Work Text:
“Tsukkiii!”
Yamaguchi rushed into the cafe, with his hands clutching his book bag and pencil case. He sat down on the table Tsukishima was sitting at and slammed his books onto it, nearly toppling it over.
“Ah, sorry I’m late…” the green haired boy said, scratching the back of his head.
“It’s okay,” Tsukishima replied. “Just order your drink and we can start getting into the source material.” Yamaguchi nodded at his statement and walked to the counter to order his usual latte. After that, he sat down and got to their study session.
It went on for a bit: Tsukishima helped Yamaguchi with the recent lessons in English, along with a few random conversation topics circulating between the two of them.
“Ah, I have to do this homework... give me a moment.” Yamaguchi said, who now started reading the questions on the worksheet given to them by their teacher today. As Tsukishima gazed at his friend’s face like usual, he noticed something drooping from above Yamaguchi’s head. He looked up to see his random ahoge drooping down as he got more and more confused at the questions.
He stared at it for a moment, watching it begin to blend in with the rest of his hair as it flopped before stiffening up when Yamaguchi recalled something he studied for an answer, writing it down with confidence.
‘….???’ Tsukishima thought to himself. He never noticed his friend’s weird hair could do this. He knew he had it—Sugawara had an ahoge too—but he couldn't recall ever seeing it do… that.
He watched it change position, syncing with Yamaguchi’s expression. It continued to flop and raise as he ran through the questions. Eventually, the other boy wrapped up and passed the paper to Tsukishima.
“Ah, um... can you check this? I just wanna make sure everything’s good, is all.” Yamaguchi asked, his ahoge resting in a low position.
“Okay.” He looked at it for a few minutes, looking over the other’s writings and explanations and passed it back to him.
“All good.” He watched as Yamaguchi’s face lit up, his ahoge raising up as he thanked Tsukishima for the help. They continued on their session, ordering another set of coffee midway through. Soon, the sun began to set, and they stepped out of the cafe with their takeout cups and book bags.
“Thanks again for the help, Tsukii!” Yamaguchi smiled before they went their separate ways to head home. Tsukishima couldn’t get his mind off of the hair situation, thinking about how it moved around. Again, he's sure Yamaguchi’s had that ahoge since they met, or for even probably longer. But that? It didn’t make sense that he didn’t notice.
He should ask him.
Tsukishima turned around as Yamaguchi walked away. He brisk walked over to him before calling out, “Tadashi.”
Yamaguchi freezed up in surprise for a bit before turning around in confusion. “Yeah? What’s up?”
“Your ahoge.” Tsukishima pointed up at the other's hair.
“Something wrong with it?” Yamaguchi felt for it in response.
“No.”
“Huh?” He lowered his hand in response.
“It moves.”
“Ehhh??!” Yamaguchi’s hair spiked up at that.
“It’s doing it now.” Tsukishima pointed out before it went back to its usual position.
“N-no!” Yamaguchi retorted. Tsukishima tried to correct him before he broke out in laughter. “I mean- you only noticed now?!” He walked up to Tsukishima while giggling and placed his hand on his shoulder. “I thought you just didn’t say anything about it!”
Tsukishima froze for a minute, and he swore he could feel his own hair do the same as Yamaguchi’s. “I just never bothered to pay attention to your head,” he answered as they stood there infront of the empty cafe.
“With how much you look at my face?” Yamaguchi looked up at him with a cheeky smile. Tsukishima blushed and looked away at that. So he DID notice….
Yamaguchi put his hand down and took a step back so that they were at an ample distance. “It’s actually only been like this since we met," he said, giggling. “I think you did something to me.” Tsukishima was still looking away in embarrassment.
“…Well,” Yamaguchi continued, “I think you did something else to me too.” Tsukishima looked at Yamaguchi in surprise. He was looking away himself, his ahoge woven into a tiny heart. Tsukishima couldn’t keep his gaze either because of that; his cheeks were blushing just as much as before. They stood together like that for a moment before Yamaguchi broke the ice.
“Ah! Well, see you tomorrow, Tsukki!” He greeted awkwardly before they shimmied away from each other to go back home for real. Not without a hug, though.
As Tsukishima was making his way home, he couldn’t get his mind away from what Yamaguchi said…
‘I think you did something else to me too.’
…
Tsukishima smiled at that while he opened the door to his house.
He promised to himself he’ll tell Yamaguchi that he did the same to him.
