Work Text:

Heads are supposed to think. They have all the time to do so with bodies meant to act either for or against those thoughts. She lifted her head with its heavy cage- which yes, it is her head despite her head claiming otherwise- all the way up to make sure she could meet the other princess in the eye. She didn't have to do that. She could have let these feelings bubble inside her until they exploded, killing everyone in the vicinity. But they choose to do this. Just for her head to put their thoughts in the lamest terms ever.

“I don’t think she likes you.”

What an understatement.

And of course The Deep Heart didn't even bother to respond, only continuing to stare down at them. Her blood boiled. Deep must have floated higher to avoid being on the same level as them. She must think she's so much better, just like everyone else, but the only difference is that she didn't give a million arguments and counterarguments to justify herself. She didn't try to announce her existence. Deep hovered in the background and just let things be even if it was to her own detriment.

And she won't let it. She didn't want things to be like this! She still had things to say, things to do

The Watchful dropped her head and at the least second, swung the cage towards Deep. If she had a body, she would have been thrown backwards. Only chill air ran through her hair as Open swiped into Deep’s head.

The cage fell on its side unceremoniously.

She'll never understand. She'll never even care. Why was she even bothering? Why was Deep still there?

“Don't you have something better to do then to wait for us to pull ourselves together?”

Cold eyes forever unblinking. They stayed there in silence. She wanted to know however, what Deep thought of this. Surely there was a reason why she didn't already leave. What was she feeling? Could she even feel? She was so detached from everything that maybe she saw her actions were merely an interesting tidbit of the day.

She almost missed it when she said something.

“What?”

Her eyes drifted up, up, up, all the way to Deep’s dark face in the sky.

Deep refused to repeat herself. But it registered quickly.

“My feelings don’t matter. I know you exist, and I do think about you, but my body is the one who wants to act on these feelings. Her feelings. I don't think it'll lead to anything, but I can't stop her.”

“How disappointing.”

She searched for a hint of an explanation on Deep’s face, something past the ever present discontentment of everything and now directly at her. Did Deep actually care enough to be here with her? Did Deep think she was lying? Why would she want that to be the truth? Was she lying? How much doesn’t matter? How much was her?

It was all of it. She wanted Deep to know.

It’ll change nothing.

It’ll make everything better.

It’ll make it worse.

It’ll all go away.

It’ll just be confirmation.

She swung again. She didn’t miss.

“Oh.”

The cage lodged itself on the knife sticking out of Deep’s chest. So it really was material.

She watched the ghostly vessel backed away ever so slightly without managing to shake it off. A prickle of satisfaction ran throughout her body. She hoped Deep felt it too, but it'll never be enough.

“Yeah. She doesn't like you.”

Was that seriously the conclusion? Was the blood rushing too fast for her to think straight?

She pulled it back, uncaring how her head banged against bars until it came to a stop. The blade didn’t fall with her. But if she thought carefully, if she imagined it, then from this angle, it looked like it cut deeper. Like Deep had another expression similar to frustration… With a buried spark of curiosity.

Now she was just waiting for Deep to make the next move. She could think over and over about what she would do, but that would be useless. She knew in the end, someone would leave.

And she didn’t want it to be her.

Notes:

............It was going to be much more explicit what the feelings are but then I thought, 'with Cage? No way!'

I'm also wondering if I should do POV (princess name) on all the princess fics. Would that be helpful or interesting for anyone?
