Chapter 1: The green thing

Chapter Text

Ohyul sighed, tying the back of his smock that was covered in cartoon black cats. He was the first in the daycare as always. He didn't mind being the first sure it was technically Jay’s job but Ohyul enjoyed the silence the dark blue hue that blanketed the room before he turned on the lights there was a slight buzz as they flickered on as much as he tried to ignore it there was a buzzing in his stomach he was excited to see the kids again.

He checked over the room to make sure everything was ready for the kids when he heard yelling down the hall, he's here. Woojin. Before Ohyul could even mentally prepare himself, he was knocked over by the 4 year old squirming in his arms talking a mile a minute, a smile immediately taking over Ohyul’s face.

“Goodmorning woojin, you're in a good mood today huh?” he let out a laugh as the hyper 4 year old finally rolled off of him and ran towards the toy box to grab his favorite dinosaur.

“Mama made waffles. I got to put all the syrup and whip cream I want cause it's my last first day.” Woojin's excitement made Ohyul's heart hurt a little.

Ohyul had grown attached to Woojin, being reminded that this would be the kid’s last day at the daycare seeing how blissfully unaware he was that next year he will be starting kindergarten and won't be able to come to the daycare as often. He shook the thought out of his head, for now Woojin is still here. Ohyul is making it his mission to make sure that Woojin has a fun last year with great memories.

There was a piercing scream, loud cries reverberating throughout the hall, Louis is here. No matter how many times he gets dropped off he still cries bloody murder. His tired father appears at the door, the 2 year old kicking, snot dripping from his nose, his face was all scrunched and red. Ohyul stood up and walked towards the screaming child, softening his voice.

“Goodmorning Louisah, are you ready for today?” He tried taking the boy from his fathers arms but that only made Louis cry louder.

“No! Go away!” His tiny fists gripped his fathers coat burying his face.

“Louis, if you don't come with me you won't be able to eat cookies with the others during snack time. I brought your favorite kind today.” Ohyul peaked his head around to look at Louis' face.

He sniffled loudly looking up at Ohyul raising his arms towards him, a cute pout on his face making Ohyul laugh lightly. The tired father thanked the teen and practically ran down the hall. Woojin immediately ran towards Ohyul.

“Louis, do you want to play dinosaur with me?” He held out the plastic dinosaur with a slightly chewed off tail towards the 2 year old.

He nodded his head letting Ohyul set him on the floor gently, taking the dinosaur and roaring in Woojin's face. The room immediately erupted in giggles and roaring. Ohyul took advantage of their playing by taking off their shoes and setting them in their designated cubbies. There was a quiet knock at the door as it slid open revealing Ryul.

“Goodmorning everyone, sorry I'm late, practice lasted longer than planned.” He walked over to his smock hanging in the corner that was covered in cartoon gorillas.

The boys immediately ran towards him practically tripping at his heels.

“Ryul! Ryul! My mom let me eat all the whip cream and syrup I wanted today!”

“Ryul! Ohyul said I don't get a cookie.”

“What? No way that's great woojin. Let's hope you don't get a tummy ache. Louis I will make sure you get a cookie today, don't listen to Ohyul.”

Ohyul's mouth dropped “excuse me you're supposed to be helping me not enabling them.”

A smirk took over Ryul's lips. Ohyul felt his cheeks warm out of anger. No one got on his nerves more than Ryul, the cocky baseball pitcher.

They became friends by accident their last year of junior high back when Ryul wasn't the best student Ohyul naturally, being the class president, was assigned the job of straightening him out. By the end of the year they were best friends. Just like their friendship, joining the babysitters club was completely by accident, during freshman orientation Jay had tricked them into joining the club by saying it was a club where you played with kids. What they didn't know was that the kids would be below the age of five and they would have to wipe their snotty noses and kiss booboos that weren't even visible.

“From the looks of it Jay isn't here yet.” Ryul huffed flopping onto the kids mini couch.

“You know he's always late. I don't know why you think so highly of him.” Ohyul sighed, taking Ryuls' shoes off as well and putting his slippers on for him.

Old habits died hard he supposed.

There was a light tap at the door as one of the fathers peaked his head through it.

Ryul sat up at light speed teleporting to the door, “good morning mister james how are you.”

The father laughed nodding his head, “im great son thank you, anyways im in a rush im just here to drop off the boys,” he stepped to the side 4 boys politely filed in.

As soon as the father was down the hall the three boys exploded Martin running towards Woojin tackling him they playfully wrestled on the floor. The twins Seonghyeon and Keonho ran to Louis pulling out their sticky pokemon cards to show them off.

The calmest of them, Juhoon, quietly walked towards Ohyul.

“Goodmorning Juhoon, are you tired?”

The four year old nodded his head rubbing his heavy eyelids. The older one laughed at how cute he looked when he was tired.

Ohyul counted heads everyone was here except for the baby but Jay was probably picking her up. Clapping his hands loudly he sat down at the carpet the kids obediently sat around him just like they had been taught. Ryul sat next to his friend handing him a chapter book setting up his hand puppets.

“While we wait for mister Jay to arrive, Ryul and I will read you a story.”

Louis scooted close to Ryul he especially enjoyed when he acted out the scenes.

“Today we are reading a scary story. Do you guys think you can handle it?” Ohyul teased wiggling his fingers at the kids.

Martin raised his hand Ohyul gave him a nod signaling the 4 year old to talk, “my dad says monsters aren't real so there isn't anything to be scared of.”

Ohyul nodded, “he's right, monsters aren't real so there isn't anything to be scared of, this story is just for fun ok?”

“This one time I hear crying from the closet and I got scared. I thought it was a ghost but I forgot I left Keonho in there while playing hide seek." Seonghyeon blurted out.

Ryul snickered quietly, and Ohyul elbowed his ribs. Louis had a worried look on his face, scooting even closer to Ryul, his small fist clenching the gorilla smock.

“Right, ok , we should all learn the lesson to not hide in places that have locks on them. Anyways, let's begin.”

As Ohyul read the story Ryul acted out the story with his hand puppets the story was a story of a girl who was adventurous one day she broke her mothers rules and traveled too far away from home she was lost and began to cry when suddenly there was a hissing noise from a bush when she looked at it there was a long skinny green tail slithering from it. The girl was so frightened she ran wherever her legs had led her. Somehow she had made it home and from then on she listened to her mothers rules and never ventured too far out alone.

As Ohyul read the story, Louis hid his face in Ryul's lap, his knuckles turning white peaking up every once and a while every time the story piqued his interest. Woojin,Martin, and Juhoon listened to the story politely Woojin and Martin occasionally poked at Juhoon's waist trying to spook him, he simply swatted at their hands giving his full attention to the story. The twins of course sat with their mouths hanging open, completely engrossed in the “scary story”, their eyes tracking every movement Ryul made with the puppets and holding onto each other when the green thing was described.

Ohyul snapped the book shut, making the boys jump in their seats.

“Ok so what did we think of the story?” Ohyul gauged their reactions.

“What was the thing with the green tail?” Woojin asked, rocking back and forth.

“Well what did you think it was?” Ryul raised an eyebrow.

“Was it a monster?” Louis asked, there was a slight tremble in his voice making Ryul's heart melt. He pulled the little boy into his lap, hugging him tightly.

“There's no such thing as monsters. Louis don't worry besides even if it was one it only appeared because she broke her moms rules and you have never broken your mothers rules have you?” Ryul rubbed the child's back soothingly. Louis shook his head no.

“Seonghyeon broke a rule the other day. He locked me in the closet. Does that mean the monster is coming for him?” Keonho said innocently.

Louis yelped, burying his head into Ryul's chest.

“You’re stupid monsters aren't real, Martin's dad said so.” Woojin said, poking the younger twin's shoulder.

Keonho's mouth dropped, offended, grabbing his shoulder glaring at Woojin. “Ohyul Woojin called me, something bad in english put him in timeout.”

“Woojin, where did you learn that word?”

Woojin sat up straight, pointing at Martin who was looking everywhere but at Ohyul.

“Martin, where did you learn that word?” Ohyul sternly asked, setting the book down.

“My cousins from the states…” he put his head down sadly.

“If you knew it was a bad word, why would you teach it to others?” Ryul asked, Louis' eyes flickering between Martin and Ohyul.
“I don't know.” Martin mumbled.

Ohyul sighed as the morning just started and he already had to deal with timeouts.

“Ok Martin, Woojin go to your corners and count to 200.” Ryul ordered.

“But I don't know how to count 200,” Woojin whined.

“Weird that you know how to use rude words but not how to count to 200.” the teen remarked.

Woojin huffed trudging towards his corner with his head hanging Martin following behind him.

Suddenly there was a commotion at the door. Jay was finally here and he had 9 month old Mari strapped to his chest with a brand new baby carrier.

“Hey boys sorry I'm late, Maris mom didn't give me instructions on how baby carriers worked so it took a lot of trial and error.” He took his shoes off at the door slipping on his unicorn slippers that the twins had bought him for his birthday last year.

“Your job is literally to carry babies for a living. What are you talking about?” Ryul scoffed, setting Louis down next to Juhoon Ohyul following Ryul towards the door.

“Shut up punk, you boys, get to class I don't want your teachers sending me an angry email that I keep making you late or whatever.” he waved a hand at them dismissively.

“Make sure they don't kill each other. Jay, we will be back during lunch for your break.” Ohyul slipped his shoes on and grabbed his school bag.

“I know what im doing you punks I take care of kids for a living.” he lifted his hand threatening to smack the teens upside the head.

Mari babbled, holding her hands out towards the boy's two small teeth peeking out. Ohyul couldn't resist pinching her cheeks, Ryul bent down to kiss her soft hair. The two excused themselves heading to class not knowing the commotion they would come back to during lunch.
