Justice

Summary:

Apollo hears Klavier singing one day and finds that he likes it.

Notes:

Written for "Music"! This is a little late, but I'm also dedicating this to a friend for her bday ^^

Work Text:

The door was ajar. Apollo recognized the voice drifting through the crack as Klavier’s, but it was so...soft. A complete opposite from how he’d sounded in the Gavinners’ concerts. The gentle strumming of the guitar was soothing too, lulling him into a sense of peace just outside the door; he didn’t want to barge in and interrupt the music.

“Apollo?” He jumped as Ema called out from behind him. The strumming and the singing stopped. “What are you doing here?”

“Oh, um, I needed, uh,” Apollo stammered, and Ema narrowed her eyes at him, a tiny smile twitching at her lips.

“Listening to the fop’s music? Admittedly, it's much better than the senseless rock he plays sometimes.”

“I’m hurt, Fraulein Detective.” Apollo almost jumped again as he heard Klavier’s voice behind him. He prayed that his eavesdropping hadn’t been detected...

“Your music hurts my ears,” Ema said, rolling her eyes. With a smirk at Apollo, she turned and went on her way.

“So, Forehead. What were you doing just outside my door?” Klavier asked. Apollo hated the smug look on his face.

“I need to ask you about evidence,” Apollo said flatly. He hoped his face wasn't flushed red. “The pens might have been planted at the crime scene.”

“Ah.” The look disappeared, replaced by a frown. “What makes you say that?”

“The witness swears that she didn't see the pens there when she was at the scene right after the murder. I don't think she's lying or mistaken.”

“I’ll look into it,” Klavier said, lips still pulled down.

As Apollo turned, Klavier laughed lightly. “Leaving already? Don't you want to listen to some more?”

Apollo shot him a scowl as he all but stomped away.

”Apollo! Prosecutor Gavin came out with a new song!”

Apollo didn't look up from his paperwork. “And?”

“It’s called “Justice,”” Trucy told him with a grin in her voice.

Apollo froze. What?

“I know! It's curious, right?”

Apollo shook his head. “He used to write law-related songs for the Gavinners. This is just another one of those.”

“I dunno,” Trucy said, “I think you’d like it. Why don't you look it up?” With that suggestion, she danced off to the couch, humming a tune he didn’t recognize.

“Justice,” huh? He supposed there was no harm in checking it out...when he was home, of course. He didn’t think Mr.Wright would let ever let it go if he played one of Klavier’s songs in the office.

Apollo sighed and tapped his pen on the paper, trying to get back to work.

He failed. Giving a furtive glance to his surroundings, he pulled out his phone and searched for the lyrics to the song. He was just curious, that was all. Nothing else was going on.

“Red passion, searching for the truth…”

“Keep those eyes on me, pick out the lies on my lips…”

...Apollo felt like slamming his head on his desk.

“I listened to your new song.”

Klavier straightened from examining the body. “Did you like it?”

There was a grin firmly in place on his lips, but Apollo’s bracelet twitched nevertheless. Was it the twisting of the ring on his finger? Why would he be nervous? “It wasn’t bad.” It was really good, actually. Klavier’s voice had been even nicer than when he’d heard it through a crack in a door. Apollo smiled, face heating up a little. “The lyrics were kind of cheesy, though.”

Klavier chuckled. “As long as the message got through.” He met Apollo’s eyes. “Care to join me for dinner after this case ends?”

Apollo took a deep breath, heart hammering in his chest. “Yeah. That sounds nice.”
