Work Text:
"I think—no, I know, I want to live in Khura'in. I want to stay here."
Apollo didn't know what reaction he expected, but he certainly didn't expect a good one.
"Huh. Alright then, so we are breaking up, ja?"
Now that wasn't one of the reactions he expected at all.
He didn't expect Klavier's voice to be this... normal. This calm and collected, the tone he had when he found out a small setback in one of his arguments or realised his favourite coffee shop was closed.
He didn't expect him to immediately think about breaking things off.
Apollo didn't know what he was supposed to say to that.
He could hear Klavier's impatient hum, waiting for a response that Apollo couldn't even find the words to.
"Apollo?" Apollo. Not schatz, just Apollo. "Did you hang up?"
He took a shaky breath before stammering "Y-Yeah. I am. I didn't expect you to immediately jump on breaking up."
Klavier sighed, a sound Apollo was growing to hate, "Well, it was going to happen sooner or later, no? It's what happens with all long distance relationships. One of us starts responding to texts late, missing scheduled calls and just stops responding after a while. Then the latter finally realises that they can never find space in that person's life and calls it quits. It's a tale old as time, nein?" Apollo could hear the clicking of Klavier's favourite pen, something he did when he was annoyed.
Apollo still didn't know what to say, so Klavier continued for him, "Look, I understand the problems with Khura'in's law system. But, Apollo, I don't want this. And I definitely do not need this. I don't want a long distance relationship. I don't want a relationship with someone I won't even get to see in real life. I love you. You are the love of my life, but I cannot wait around for you to come back. I wasted half my life waiting around for people to realise I was always going to be there to come back to me after getting their heart broken from someone else, I don't want to waste the other half doing the same. I need to choose myself, my wants, my needs. I'm sorry. Go, do good things for your hometown, ja? Gute Nacht, mein Liebling."
And with that, Klavier hanged up the phone.
