Work Text:
Yawning, Sam started to stir, opening his eyes to see that he was, for some reason, in Dean’s room. Huh, he didn’t remember falling asleep in here. And he wasn’t a sleepwalker. But here he was, lying on his side and staring at the decorations on the wall of the room which were not his. He then realized he also felt an arm around his bare chest, and looked down to see, indeed, an arm around him. He followed it back to see Cas behind him connected to said arm and pressed up against his back. Spooning him.
Huh.
The two of them were also in just their boxers.
What the hell?!
Slowly slipping out of the bed so as to not disturb the sleeping angel, Sam stood up and realized that his vision was a bit lower than it normally was. Not by much, but definitely by at least a couple inches. He looked back down at himself, a bit confused, and noticed that his legs were bowed and the muscles he had were not his own (not that he wasn’t muscular but it was a different look). He rushed over to a mirror in the room and was startled to find Dean looking back at him in the mirror. He moved a bit and the reflection of Dean moved the same way.
Oh.
Oh no.
He was in Dean’s body.
Slipping on the robe that he’d gotten Dean for Christmas (so that he didn’t have to wear a dead man’s robe anymore), he walked down the hall to his own bedroom. He opened the door to see his body still fast asleep on his bed, tangled under the covers.
He breathed out a bit and walked around the bed to see his own body and face asleep. It was such a weird feeling.
Was this how Dean felt when he killed a shifter that looked like him?
He reached out and shook his? Dean’s? shoulder to try and wake him up. Sometimes Dean woke easily, other times he slept like the dead. It was hard to determine which Dean he’d get any given day. Though Dean tended to wake easily when they were staying in a motel for a case.
It took him shaking his brother a few times and saying his name for Dean to open his? Sam’s? eyes and look to see who’d woken him.
When he did, his eyes shot wide open and he grabbed the gun that Sam also kept under his pillow. So that wasn’t something that would alert Dean that he was in a different room just yet if he wasn’t paying too much attention to the gun itself.
“How the fuck did you get in here?” Dean asked, with Sam’s voice, in a hard tone. Damn, is that really how he sounded when he was that pissed off?
Sam raised his hands so as to not aggravate his recently awakened, confused, and armed older brother. “Woah, woah, Dean! It’s Sam!”
“Like hell! Damn shifter!”
Dean lunged at him, muscle memory kicking in for Sam and allowing him to dodge and move out of the way, raising his hands again as his brother aimed the gun at him again.
“Look, I’ll prove it!” Sam said, picking up a silver knife that was sitting on the dresser in his room (leftover from their hunt as he hadn’t put everything away yet) and cutting himself with it to prove that he wasn’t a shifter. He watched as Dean got visibly confused, watching his own face contort with the emotion.
“The hell?”
“Dean, why don’t you look in a mirror?”
Dean did as he asked, still visibly confused as he looked around the room, seemingly noticing for the first time that he wasn’t in his room. He located where Sam had placed a mirror and walked over, freezing when he saw himself in the mirror. Or rather himself in Sam’s body.
“What the fuck?!”
He turned to look at Sam, then back at the mirror, and then back at Sam. Sam just sighed.
“Remember when that witch we hunted cast some sort of spell that we thought was a dud right before we killed her? I think it was just a delayed reaction and it made us switch bodies.”
Dean’s eyes widened. “We got Freaky Fridayed. Holy shit.” He was quiet for a couple moments. “How the fuck do we fix it?”

Sam and Dean ended up in the library, both still in their pajamas (Sam’s body in pajama pants and a t-shirt and Dean’s body in boxers and his robe) since neither really wanted to change while in their brother’s body. Dean was helping Sam get some books to look through before heading to the kitchen to cook breakfast. They both wanted this fixed as soon as possible. They were both having issues with moving around since they weren’t used to the bodies they currently had. Though the fact that their height difference was only a couple inches made things a little easier.
Eventually, Sam had all the books that he’d determined their library had that might have a possible answer. He also had his laptop out to search online if he couldn’t find anything in their books. Dean headed off to the kitchen to start on breakfast.
Sam had been sitting there for a bit, looking through the spell books they had first, when he felt arms wrap around him from behind. He was too surprised to react when he felt someone’s head nuzzle his neck and then a pair of lips kiss his cheek.
“Good morning,” he heard Cas say from behind him, “I’ll get some coffee for you.”
Sam was still too stunned to speak before Cas left the library and headed towards the kitchen. He vaguely noticed that Cas was wearing some of Dean’s clothes.
Why had he-?
Oh.
Sam was in Dean’s body.
Cas thought he was Dean.
In the chaos of everything, Sam had nearly forgotten about the fact that when he woke up in Dean’s body and in Dean’s bed, Cas had been spooning him with an arm wrapped around his chest and that the two had been in only boxers.
That meant…
He fucking knew it!
He was just wondering how long Dean and Cas had been together. They’d been eye-fucking for years and he’d been getting so sick of it. He just wasn’t sure when they finally got their heads out of their asses long enough to actually get together. Dean hadn’t said anything, and Cas hadn’t either.
“I fucking knew it,” Sam muttered to himself, knowing that he was definitely going to give Dean shit over this.
He also realized that was why Cas had been wearing some of Dean’s clothes whenever they convinced him to wear casual clothes around the bunker. At first Sam assumed that it was because Cas didn’t really have his own clothes aside from the suit and coat, but he never stole any clothes from Sam.
Thinking back on it, the two of them weren’t that subtle. Sam had just tuned out all of their pining because he was being driven nuts by it.

Dean was in the kitchen, cooking breakfast for everyone. The coffee maker was running and he was waiting impatiently for his first cup since he and Sam had been too freaked to worry about getting any before looking for whatever books Sam needed to try and fix this Freaky Friday fuckery as fast as possible.
As he finally got to start sipping his first cup and started up the stove for pancakes, he saw Cas walk in and look at him from where he was standing in the doorway. Dean let himself appreciatively look his boyfriend (!) up and down since he was wearing one of Dean’s older shirts and a pair of sweatpants. He’d gotten Cas to start regularly wearing casual clothes around the bunker more since it was his home too, and even though he’d helped Cas buy his own clothes, he still preferred to wear some of Dean’s.
And Dean did not mind that one bit.
“Mm, wearing one of my shirts again? Looks good like always, though not as good as when you’re not wearing it,” Dean said, smirking at Cas. Cas just tilted his head as he looked at him, narrowing his eyes. That, in turn, made Dean furrow his brow. “You ok, babe?”
That made Cas narrow his eyes even more. After he stared at Dean for a moment or two more, he walked over and placed a couple fingers on Dean’s forehead, expression morphing into slight horror after a few moments as he removed his fingers while looking up at Dean again.
Wait…
Cas wasn’t this much shorter than him-
Oh fuck he forgot he was in Sam’s body.
No wonder Cas kept looking at him with those squinty eyes he did while confused.
“You’re Dean,” Cas said, before Dean could say anything to explain the fuckery that had happened to him and his brother. Dean just nodded. “So that would mean that who I thought was Dean in the library-”
“Is Sam. Yeah,” Dean said, rubbing the back of his neck as he did so. “Sorry, forgot about that for a bit.”
“I, uh, think this means that Sam knows about our relationship now.”
Oh no, Sam was never gonna let him hear the end of him saying ‘I told you so’ after this.
“What did you do?” he hesitantly asked Cas, wondering what he did when he saw who he assumed to be Dean alone in the library.
“I hugged him from behind, nuzzled his neck, and kissed him on the cheek before leaving to get coffee like I do for you when I find you alone in the morning already working on something.”
“Oh, he’s going to be such a pain about this, too,” Dean groaned out in annoyance. “He’s been giving me shit over us needing to get together for years and he’s going to want to know when we got together too. At least he can’t complain about us not telling him since we haven’t been together that long yet.”
“Do you have any idea how long this will last?” Cas asked, looking concerned again. Dean shook his head in response as he finally shook himself out his thoughts enough to actually start cooking the pancakes.
“Not a clue yet. That’s what Sammy is trying to figure out while I started on breakfast. I hope it’s not too long. I can’t do anything I’d want to do with you while I’m in my little brother’s body,” Dean pouted complained, watching as Cas looked at him sympathetically.
This was going to be torture if he had to deal with it too long.

The three of them all ended up in the library, Sam coughing a little when Dean and Cas walked in, which Dean answered with a glare. They ate and then started looking through the books they’d gathered, trying to find anything that could tell them what spell they’d been hit with and how to fix it.
So far, Dean had bupkis.
Then Sam spoke up.
“I think I found something. Looks like it was some form of body swap spell, but tweaked a little. Usually it needs a reversal spell to be performed, but the witch we went after changed the incantation. From what I’ve figured out by translating what she changed, we just have to wait the spell out. It’s supposed to last for two or three days, max. I’m guessing the witch assumed if she hit us with the spell we’d be so thrown off by the switch that she’d have enough time to get away. Problem is she chose one that doesn’t go into effect immediately and doesn’t last until reversed.”
“God, you’re telling me we’re stuck like this for at least two days?!” Dean exclaimed, groaning in annoyance. He wished the witch was still alive so he could kill her just for this.
The one thing he’d been wanting to do after getting home from the hunt, aside from sleeping, was spending time with Cas which would ideally involve at least one of them getting fucked into his mattress. And now he’d had to wait at least two days for that.
The universe really hated him.
~~~~
This was torture.
Especially cause Cas kept wearing Dean’s clothes and each time he saw him wearing them he wanted to pull him back to his room and strip them off and mark Cas’s body up again.
But because of this bullshit spell, he and Cas weren’t even sleeping in the same bed together.
And there’s the fact that he and Sam were stuck in each other’s bodies, which included having to use the bathroom and Dean had never wanted to know information relating to that about his brother’s body. Ever.
He could never un-know it now.
And the two of them had both argued over what food they were eating while in the other’s body. Especially because Sam was so fond of rabbit food and Dean enjoyed most everything except rabbit food (“It’s called a salad, Dean.”)
This couldn’t end soon enough.
~~~~
Sam woke up in Dean’s room. Again.
This time, Cas wasn’t next to him as the two of them weren’t sleeping in the same room together during this entire thing. He stood up from Dean’s bed, making his way hesitantly over to the same mirror he’d looked into a couple days ago, only to see himself this time. Not Dean’s face, but his own. He sighed in relief and left, stopping by his room to grab his workout clothes to go for his usual daily run. They’d been put on hold while they had the body swap issue to deal with because Dean did not do daily runs and Sam wasn’t going to be doing them in Dean’s body.
He noticed Dean sleeping in his bed, tangled in the blankets. He just smiled at his older brother.
It felt nice to get back to his routine and to actually get fresh air since they hadn’t left the bunker while swapped. They’d both been having issues while stuck in the wrong bodies since they weren’t used to the difference.
An hour later he returned to the bunker, noticing that his room was now devoid of Dean’s sleeping body and that Dean’s door was shut and likely locked when he was making his way to the showers.
After showering and locking himself away in his room with his noise-cancelling headphones on (it suddenly made so much sense why Dean bought them for him recently) and made a call.
“Hey, Sam, what’s up?” Garth asked when he answered the phone.
“You owe me twenty bucks,” Sam said without preamble.
“No, really?”
“Really. Dean and Cas are together and Dean is the little spoon,” Sam responded, a grin on his face.
“How’d you find out?”
“Dean and I got hit with a body swap spell and I woke up in his body and he was being spooned by Cas. It was a really confusing morning.”
Garth started laughing and Sam couldn’t help but join in. He’d make fun of his brother over them finally getting together later. He’d also get the details of when and how during then too.
