   November 22nd, 2011: Columbia Records announced One Direction’s American deal.
   Louis went out after midnight in the maroon shirt Harry told him not to wear.
   Danny tweeted through the club, cab, and aftermath.
   At 12:23pm, Harry tweeted that Louis had got in Harry’s bed with tea.
   Louis tweeted him from beside him.
   Harry tweeted, “that’s my knee....”
   Two days later, Ed Sheeran wrote “Friends.”

   One Direction are on the edge of America. Louis is nineteen and drunk on attention. Harry is seventeen, stuck in their flat, too young for the clubs Louis disappears into, and too in love to pretend it doesn’t hurt.
   Not a breakup.
   Almost worse.
   A maroon shirt. A stranger’s mouth. Zayn in the cold. Danny’s bathroom floor. A bath Harry runs furious. Tea made properly. Rules made by two boys who don’t know how to keep private love from feeling like a lie.
   Then Ed calls.
   Because friends do not wait in another boy’s bed.
   Friends do not make rules about girls, boys, clubs, cameras, and lies.
   Friends do not love like this.
