Summary
Two years after their first meeting, Mez'iraejss summons Athux alone. No sisters, no distributed working, no borrowed weight. He arrives expecting what two years of solitary study generally produces: a girl grown more confident in her ignorance, armed with questions shaped by the limits of what texts alone can teach. What he finds is a circle better than the one that held him before, a notebook dense with two years of refinement, and a seventeen-year-old who has been subjecting lesser tanar'ri to interrogation by torment. Before the third question is finished, he discovers that something which has kept its silence in him since the last war worth the name has roused itself, and that the girl on the other side of her circle, with her notebook and her veil and her careful, patient accounting of everything he is, is going to be a great deal more trouble than he had thought to prepare for.
