rabbit end of life behaviors

When a wild rabbit reaches the end of its life, either through injury, illness, environmental conditions, or old age, it will generally seek out dense vegetation or a dark, quiet shelter to spend its final moments. Rabbits will typically exhibit sudden shifts of behavior as their body shuts down; abnormal breathing, loss of appetite, lethargy, and isolation are all common end-of-life behaviors, and because they are prey animals, these behaviors serve to mask the severity of their condition from predators. After a life of running, the rabbit is tired.

Humans are generally advised to intervene only when an animal is visibly injured, orphaned, or unable to care for itself. In these situations, a skilled rehabilitator may provide a chance for meaningful recovery. However, it is important for humans to assess the extent of the animal’s condition and quality of life carefully, as unnecessary handling to an extremely ill or fatally injured animal may cause additional stress during the dying process.

In such cases, it is best to leave the animal completely alone.
