Work Text:
Susie sits next to Kris by the lake, as the wind gently howls. Occasionally, a leaf is blown off its tree and falls into the dark water below, forming a ripple.
There's no reason to talk, so they don't.
Susie used to hate silence, and the feeling of impending doom that surrounded her when the room got too quiet.
Her gaze is fixed on one of the stray leaves.
It's not like that with Kris. Their silence doesn't mean danger. Here, Susie doesn't have to shout to protect herself. She doesn't have to be violent. She can just... be.
Susie then casts her eyes to the night sky, and thinks, I'm so lucky to have them.
It was never meant to be this way. I don't think I was ever meant to have friends.
That's what everyone thought, too. That I was gonna be alone forever, or that no one would ever really wanna get close to me.
An image of a piano flashes into Susie's mind. She pictures Kris walking up to it, sitting down, and playing a beautiful melody, their fingers brushing effortlessly against the keys. Something she was never allowed to do.
But then, one day, we fell into a dark supply closet — darker than I could've ever imagined.
And you were there with me, the whole time, even if I was a total ass to you at first. I've always sucked at first impressions like that.
Isn't it kinda crazy that we just stumbled into all this? That it was the two of us? It scares me sometimes, honestly — being a part of something this important.
From across the lake, Susie swears she can hear a distant song. She glances at Kris, and wonders if they can hear it too.
But, somehow, sitting here, next to you... I feel like we can deal with all of this, y'know? Like I have hope, or something. That's what the prophecy says about me, anyway. I'm the girl with hope crossed on her heart.
We're a team. Right, Kris?
The leaf she had been watching floats closer to her, as if listening to her thoughts.
Susie snickers to herself. She probably should be saying all of this out loud.
That'll come eventually. She's not a total dork.
