Work Text:
It was cold tonight, far colder then Taishen expected when he settled down for his watch. Shivers racking his body like violent waves crashing against golden scales as he wrapped what clothes he wore tighter around himself. Even with the fire mere feet from his frame he couldn't stop the steady shivering of his shoulders with each passing second. "Calm down Taishen. Try and focus." His own voice wavered quietly against the wind. Allowing his eyes to shut briefly to try and focus his mind on the small bit of warmth the flame seemed to provide. In through the nose, out through the mouth, and repeat. These exercises weren’t deliberately complicated, allowing the cold air to flood his lungs before he breathes out warm steam.
It felt like minutes had passed for Taishen as he sat with his eyes shut—letting himself be centered once more— before his thoughts are pulled to his surroundings and the heavy warmth that now surrounded him. Green eyes flutter open at the added weight on his shoulders, peaking over to his side as an all too familiar figure sits quietly to Taishens side.
"Jornir— my friend, you are awake. Is something the matter?" The question felt silly but held true with worry. Drakkar may have been a harsh land in many ways, but sleep was a necessity, especially under such cold conditions.
"I could not sleep. May I– stay watch with you.?" While Jornis voice usually sounded very monotone and plain when he spoke, it was clear by the soft inflection that— this time— it held immense warmth.
With a small shuffle of the massive seal pelt that now laid across Taishens shoulders all he could do was smile warmly up at the Firbolg. "I could certainly use the company. " The warmth from his smile spread across his scaled cheeks at the sight before him. A small smile pulled at the edges of Jornirs lips, painting his usual unbothered face into one of admiration. Timidly Taishen looks back at the flame, allowing small fits of nervous laughter to bubble out of him.
"Th-thank you as well, my friend. For the pelt. I feel much warmer now..Though I need not keep it." While the words cascaded out from his maw Taishen fumbled to remove the pelt to return it, being stopped by a large warm hand carefully wrapping the pelt more securely around his golden scales. "Keep it for tonight. I assure you I will not freeze, Taishen." Jornir made it a point that having the Dragonborn warm was far more important then his own Warmth. Though even now he could see Jornirs shoulders shiver against the wind as it snakes past them. This small reaction put Taishen into movement before he could even rub two thoughts together.
Lithe golden limbs shuffle up next to the large stature of Jornir, settling one half of the pelt over the Firbolgs shoulders before coming to rest against the others body. "We may share. If thats alright." Taishens voice was soft, accompanied by green eyes that held fawning love behind immense warmth. Golden scales being pulled ever the closer by that of Jornir as a hand rest lovingly against his lower back. Those staggering greens met that of crystalline blue and white that mirrored a similar fawning love behind intense warmth.
"That is–more then fine with me." With Jornirs final words of agreement the two settled into a peaceful silence.
Though not many more verbal words filled their time, it was clear to the both of them, that the words they shared need not be spoken outloud. Allowing their hearts to speak the phrases they could not, filling the cold Drakkarren night with warmth once more.
