There's always you

Summary:

"I thought you didn't have heats?"

"I thought so, too." Will spoke. "I didn't realize that was what it was until…"

"Until?" Mike encouraged him on.

"Until I got here." He continued, turning to Mike to meet his eyes. "And I smelled your scent."

Or: Due to past trauma, Will doesn't think his inner will ever feel safe enough to fully present. Not expecting his heat to crash into him full force, he goes to see his best friend as he so often does, accidentally triggering his rut, and bringing about an unplanned pregnancy.

Chapter 1

Notes:

HI! Back for more. I have no clue how many chapters this will be but I'm shooting for 6 (ish).

Pls read the tags, some aspects may be more sensitive.

Also: I want to make a note that everything in this fic is consensual even though part of Will's inner conflict is around feeling like he manipulated Mike with his heat pheromones. That is just a fear and is not accurate (consent wise) whatsoever. I did tag dub-con because of the A/B/O factors just in case.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

Will stepped out of his car. Yes, his car. Purchased with his own, hard-earned cash. Summer afternoons mowing lawns, painting fences, and walking dogs, paired with semesters of work study hours spent in the library, had added up, eventually allowing him the privilege to purchase his very own car. It was small and a little dingy, but it worked, and it was his, and he was proud of it.

He supposed he should be thankful. Lonnie was back in his life, having agreed to fund Will's community college education, which, granted, wasn't too expensive. Will had been wary at first, and if he was completely honest, still was, but he had ultimately accepted the offer so as not to burn any bridges.

And who knows? Perhaps Lonnie had turned a new leaf. Will wasn't agreeing to live with him, just accept money for schooling, and occasionally be guilt-tripped into a father/son dinner as he now was.

Lonnie had changed jobs over the years but currently worked as a truck driver. Will found it to be a positive thing because, though Lonnie lived two towns over from him, the extra distance when he was working made him feel more comfortable. It meant that Will barely saw him more than two or three times a year.

The deal was worth it.

Plus, without having to worry about his tuition, he had been able to save all his money for the glorious tin box on four wheels he'd just arrived in. No more sharing a car with his mom or coordinating rides.

He stood, yawning and stretching his legs after the thirty-minute drive. He'd been more tired recently, likely due to his change in schedule. Summer was nearing fall, and his junior year had begun not three weeks ago.

"There he is," Lonnie called from where he leaned against the door frame, a cigarette between his fingers.

They didn't hug, but Will stood awkwardly when Lonnie clapped a hand on his back in a greeting. As Will followed him inside, his alpha scent — metallic, mechanical, and something eerily similar to beer— filled his nose. Despite the sound of it, it wasn't necessarily bad, but it did nothing to make him feel safe either.

"Mike didn't force his way here today?"

Will shook his head. "He's working."

Lonnie always found a way to give Mike a hard time, acting like he was teasing, but something about the tone felt deeper to Will. It wasn't like Mike's relationship with Hopper. Those two disagreed on things at times and had partially playful banter that was built on history together and, deep down, a love for one another. Their relationship was honest, whereas Lonnie's relationship with Mike felt more like a farce.

Mike almost always accompanied Will on these visits, and though Will told him he didn't have to, he was thankful that Mike usually ignored him and came anyway. Despite having grown, he still didn't love being near Lonnie, especially alone.

Tuition. That was what he was doing it for, he had to remind himself. He could brave the intrusive questions and unwelcome comments now and then.

"Well, good. Maybe he'll finally alpha up. And I get you to myself for once." Lonnie let out a laugh as he walked towards the kitchen. He pointed to a stool. "Here, sit."

Will sat.

"Any alphas wanting to court you?"

Let the interview begin.

"No, I don't think so."

Lonnie pursed his lips, scoffing softly. "Yeah, well, you'd know."

Will knew Lonnie's disappointment in him ran deep. After Jonathan had presented as a beta, Will was Lonnie's only hope for an alpha son like himself.

When Will began to show signs of his omega status from a young age, he had pretended the fact away for a while. Once he'd accepted it, Lonnie had focused his efforts instead on Will's performance as the perfect omega. When he wasn't expressing his disappointment in Will's designation, he was instead telling him how an omega should act, what he should wear, how he should sit, and how he should look.

His disappointment had reached exponential levels when he heard that Will didn't even present. At least, not fully. Thankfully, Will didn't have to experience the disappointment in person since he hadn't been around in a while, still scarce in light of his and Joyce's divorce.

Will had been to the doctor time and time again regarding his unique case, finding that it was likely due to past trauma, which led to his omega never having felt safe enough to go into a full heat. He'd presented in other ways; his scent had gradually deepened, developing into the calming scent of lotus and honey. He felt safest in a nest, and his omega instincts were also perfectly intact. He just hadn't experienced a full heat, even at his mature age of twenty.

That is, until just a couple of months prior.

It was a particularly hot day, and Will had just arrived home after mowing a couple of lawns. He'd showered, feeling the cool water on his sweaty skin, then prepared to spend the night at Mike's.

Mike's parents had purchased a duplex a couple of years prior, Ted droning on about the 'passive income' and what a wonderful investment opportunity it was. They rented it out and, at the beginning of the previous semester, the purchase had become beneficial for Mike and, in turn, Will.

Mike had moved in at the beginning of last semester, paying his parents a smaller fee in rent than he would've paid elsewhere. It was perfect for him since he'd been wanting more privacy, but attended the same community college as Will and couldn't work full-time yet. The privacy had been great for Mike, allowing him to really come into himself, learning to cook and feeling a certain confidence over his new responsibilities.

Will was over often, spending the night sometimes three or four times a week. It was just so convenient. The duplex was closer to the college than the Hopper-Byers' home was, and he was just going to see Mike again the next day anyway.

He didn't have much to do to prep. He brought clothes for the following day, shorts, a T-shirt, and boxers, but he stayed at Mike's so often that he had his own toothbrush and kept some pajamas and jackets there as well.

He was lucky, really. His lack of a heat had allowed him to be closer with the alpha than an omega normally could be.

Generally, it might have been frowned upon for him to spend so much time, especially nights with an alpha—any alpha—because of the possibility of a heat or rut.

His complete lack of heat, while possibly lowering his self-esteem and definitely serving as a wedge between himself and his father, had proved to be something he could be thankful for in times such as these. He loved spending time with Mike, spending the night there, even if he did sleep on the couch.

In Mike's defense, he would offer the bed, but Will always declined. He wasn't going to force himself into Mike's den and take his bed, especially with how often he ended up staying. He wouldn't do that, even though he could imagine how intense the comfort would be, wrapped up in Mike's heavily scented sheets, suffocating on the woodsy scent of forest and rain.

That was another reason to decline; if given the opportunity, he wasn't sure he could leave.

He'd made his way to his 'new' car, dropping his bag in the passenger seat, stomach aching slightly as he plopped himself into the driver's seat. He paused, rubbing a hand over the area, but dismissed the slight pain soon enough. He had likely overdone it with the mowing. It was nothing some dinner and lots of water at Mike's couldn't fix.

Mike was planning to cook spaghetti. The effort he had put into learning to cook, taking care of himself, his home, and even taking care of Will a few nights a week, had brought the omega a new sense of comfort he had quickly grown accustomed to. He settled into it, happy to be in the alpha's presence, an observer who was blessed with the sight of watching someone so dear to him grow into himself.

The air conditioner was on full blast on the eight-minute drive to Mike's, skin still warm from the sun that had droned down on him earlier.

When he finally made it to Mike's, the ache in his stomach had become a constant pain, tightening and pulling his muscles tensely, making the idea of wrapping himself into a fetal position more than appealing. He decided that once he was inside, he would do just that, claiming his spot on the couch and pulling his body into a tight ball until the pain lapsed.

The summer heat had truly gotten to him, but a thirty-minute nap would fix him.

Only, the moment he let himself into Mike's home, stepping across the threshold, he could no longer attribute his symptoms to the heat of the day.

The scent that filled his lungs was so overwhelmingly delightful. Mike's scent always was, but not like this. It held a deliciousness that magnified tenfold, his stomach clenching and his head lolling slightly as the door fell shut behind him. Mike's scent filled the space around him, dancing through the air in such a way that made Will feel it even on his skin.

In response to his next intake of breath, his shorts suddenly grew damp. He couldn't bring himself to care as he inhaled again deeply and greedily, despite the additional dampness that joined what was already there.

He needed the scent.

He needed its owner.

His knees felt weak as they tried with the last of their strength to support the rest of him.

"Will?"

Will's eyes found the source of his desire, the raven-haired alpha that stood, just two long strides away from him, nose twitching and pupils dilating. His presence made the scent enveloping Will even stronger, expanding and deepening in richness.

Will felt his own gland spike out pheromones in response, pushing out his lotus scent with an extra warm-honey sweetness, sickeningly so.

He barely registered the growl that escaped the alpha, eyes fluttering at the noise, his own whimper pulled from his chest unintentionally in response.

There were no words.

Vaguely, he knew what was happening. He realized he was going into heat.

Well, he was in heat.

And with the way Mike's eyes had blown wide, the deep growls and hums that were echoing from his chest as he moved forward, eyes, not full of questions but instead, full of desire and intention— Will had triggered Mike's rut.

If logic had been a factor, he would have registered how bad this was, how horrid the combination was, and how this could completely obliterate their friendship.

Unfortunately, logic was not a factor for an omega in heat.

On a more conscious level, the only thought he could truly grasp was that he needed Mike—his alpha—desperately.

Yes, his alpha.

Because that was what Mike was to him. His inner hummed at the thought.

Mike had matured, leaning into his alpha instincts as he took care of his own place, took care of Will more often than not. Always cooking dinner, bringing him coffee when they were on campus, continuously offering his bed even though Will always refused, sharing his own clothes, and even doing Will's laundry when he'd forget things.

His alpha did those things for him.

His pheromones spiked again, based entirely on instinct, spreading his scent and painting the room—painting Mike with his need, need that only an alpha could fulfill, that only Mike could fulfill.

Then Mike was there, holding onto him in no time, which was good, because Will wasn't sure how much more life his legs had to give. His eyes were dark as they raked over Will, hands following where his eyes trailed. They were darker, still, when they traveled downwards, nose twitching again, as if to clue the alpha in on something. His hand came into contact with the damp patch between Will's legs, another growl rumbling through his chest when he caught the sweet honeydew scent Will was pumping out.

Will melted into him, acting in accordance with his inner, surrendering himself completely to the instincts clawing their way to the surface. His cheek fell to Mike's collarbone, nose poking against his gland where he inhaled once more, releasing more slick, he was sure Mike could feel where his hand still wandered, pressing against him.

His stomach contracted once more, the ache there growing more and more intense with need. His string of whines, pleas, and whimpers didn't go unnoticed, but were greeted with Mike's own growls of need and reassurance as his own instincts of calming and pleasing the omega came to life. Will clung to him, hands, legs, face, all digging into any place they could find purchase on the alpha, Mike letting him.

That's how it happened.

Omega and alpha, consumed by the moment and driven by an all-consuming need to submit to their instincts.

Somehow, Mike maneuvered them to his bedroom, and Will finally allowed himself within the alpha's den without his usual thought of respecting his space. Instead, he let out a soft keen when he realized where Mike had taken him.

He grasped more tightly, more aggressively at Mike, desperation undeniable as he pushed and pulled at Mike's clothes, his hands itching to feel his warm skin against his own.

Mike complied.

When Will begged, 'knot, Mike, knot,' the words tumbling from his tongue without thought, he complied then, too. Time and time again, until the energy was satisfied between them, draining entirely until the two lay spent beside one another, all notes of heat and rut vanishing with nothing but the lingering scent that still tainted the den.

Will would have looked back on the experience fondly, had he not seen the look on Mike's face when the cycle passed, and they finally regained clarity.

Regret.

Will could see it as clear as day.

Mike had regretted sharing Will's heat and allowing him in his den.

Will could see it in his expression, in the way his brows tilted together ever so slightly and his lips rested in a flat line across his face.

He pulled away then, moving into a sitting position so he could regain his surroundings. His body felt heavy and his mind groggy, the scent in the air a constant reminder of what had taken place.

Mike regretted it.

Did Will?

Only Will couldn't seem to form any thoughts past that, his mind taken up with the task of controlling his now sour scent that was quickly growing with distress. He tried to pull it back and keep it contained, but it was difficult when his body was so heavy, and his heart felt so strained.

He stood, finding his shirt and slipping it on.

"What are you doing?" Mike's voice rasped from the bed where he propped himself against the headboard, eyes following Will.

Will glanced in the direction of the voice, regretting the choice when he was met with the alpha's frown that still hadn't relaxed. His distress surged again.

"Just— gonna go." He found his shorts, but they were sticky in some places and crusty in others.

"Shouldn't we talk?"

He didn't want to look at the alpha again, had even taken to breathing through his mouth to prevent inhaling the likely bitter notes in Mike's usually comforting scent.

"I'm sorry, Mike." He dropped the shorts in Mike's laundry basket, reaching for a clean pair of Mike's instead. "I shouldn't have come here."

"I thought you didn't have heats?"

"I thought so, too." Will pulled the shorts up, not concerning himself with underwear. Vaguely, he remembered that he'd brought a change of clothes for himself, though the location escaped him. "I didn't realize that was what it was until…"

"Until?"

Will turned to him then, meeting his eyes. The soft frown was still there, showcasing his confusion, his desire to understand, and the remnants of his regret drifting below the surface.

Of course Mike regretted it. As much as Will's inner had convinced him, Mike was not Will's alpha. As kind as he was to him, as much as the way he treated Will resembled courting, it wasn't. He wasn't his mate. There was no bond, no bite mark on his neck.

Mike was his friend.

His best friend.

But not his.

He still stared at him expectantly.

"Until I got here." He continued. Mike waited, like he knew there was more. "And I smelled your scent."

"My scent?"

Will looked away again, heart skipping a beat at the implication of his words. He'd hidden his feelings so well, until now, because he had a reason for the dearness with which he regarded Mike. He'd always felt strongly towards him, his feelings for the alpha undeniable for too many years to count.

Would Mike's scent have affected him so much if it had belonged to another alpha? Would his pheromones have been so intoxicating to Mike, had Will not been so desperate for him specifically?

"You're, um, alpha scent." His fingers fiddled with the drawstrings on Mike's shorts. "I've never been in heat before. I don't know if I was fully until…until I smelled it." He swallowed, eyes finding Mike's again. "I'm sorry. I wouldn't have come if I realized."

"No, Will." Mike drew himself to the edge of the bed and stood just before Will, close enough to touch, though his arms stayed at his sides. "It's not your fault. I just— I wish I knew. I would've…"

He paused. The frown was still there, pulling at Will's guilt.

"What?" His voice was soft, scared, like he was bracing himself, waiting for Mike to say something that would keep him up at night, haunting him and their friendship for nights to come.

"I don't know. Something. Helped you, somehow." He trailed off, his frown mirroring itself on Will's face.

"You did." His voice was quiet.

Mike's cheeks had a soft pink tint where they were usually pale. "I know, but—"

Not in that way. Mike didn't want to help him in that way. Will knew that, and yet it was still too hard to hear.

Then he was turning to leave again, inching towards the door, until Mike stopped him, insisting that he cook for him, that Will was too tired to leave without eating.

Will's stomach rolling at the idea was enough for him to concede and follow Mike to the kitchen. They didn't look at each other much, but when they did, Will noticed Mike's eyes lingering on his neck.

After, he found his bag. He'd dropped it at the door, physical evidence of the effect Mike's scent had on him. Will snatched it up, as though the action of removing the evidence could erase the fact of the matter as well.

It couldn't.

He avoided Mike for a few days. It was easy to prevent once he saw himself in the mirror, the marks. No broken skin, but marks all the same; bites and bruises. No one could see it. He locked himself in his room, claiming his heat had come until the marks had faded enough that he could hide them. He stayed away from Mike a few days after that as well, but he had to see him again eventually, and the longer he waited, the weirder it would be.

And just as he suspected, when he saw him, it was weird.

The party had a routine. Friday night movie nights at Mike's house. Will decided to face his fear head-on and showed up early. Any other day, it would've felt normal, expected even. That day, it felt too intentional, too weird.

Everything was weird.

When he arrived, he stood outside the door that was suddenly so daunting. Should he knock? He'd never knocked before, but all of a sudden, the idea of barging in without warning felt wrong.

Was he being weird? What would a normal person do? What would he do if it were a normal day?

It was dumb; the key to the door on his keychain was reason enough.

He let himself in, slipping off his shoes and making his way to the kitchen, where Mike was already at work.

"Hey." Will chewed his lip.

"Oh, hey. 'Heard you come in." Mike smiled, and Will fought the urge to frown. He took a breath, hoping Mike's scent would do a better job of cluing him in to his emotions, but no. His scent wasn't too strong either way. It was mostly neutral, with relaxed undercurrents. The scent of someone who was enjoying the last weeks of summer before school started again, someone enjoying their Friday afternoon, trying out a new recipe for their friends that were due to arrive soon.

Not the scent of someone wracked with guilt and regret.

"What are you making?" Will filled the silence.

"Baked chicken." Mike smiled again.

It was too controlled, too intentional. Mike had planned it, and despite the confusion it invoked in Will, he was thankful for it.

If Mike was going to act as if nothing had happened, Will would gratefully do the same. If they didn't talk about it, they could pretend it wasn't real, just a fever dream for both of them and a fantasy for Will.

And so their agreement was formed.

There were times when he caught Mike staring during a movie, and he just knew what he was thinking about.

There were times he found his own thoughts drifting to the time they shared, eyes lingering on Mike until he noticed, and he had to look away, sure that Mike knew where his mind went.

That wasn't a part of their unspoken agreement. They were allowed to think about it, they just weren't supposed to get caught.

They got better at it—Will and Mike both—staring just long enough to get lost in their thoughts, knowing when to turn away to keep the normalcy between them.

But he couldn't tell Lonnie that.

That the closest to courting he'd come to was his best friend, his friend who had no intention behind the actions. He couldn't tell Lonnie about the other alphas either, even when there were a couple from time to time. Why get his hopes up just to disappoint him again? He would never accept a courtship from any of them, not when his inner yearned for another alpha.

"It's probably because of your scent. It's so…" Lonnie frowned, sniffing the air between them. "Muted. Still haven't had a heat?"

Will shook his head. "No." He lied. His wolf was always alert around Lonnie, and though he couldn't decide why he lied, the idea of stating the truth, out loud to Lonnie, made his inner shrink within him.

"Well. That doesn't help." He glanced Will up and down, searching for more to criticize. At least, that was how it felt. "You're already too big for an omega, being a boy and all." His eyes caught on his waist. "And are you gaining weight? Better slow down on the sweets." He laughed as if it were a joke, though Will knew it wasn't. "It's already going to be hard enough to find an alpha that wants an omega with no heat."

Lonnie's eyes fell back on Will's face, eyes squinting. "You haven't been practicing, have you?"

Will looked away, his wolf retreating at the disappointment to come.

Lonnie had given him an assignment: to practice putting out his sweet scent, in the hopes of attracting an alpha.

Will didn't want to do that. He didn't want to manipulate someone into wanting him.

And now it was deeper than that, because the thought of it just made him think of that night, when his body, his wolf, reacted to Mike's scent, his own sweet scent of honey flowing from his glands instinctively to attract him.

His face.

Then he just saw Mike's face.

The regret.

He hadn't meant to mute his scent, but he hadn't been practicing either, nor would he. He wouldn't be the type of omega to manipulate an alpha to be his mate. At least, not again. Not intentionally.

"No."

Lonnie shook his head. "I don't know what to do with you, Will. Without a heat, and without even an attractive scent, what alpha will want you?"

The words made Will bristle. He could handle most of Lonnie's backhanded remarks and his less-than-constructive criticism, but this was what he struggled with.

Why was finding an alpha everyone's goal for him? Didn't he have value outside of being what an alpha wants? And why should he change himself—his body, his scent, his appearance—for what an alpha might want? What if there were one who would want him, just the way he is, and he missed the opportunity by trying to be someone else?

Wouldn't he rather be alone than be with someone he had to change himself for?

It wasn't that he wanted to be alone, but he did not want to put effort into changing himself for that reason specifically. He was happy to grow, to change, and to morph into the person he was meant to be, but not to attract someone.

He would be satisfied as long as he liked himself. Why wasn't everyone else satisfied with that?

He tried not to let himself dwell on it, taking the comments in stride, taking the tuition money, and going on about his life, but it was still hard, especially when his insecurities were touched upon. Because, in some things, Lonnie was right. Will was too big to be an omega. He didn't fit into the dainty, delicate, damsel stereotype as so many omegas did.

He was shorter than Mike, at least, but his arms were toned, his legs were thicker than his, and though his stomach was flat, he'd noticed he had gone up a notch on his belt.

It was easy being with Mike. Mike didn't say those things to him or expect him to change himself. Mike probably didn't notice which notch on his belt he was using.

"Well, I'm making burgers, but I bought lettuce as a topping. Maybe you can just have that instead." Lonnie turned to the fridge. "I don't have dressing, but you don't need that anyway."

That was how it went. Will came. Lonnie checked in, talked, and gave advice— or rather—criticized.

That was the price of tuition.

"Mike?" Will dropped his bag on the sofa. Mike had recently been promoted to assistant manager at Enzo's, where he had started as a server. Working there had been good for his developing cooking skills, a lot of which he'd picked up from the restaurant. It was also the reason he didn't call out of work to join Will on his trip to see Lonnie that day, like he would have before he was promoted.

"In the kitchen!" Mike called.

The smell of something burning met Will's nose before he stepped in.

"What's burning?" Will's face scrunched at the scent.

His eyes landed on Mike, who was running cold water over a pan of something charred black.

"Um, dinner." Mike's face held a shy smile. "I brought pasta from work, but I was trying to cook some chicken and veggies to add to it so there'd be enough for both of us."

Will glanced at the blackened food again, raising his brows as he took in the information.

"I just went to switch the laundry around, and I guess I had the heat too high…" He trailed off, eyes following Will's to the sink. Mike's forest scent was sharp and alert. "Sorry, I figured we could eat together. I'll have to restart. I used all the veggies, but I have more chicken in the freezer—"

"That's okay, Mike." Will smiled at Mike's dedication, his own scent expanding naturally to relax the alpha. "I ate at Lonnie's, so you can just have the pasta. There's enough there for one, right?"

Mike frowned. "Well, yeah, but— are you sure? When did you eat with him?"

"Just before I left. So, like an hour ago."

"Oh. Well, I guess if you're sure." He looked at Will expectantly, to which Will nodded.

Mike left the pan in the sink to soak for a bit and grabbed the to-go box full of pasta. They settled in the living room, turning on a show for background noise.

"How was Lonnie?" Mike's tone was careful as he chewed, as it always was when it came to the alpha.

"Fine." Will let himself melt into the couch.

Mike's scent, more relaxed and finally stronger than the burning smell, wrapped around him. His scent had always been calming to Will.

Safe alpha.

There weren't many alpha scents that relaxed him, and even fewer that had the effect Mike's did on him, especially recently. It relaxed him, seeping into his lungs and calming him from the inside out. He hadn't placed it before, but his anxiety from his time with Lonnie only seemed to calm once he was able to take in a few gulps of Mike's pure scent.

"Was he nice?"

Will stared at the TV. "He was normal." He shrugged, head falling against the couch with the rest of him.

"So no." Will saw him shake his head through the corner of his eye. "I don't know why you put up with him."

"He's paying my—"

"Tuition. Yes, I know." Mike took another bite, but his eyes were trained on Will. "But you don't really… need him. You could afford it without him."

"Well, yeah, but it would be harder. Plus, I like having a little extra money."

"I know, I'm just saying, if you ever decide to cut him off, I'd support you." Mike swallowed his food but didn't dive in for another bite. "In your decision, but also, uh, with school." His scent was unsure, like he was waiting for a reaction from Will, but he wasn't sure what it would be.

Will frowned, pushing his head off the couch and turning to look fully at Mike. "What?"

"Like, financially. I'd help you."

"You'd pay my tuition?" Will raised his brows. The thought shocked him, seeming to come out of thin air.

"Yeah, I mean, I'm making more money now, and rent is still cheap. I wouldn't mind helping you if it got you away from him."

"I couldn't let you do that. Plus, imagine how it would look, what people would think." Will didn't want to bring it up, but someone had to. An alpha didn't just pay for his omega best friend's tuition and ask for nothing in return. It would look like they were courting. It would likely look like they were mated, but with no bite, it would look like they were just in the later stages of courting, a bite presenting itself any day.

Mike looked away at that, as though he'd already thought of it, but the words audibly in the air made him… nervous?

"Well, yeah… but does it really matter? I mean, would that be so bad?"

"I guess not." Will frowned again, confused. "But any omegas you're interested in would think… Wouldn't think you're available." He tried to ignore the ache that pulled at him, accompanying his words.

He didn't want to bring it up. He didn't want to think of other omegas and Mike in the same breath, but how much harder would it be later on? When Mike was interested in someone who wasn't Will and was still supporting him financially? How would that look? What would they say?

Would Mike stop supporting him? The idea of Mike caring for him in that way and then stopping abruptly for another omega was too much to bear now. He wasn't sure he could bear actually living through it.

Somehow, his words seemed to startle Mike.

"That's a— that's—"

"I couldn't take your money anyway, Mike." He forced a smile. "You're sweet to offer, though."

Mike's speechlessness continued, meal still on hold as he stared at Will. When he finally found his words, his scent didn't quite match them.

"Uh, yeah. Of course." He pulled his eyes from Will, staring at the noodles in his to-go box for a moment before stabbing a couple with his fork. "Just let me know if you change your mind. Okay?"

Though he knew he wouldn't, Will nodded. "Okay." He just couldn't. It would be too hard.

Later that night, when Mike offered him his bed, Will declined, eyes anywhere but on Mike.
