Summary
Aerys knew the numbers, the whispers of the maesters. A girl flowered too young was not fully formed inside. The cradle was too small, the bones too narrow. Joanna had been a woman grown, strong and healthy, and look what had become of her. What chance did a child have?
The sweet vision bloomed behind his eyes: Cersei Lannister, so small a child, swelling grotesquely. The difficult pregnancy, the screams in the birthing bed that would echo. The blood. There would be so much sweet blood. A stillborn babe, twisted and silent. Or perhaps a living one, sickly, a weakling—one that could die within moons. By nature's hands or otherwise. And the girl… she could bleed out, pale as milk under her tresses, her eyes glassy and empty.
Tywin would have his royal marriage. And then he would have a dead daughter and a dead grandchild. He would have his ambition repaid in ashes and shrouds. He would learn the price of reaching for a dragon. That the gods, the true gods of fire and blood, were not so easily bribed with Lannister gold.
A laugh bubbled up in Aerys’s throat, a dry, rattling sound.
He would draft the decree himself. The betrothal of Prince Rhaegar Targaryen to Lady Cersei Lannister.
