Work Text:
Dj is in love with a witch. A pretty, green-haired witch with a stupid name. And as much as he wants to deny his feelings, he knows he can’t anymore. The thing is, how long can he keep this secret from said witch? No one knows yet, but he doesn’t think he’s being super subtle about it, so how long until Superfish himself figures out? Dj is terrified of that happening, so he’s been distancing himself from Superfish and doing anything and everything he can to take his mind off of him. But there’s only so much he can take of this until he breaks.

Dj sat awkwardly in the occult club room as Eugene rambled on about whatever it is that he’s rambling on about. He picked at the peeling leather of the couch beneath him and tried not to pay any mind to Superfish, who sat just a few feet away from him. Occasionally he caught said witch looking at him from the corner of his eye, but he pretended not to notice.
After a few minutes, Dj felt someone nudging him and glanced over to see Superfish, who looked 10 seconds away from leaving the meeting.
“Are you actually listening to any of this?” He murmured with disinterest.
“Yeah, yeah I’m listening,” Dj lied without meeting his gaze.
To be honest, he couldn’t even tell you where the conversation was going, but he had to say something. However, the witch clearly didn’t buy it.
“Oh yeah? Name one topic that Eugene has brought up.”
“Um…I forgot.”
“Exactly, so let’s leave and go do something better.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“I can’t just leave like that.”
“Why?”
“Because that’s rude.”
The witch narrowed his eyes at Dj, then rolled them. “Suit yourself.”

The meeting concluded after an hour or maybe two, and Dj left as quickly as he could without waiting for Superfish like usual. He feels bad for doing so with no explanation, but he’ll find an excuse if he questions it.
When he gets home, he receives a call from Superfish while cleaning. He could just hang up and that would be that, but he already feels guilty about what happened earlier so he answers.
“Hello?” Dj says.
“Forget about me or something?” Superfish replies sounding irritated.
Just play dumb, Dj thinks to himself.
“What do you mean?”
Not that dumb, you idiot!
“I thought we were supposed to walk together, but you decided to leave without me.”
“Oh um…I wasn’t feeling good?”
There’s silence on the other end, and Dj can only hope that he doesn’t question anything. Thankfully, his wishes were granted and Superfish lets it go, but he still sounds suspicious of him.
“Right, I forgot humans had weak immune systems.”
“Yeah, haha. Anyways, I have to go now.”
“Whatever, bye bye.”
“Bye.”
Dj hangs up the call and lets out a sigh of relief. Things between him and Superfish were going to be a little awkward for now, and he feels bad for lying to him like this, but he can’t tell him how he feels. He just hopes that Superfish can forgive him.

A few days have passed since Dj started avoiding Superfish, and nothing is getting easier. Superfish decided he wants to be closer to Dj than usual, and god he wants to let him, but it’ll only fuel his growing feelings which cannot be reciprocated.
What’s even worse is that Superfish also decides to corner him during their lunch period. It seems that he finally got fed up with the way Dj was acting, but he doesn’t get it.
“Why have you been acting so weird lately?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Dj says quickly as he tries to escape, but Superfish quickly places another hand by his head.
“Oh? So you wanna act like you haven’t been avoiding me?”
“I haven’t!”
“I’m not stupid, Dj.”
“Let’s not do this right now, okay?”
“Then when? You said that last time and you left me.”
“I…I don’t know, okay? Let’s just start heading to class so we’re not late.”
Dj tries to slip under Superfish’s arm but he moves his arm lower, trapping him in place.
“No, I want to talk about this now.”
“Please.”
Superfish holds him there for a few moments and narrows his gaze before dropping his arm. Dj breathes out a sigh of relief and glances back at Superfish apologetically, but the witch avoids his gaze. The two walk to class wordlessly and don’t speak for the rest of the school day.

Later that night, Dj is sulking in his room. The guilt from everything has been building up and now it’s eating him alive. He wonders if just telling Superfish how he feels would be so bad, but there’s no telling how the other will react.
He tries doing anything to take his mind off of the witch. Cooking, studying, hell, he even resorted to doomscrolling. Nothing seemed to work. It was like his brain was a magnet that kept attracting Superfish, no matter how much he didn’t want it to.
Eventually, he comes to the conclusion that he’ll just have to face him tomorrow and talk to him. But what would he even say? And what would he do? There were too many things that could go right or wrong and it was all too risky.
Then again, Dj doesn’t want the gap between them to keep widening. As much as he wants to deny it, he’s gotten attached to Superfish and simply can’t let go of him. His presence alone is enough to make him happy.
“Maybe I should just talk to him…” Dj mumbles.
Whatever happens happens, and he’ll just have to accept it.

The following day Dj has every intention of talking to Superfish about everything, but he finds the witch surrounded by a crowd of girls like usual, but this time he’s soaking up the attention more than he normally would. He doesn’t want to feel this way, but the sight makes Dj unbearably jealous.
He marches into the middle of the crowd like he’s done millions of times and drags Superfish away to a more secluded area.
“We need to talk,” Dj states.
“Oh so now you want to talk? When I get attention from other people, it’s an issue, but when I pay attention to you, you push me away? It confuses me, and I can’t understand you.”
Dj’s gaze softened at his words. He didn’t realize his actions had this much of an impact on Superfish, and he felt horrible. He should’ve taken into account how he would feel about all this.
“I’m sorry. Just let me explain—“
“I’ve been trying to let you explain for the past week.”
“Please—“
“Are you mad at me? Did I do something wrong?”
“I’m in love with you! Okay?“
Superfish’s eyes widen and he goes silent. Dj stands there, breathing uneven. His eyes plead for him to say something, anything.
“…What?”
“I like you so much that it hurts. I…I didn’t want to say anything because I didn’t want to ruin what we have, but I managed to hurt you anyway, and I’m sorry.”
“Oh.”
Dj was going to lose it.
“Oh?! What do you mean ‘oh’—”
Superfish cuts Dj off by leaning in and pressing their lips together for a split second. It takes both of them by surprise but Dj returns the kiss, this time with more passion. His hands found their way to cup the witch’s face, and Superfish had his hands in Dj’s hair. For a moment, everything fades. It’s just then in this moment and no one else, and both of them want to live in it forever.
Eventually they break apart for air, both breathing heavily. Neither of the two speak for a few moments just trying to catch their breath. Dj stared deeply into Superfish’s piercing golden eyes. They were gorgeous, and maybe if he tried hard enough, he could swim in them.
“So…”
“Do you…do you want to be my boyfriend?” Dj asks, not meeting the others gaze.
Superfish smirks. “Since I’m so generous, I’ll let you have the honor of dating me.”
Dj pushes him onto the grass, and he lands with a thud and a small yelp. He looks down at Superfish with his hands on his hips and an annoyed expression on his face.
“So I’ll take that as a ‘yes’?”
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll be your boyfriend or whatever.”
Dj’s expression shifts into a soft smile and he collapses in the grass beside the witch, interlocking their fingers. He pressed a soft kiss to his cheek and sighed contently to the sky.
