Work Text:

Jacob was a dirt-poor farm boy

Raised at the fork in the road in a clapboard house

And Rachel was a land baron's daughter

Born with a silver spoon in her mouth

Alfred was working in the fields when he first saw Arthur Kirkland, the only omega son of Rhys Kirkland. The omega was walking the fields his father owned, and it was a lucky day that he came to patch that Alfred was working. When their eyes met, he felt his heart tug.

      “Hello, I’m Arthur.”

“Alfred Jones, at your service…”  Smiling at the omega.

Arthur blushed and walked away. Though he did come back the next day and had a chat with Alfred, and the day after that, until they were talking and walking for months. Yet even as their love blossomed, someone wanted to destroy it.

Her daddy said he wouldn't stand

For Rachel to waste her life with a common man

He tried hard to keep them apart

But you can't draw lines in a young girl's heart

“Arthur, I heard you have been going out to the fields a lot,” Rhys said, looking at his youngest son.

“Yes,, father.” I smiled; his mind on the alpha smiled.

“I also heard that you have been seeing that Jones boy, one of the hands.”

    “Father…” Arthur started.

“You will not be seeing him again.” Green eyes met younger green eyes.

“Father, please…” Arthur said, tears coming to his eyes.

“That’s my final word; now go to your room!”

Arthur stood up and ran back, tears falling from his eyes.

So late one night by the harvest moon

Jacob climbed a ladder up to Rachel's room

He knew his place, it was right beside her

Step-by-step up to her world

Head over heels for a brown-eyed girl

And gettin' caught didn't seem to matter

'Cause Heaven was waitin' at the top of Jacob's ladder

When Alfred heard that his love was now banned from him, he decided to take his life into his own hands. He found a ladder and found Arthur’s window. Each step brought him closer as he felt himself shake. Soon he was by the window and knocked, and was greeted by the green eyes of his love.

    “Alfred?”

“Open the window, Artie…I’m here to see you.”

Arthur quickly opened the window and helped the alpha in his room. Once Alfred was safe on the floor of Arthur’s bedroom, the alpha turned to the smaller omega. Alfred reached out and pulled Arthur into a kiss.

Alfred pulled away, catching his breath, his eyes looking into hazy green.

“Arthur…I’m going to claim you as mine tonight.”

Arthur shivered but nodded, kissing his alpha again.

The next moring Rhys found his son missing, the omega’s room filled with the scent of the alpha and claiming. On the bed was a note; he read it, growling as he looked over to the open window.

“Very well, Arthur, go with your alpha; you will not be coming back to our home.”

It'll be five years in September

Since her daddy found the ladder and a note on her windowsill

He swore he'd never forgive them

But nothin' melts a heart like a grandchild will

Now she climbs up on his knee

Says, "Grandpa tell a story, the one about me."

He thinks back, and his eyes shine

Says, "Listen, child, once upon a time."

“Grandpa!” the voice of Whitney  Jones filled Rhys Kirkland’s ears.

The head alpha picked up the brown-haired girl, twirling her around before kissing her forehead. The girl was a mixture of both her parents' families; her teal eyes had blues and greens from her parents and dark brown hair, which came from her father’s side. Though her smile was all her mother's, which melted the older alpha since he first met her.

    “Hello, pixie, how are you?”

“Good, mum says I’ll start school soon,” the girl replied.

“Hmm, and are you excited about that?”

“I get to meet more friends, and daddy says it builds character.”

“That’s right, my dear,” he said, sitting down, and she climbed up.

   “Grandpa?”

“Yes, Pixie?” he hummed, kissing his head.

“Can you tell me the story again, the one about me?” she asked, her teal eyes looking into his and gave a gentle smile.

   “Alright, you see….”

Late one night by the harvest moon

Your daddy climbed a ladder to your mama's room

He knew his place, it was right beside her

Step-by-step up to her world

Head over heels for my little girl

And here you are, that's all that matters

'Cause Heaven was waitin' at the top of Jacob's ladder
