told me. And Joe, too."
Booker: "I know what they told you, and they are so wrong."
Booker took his laptop and tried his best to work while Nile drove.
Nile: "Where are the horses, again?"
Booker: "Oh, they are nearby. No need to lead the others to them. Damn it."
When Nile heard Booker swear in French, she knew it was about time to get rid of their pursuers.
Booker: "Whatever you are thinking about doing, do it."
Nile nodded, and thanks to the distance she had gotten between her and their pursuers, she was able to drive down a hill. It was a bumpy ride, and Booker knew it didn't help his sore back.
Nile: "Be prepared because we will hit the water any second."
Booker closed his laptop and held onto it as they hit the water. After getting out of the car, Booker threw another Molotov cocktail at the car before he hid in the bushes with Nile. For the next few hours, Nile and Booker didn't move from the bushes before they were sure they were alone.
Booker: "The horses are this way."
Nile followed Booker.
Nile: "Booker, may I ask you something?"
Booker nodded.
Nile: "I get that thanks to Joe and Nicky's message, we were able to leave in time or as close as possible. But what in the message gave it away?"
Booker: "They once told me they spent a few years in Denmark during the Middle Ages. And during that time, they learned from farmers that whenever others told a farmer that a rooster had crowed, it meant there had been a fire on a farm. Over the years, they used the word 'rooster' as a password to signal us to burn the safe house and escape."
Nile: "That does make sense."
Booker: "Over time, you will learn all the passwords we have, and you might even add to them."
Nile: "I will come up with something that will irritate you. Maybe if I say 'Booker fell into the water', it could mean there is..."
Booker turned around and looked at Nile.
Booker: "Please don't use that password. I will never hear the end of it from the rest because they want to hear that story."
Nile smiled the smile that told Booker she was up to something.
Booker: "If I pay for a spa day, will you please stop smiling like that?"
Nile: "Thank you. It was just what I needed."
They resumed walking until they reached the horses.
Booker: "We will get out of here as soon as I have sent the rest a message, so do you mind getting the horses ready?"
Nile nodded, and shortly after, they set out to meet the others to complete their mission.
