The former Head of the Petrova Taskforce was supposed to spend the rest of her life in a cell. The second the Hail Mary cleared orbit, governments that had tolerated her authority only because extinction was imminent suddenly rediscovered their principles. They stripped her of her emergency powers, arrested her, and locked her away to answer for a long list of crimes committed in the name of survival.
The arrangement lasted less than three years.
Life, as her undergraduate history major had taught her, was an unrelenting cycle of misery, an endless battle for food and resources where the rules of civilization only applied until they didn’t. As the Sun dimmed further and harvests failed across entire continents, several very important people arrived at the same conclusion: if they wanted civilization to survive long enough for Ryland Grace’s mission to matter, they needed Eva Stratt more than they needed justice.
So they opened the cell door.
The former Head of the Petrova Taskforce knew no days off. She had to manage global rationing, suppress regional resource riots, and negotiate with bureaucratic parasites who still thought national borders mattered on a dying planet. Because of this, she found herself traveling all over a fracturing world. She was, in a sense, a tyrant, and tyrants have their own way of getting around.
For instance, aboard an armored icebreaker cutting through the half-frozen slush of a dying ocean.
The first recovered Beetle, John, had been opened a week ago, its data intact while the tracking arrays continued to monitor the remaining three hulls. For the first time in years, every report crossing Eva Stratt’s desk was a victory. Humanity, as it turned out, responded remarkably well to the sudden prospect of not dying.
It should have made her happy. Instead, she was tired.
People became tired. Even Eva Stratt. She was exhausted in a deep, unpleasant way that sleep did not seem capable of fixing. Though it was not as if this was the first day she had felt that way.
A gloomy sky, a biting winter wind, a pitch-black horizon.
Because the vessel operated as a restricted military facility, the outer deck was deserted. She appreciated this artificial, vacant emptiness far more than the frantic chaos of the war rooms or the concrete walls of her cell in France. She stood at the rail for several minutes, watching black water disappear into black horizon, catching herself wondering what Grace would think of all this. The thought had appeared without permission. Humanity had spent years waiting for an answer from twelve light-years away, and now that it had finally arrived, she found herself wanting to write back.
The impulse was irrational. Worse, it was sentimental. Stratt had never been particularly fond of either.
She returned inside. Within the ship’s fluorescent-lit research block, she found Dr. Hatch, the overly optimistic Canadian aerospace engineer who had built the Beetles and insisted on naming them after his favourite band. The names had always struck Stratt as a peculiar indulgence.
"Dr. Hatch," she called out, tucking her hands into her coat pockets. "A hypothetical question. If we wanted to re-target a tracking chassis, or say, the original ground-test prototype built to the Beetles' exact specifications, and send a data transmission toward 40 Eridani... what would the navigation setup require?"
The scientist paused, looking up from his calculations in surprise. "Re-target? Ma'am, the Beetles don't work that way. They use automated visible-light cameras to recognize stars and identify constellations to find their way. They can navigate toward a coordinate from anywhere in the local cluster, but sending one to a foreign star system without an established Deep Space Network on the other end to decode a return transmission? It’s a blind cast."
"We have the telemetry data from the John return payload," Stratt noted.
"That vector is over sixteen light-years long," Hatch shrugged. "We can program the autonomous navigation matrix to calculate the relativistic flight profile and execute a deceleration burn at the destination, sure. But we have no way of knowing if anyone on Erid could detect a radio transmission. Without a receiver on their end to capture the signal, the craft will simply become a mute object in a system where no one knows to look for it."
"I see," Stratt said. "Forget it, then."
The answer should have ended the matter. Instead, Stratt found herself thinking about it as she walked back through the ship.
For most of her life, Eva Stratt had measured every decision against a simple standard: would it accomplish anything? The habit had served her well. It had built laboratories, launched spacecraft, reorganized governments, and kept several billion people alive considerably longer than statistics suggested they ought to have been.
A message to 40 Eridani accomplished nothing. No one would read it. The transmission would not improve crop yields, stabilize supply chains, accelerate deployment, or reduce projected mortality by a single percentage point. In every measurable sense, it was useless.
Which was perhaps why Hatch’s answer had been so strangely reassuring.
Had there been any realistic expectation that the message would be found, she would have been forced to justify the effort. But the brutal impossibility brought a strange, conflicting comfort. She didn't actually need Ryland Grace to receive it, nor did she need his forgiveness or his understanding. The fact that it would drift blindly into nothingness gave her the shield she needed to finally let it out.
Stratt disliked examining her own motives. Other people were easier. Given enough incentives and pressure, they behaved with reassuring predictability. Her own mind was considerably less cooperative.
She entered her small, cramped cabin. The room was functional, devoid of personal touch. The desk lamp cast a small, lonely circle of amber light across a rugged digital tablet. She sat down and opened a blank document.
For a long time, she stared at the empty, blinking cursor. She had thought about this for years, but she had never actually done it. There was no reason for it. They belonged to different worlds now. She had turned away from him in a high-security cell in Baikonur, leaving him to face the guards and the sedative needles alone, with only his furious, resentful glare fixed on her as the heavy steel door closed between them.
When someone looks at you with that kind of betrayal, the memory acquires a certain permanence even if you leave them behind for a lifetime. A letter could solve nothing. Least of all a letter addressed to a man who would never receive it. But she was going to write it anyway.
Not to mention, they had shared a frantic, compressed year, one that, looking back, she found impossible to disentangle into its terror and its wonder. They had been so inseparable that the scientists in the labs had whispered behind their backs, with DuBois openly assuming they were engaged in some kind of utilitarian sexual congress. Grace had been entirely mortified by the rumors, but the truth was far less scandalous and arguably more intimate: they were simply two people trapped inside the machinery of a crisis, having become each other’s only reliable point of reference.
She leaned forward, her fingers hovering over the keys.

Factions within the global coalition wanted to bury the details of the drafting process, but I ensured the records remained transparent. There are monuments being planned in several administrative sectors. I have declined invitations to attend the groundbreakings.
I assume you do not care about the statues. Back in Baikonur, when you were screaming at me through your tears, you told me that a monument was small consolation for a forced suicide mission. You were entirely correct. But I also told you that you would do your job anyway because you were a fundamentally good man. I recognized in you early on a persistent gentleness completely unsuited for the cruelty of crisis management, yet entirely incapable of turning away from a world in pain. It had to be you, Ryland. And, despite everything, I am glad it is still you.
Stratt’s fingers came to a sudden, rigid halt over the keys. She stared at the screen, her brow furrowing slightly in the dim amber light of her terminal lamp. A strange, entirely unquantifiable sensation tightened in her chest. She stared at the final line for several seconds, her finger hovering directly over the backspace key.
Ultimately, she didn't press it. It didn’t matter. He wasn’t going to read the file anyway.
She shifted her posture slightly and moved directly to the next log.
It has been twenty-six years since your departure. The eighth-grade children you taught are now adults. Case file fourteen, identified in your lesson plans as the boy named Eric, is currently a senior researcher at the primary subterranean agricultural facility in Nevada. When the frost began and the schools were converted into local shelters, he managed to dismantle the large solar system mobile that hung from the center of your classroom ceiling. He carried the wire-and-paper models of those planets through three separate evacuation cycles.
According to his regional clearance profile, he hung that same crude model of Jupiter from the concrete ceiling of the Nevada facility to teach astronomy to the younger children in the shelters during the winter of Year Six. He told them the story of the man who went into the dark to fix the sun. He is currently thirty-nine years old, specializing in radiation-resistant crop sequencing. Stratt reached up, her hand brushing against the thick, coarse wool of the black knit beanie pulled low over her brow. It was the one he had left on the lab bench in Baikonur right before the security team had moved in to isolate him. She had taken it from the table after they carried him out, stuffing it into her coat pocket without thinking. She was wearing it now because the icebreaker’s heating grid was failing in the northern sectors, and she required efficient insulation.
It was a perfectly practical choice.
Yet, as she looked at the text file on the screen, a sudden wave of irritation twisted in her chest. The wool smelled faintly of chemical reagents and stale coffee. It was a completely redundant, foolish piece of sentimentality, a useless object from a world that no longer existed.

I am less certain what you would think of me. At launch, you were quite clear on the subject. Years have passed since then, and I still do not know whether that makes a difference.

Eva Stratt swallowed hard, her chest tightening. The ambient hum of the icebreaker's ventilation units gave her a steady, monotonous rhythm to keep typing.
Ryland, at the time I believed the matter was settled. I had examined the available options, selected the least catastrophic one, and accepted the consequences. There was very little else to discuss. The ship needed a crew. Humanity required a future. But you, your resistance caused me pain.
Your screaming caused me pain.
You demanded a choice, but what choice could I possibly give you? My actions answered everything. I have never gone against my duty. I believed that was what survival required back then, so I executed the mandate. I was bewildered by your cowardice. But over the years, I have gradually come to realize, you weren’t just asking for your freedom. You were asking how any of us could live with ourselves on the other side of this crisis after what we had to do to get that ship into the sky. You were asking if saving the species was worth losing our humanity.
Now, as I record this response and look back on everything from that cell in Baikonur, I find that my answer back then still holds true. Ryland, your sacrifice had meaning. It is a cold answer, one that lays bare the extent of my pragmatism and makes it seem as though I can absolve myself of any emotional responsibility. I am aware of how that sounds, and I am deeply sorry.
When I drugged you and put you aboard that transport, I had already written myself out of your story. However you choose to interpret the months we spent together in those laboratories, I consent to it completely.
And if you hate me, I understand as well. But I don't think you do.

He plugged the storage unit directly into his workstation, watching the screen initialize a directory of standard engineering logs, navigation records, and maintenance data. Then, right at the bottom of the archive, he found a final, supplemental file.

For a long moment, Ryland Grace simply stared at the blinking cursor. Then, his fingers steady, he opened it.
...I have said all of this, but to be honest, it is entirely pointless. These words cannot rewrite the path we took, and the physics of interstellar travel dictate you will never read them. But if there is one truth I need left clear, if only to state plainly that I took no satisfaction in dismantling your life, it is this:
When I gave the command to isolate and sedate you in Baikonur, had there been even the slimmest margin where my obligation to the species could yield to a personal choice, I would have boarded that ship with you.
I will not pretend to regret what I did. If I were forced back to that exact crossroad tomorrow, I would lock you in that room all over again to guarantee the survival of humanity. I have no excuses to offer, and I will make no defense for my tyranny. Your hatred is entirely justified, and I expect nothing less.
In fact, given my terrible, arrogant pragmatism, and the absolute certainty of the world we saved, I prefer that you do not forgive me.
