Chapter Text
I found a mirror on my way home from school
It was dirtied and battered
Clear damage from whoever abandoned it before
It was on the side of the road, leaning against a trashcan
Something about it demanded attention
I took it home
I found a mirror on my way home from school
I could tell it once shined brightly
The glass still had a faint sparkle
The frame only a bit splintered
It had potential to reflect beautifully
It just needed a little cleaner and TLC
The mirror could become brand new
Looking back, I think something in me needed this mirror to be
Looking into it then I didn't see much
Not past all the dirt and grime
So I worked on it
Told everyone about it too
About how much effort put into it
One day it'll be speck free, I said
It would shine so much you'd think its new
The mirror I found on my way home from school I once thought could be my memoir
Thought it would be physical evidence of my diligence and dedication
It was on the side of my bed, leaning against a wall
Sat there for a while too
Anyone could see the mirror was unfinished
It looked like a stain in my otherwise clean room
The same smears on the glass and splinters in its frame
The mirror demanded attention
And was therefore questioned
"Shouldn't it be done by now?" they'd say
And I couldn't answer because there was no excuse to why it hadn't
It wasn't much to look at
Which isn't suprising since nothing changed
It sat as a taunt
Its dirtied glass relfecting someone whose not mich different
The mirror demanded attention
Looking into it felt like it was reflecting cruel words onto my forehead
Like it was agreeing with everything I thought
The mirror sat as a reminder
So physical it almost resembled humanity
In the way it sat for so long to show patience
And in the way it got fed up and sneered
Looking into the mirror I saw myself
Different in only the dirt that seemingly covered my face
In how the splintered frame boxed in my figure
How the cracks showed the neglect I've given it
The mirror relfects only whats there, I thought
So we really weren't that different
The mirror from school was an eyesore
It was a blantant reminder of who I could be
It only emphasized what I am not
In a place everyone's free to see
As if my reflection liked what it got
From my reaction as it sneered down at me
Looking at it, the mirror sits as a sign to others as the failed attempt
It's dirty and unkempt
I imagine people basing their assumption of me after looking at it
I imagine people seeing the dichotomy of me vs my reflection
They'll know that one has to be true
And a mirror only reflects whats there
The mirror I found on my way home from school was meant to be just that
Left alone
Dirtied and battered
I bet only a little damage was from whoever had it before
And a bit more who had it before them
That its current state was collective from all its owners who saw something to fix and wanted to prove that they can
They all found it was on the side of the road, leaning against a trashcan
Something in themselves wanted the attention
They took it home
Couldnt stand the sight of it
And took it back to where they found it again
There was an old mirror on my way home from school
Had to avoid eye contact when I passed it everyday
Because I'll want to take it home if I see it again just to prove I'll be better than before
Though when I look down I don't see the mirror
Then I'll know it demanded someone else's attention
That someone saw themselves in it more
