Past mistakes are just new information these days, I've got expectations

Summary:

“That wasn’t your call to make,” Tyler was barely able to not shift into his other form with how angry he felt.

He couldn’t believe the audacity of Capri who tried to keep Wednesday away from him.

“No but it was Wednesday’s,” Capri told him, taking him by surprise. “As far as she’s concerned after you went your separate ways her business is her own just as your business is yours. Whatever she does isn’t your concern.”

Not his concern?

Was Capri serious? He knew that Wednesday was probably serious since she was the queen of denial but they both should know better.

Everything regarding Wednesday Addams was his concern.

“Well Wednesday is wrong like she is about a lot of things,” Tyler snapped. “You should have told me.”

“Tyler, listen I wanted to and I warned Wednesday that you’ll find out she’s here eventually but you have to think rationally,” Capri pleaded. “The full moon is approaching and you can’t distract her. Not right now.”

“So what I’m just supposed to pretend the girl I’m in love with isn’t here and apparently part werewolf now?,” Tyler scoffed as he turned around to leave. “That's not happening. I’ll just have to get answers for myself.”

Notes:

To be honest writing this story has been a bit of a fever dream. Genuinely it was a struggle writing this from start to finish but I hope you like it!

Please consider leaving comments! I love reading what you guys have to say.

Enjoy!

Chapter 1: The cost

Summary:

Turns out actions have consequences especially when you do a risky ritual and it gets interrupted.

Who would have guessed?

Notes:

The title is lyrics from expectations by Olivia Rodrigo since her new album did genuine psychic damage to me.

While writing this story I had a few songs from it playing on loop for a few of the chapters.

Honestly I think listening to them really enhanced my writing process.

Anyways I hope you guys enjoy the story!

Chapter Text

So as it turns out being body swapped into your werewolf best friend's body when your soul was already damaged and fraying apart at the seams from black tears that was also still weak from being previously resurrected did in fact have consequences.

Which was honestly something that Wednesday should have seen coming.

In her defense though since Wednesday stepped foot inside Nevermore she’s been so busy that she’s barely been able to think about anything that just happened because the next disaster was right around the corner.

It’s like she was never able to catch a break.

It probably didn’t help that there was nobody that ever actually helped her when it came to these things. Usually she went into these things alone with her plans and hoped for the best.

That was when the adults and everybody else would decide it was time to tell her off and judge her. Question her choices and why she did what she did.

Hypocrites all of them.

Wednesday was thrown at problem after problem and was expected to solve them all and when she did that in ways that weren’t conventional and reckless all she got in return was lectures.

People always had something to say about what happened and what she should have done like they had any room to speak.

If they wanted her to act a certain way so badly then they should have just taken her place and taken care of the problems their way instead of making her do it.

Instead of leaving it all to her to fix.

Yet everyone just kept making Wednesday be the one responsible for the fate of literally everyone and everything since apparently that was her role.

She’s been forced to play the part two years in a row now even though she despised it and kept having to deal with the aftermath.

The hero she had been deemed even though weeks prior they called her freak. The savior they all called her even when they had screamed at her and told her that the choices she made were questionable and violent.

Her family and friends looked at her and called her senseless and her actions questionable. The people she should have been able to rely on shook their heads at her and said she was too impulsive.

All of them loved to tell her she had no clue what she had been doing.

Wednesday wanted to kill every single person who kept switching up their options and talking about things they don’t have a right to talk about in the most painful ways possible for their audacity.

She wanted to grab them all by the shoulders and shake them as hard as psychically possible and demand for them to make up their minds already or do her a favor and shut up.

Wednesday was an Addams.

She was what she was and she wasn’t going to change for anyone.

Not for her mother who was blinded by her Dove mentality and criticized her for it. Not the mindless population of Jericho or for any idiotic strangers.

Yet time and time again it was Wednesday who was forced to make difficult choices while the other people who could have helped did nothing. Sure she could have asked them for help but she shouldn’t have to.

It shouldn’t have been up to her as help should have been given to her regardless.

Still more and more the adults kept failing spectacularly and then Wednesday had to scramble to find solutions to fix all the many problems they caused.

They really left a lot of problems and none of them gave her any warning about any of them.

She had to clear her fathers name, kill Crackstone to stop the future genocide of outcasts and avenge her deceased family members, finish solving the LOIS situation, the whole gala scheme, try to save Tyler, the whole ordeal with Isaac and his nutcase sister and then proceeded to have to hunt down Enid stuck in wolf form to save her.

All of those were things forced on her to solve and fix since nobody tried to actually help her.

Wednesday from the moment she entered Nevermore had been alone in all of this. Her parents told her nothing about their history with this school or the bloody history behind her now first ex-spirit guide.

Despite Enid Eugene and then Agnes who helped her along with a small handful of other students like the Nightashades it was mainly just her.

Just her facing the problems that all the adults tried to bury and tried to pretend they were never there in the first place. It was up to her since nobody could handle that kind of pressure and wasn’t up to the task.

Her first year itself was a mess from start to finish.

From bodies dropping left and right, the assination attempts on her life by Rowan, Weems covering up a student's death and then later dying, Tyler manipulating her, the whole Garret situation, Laurel’s whole insane plan, and then dealing with Crackstone.

All things that Wednesday faced head on with no proper help from anyone and with no warning. Not a single person thought to tell her anything useful or even give her just a hint about what was going on.

Of course they didn’t.

Then this following year her parents dropped the ball yet again and she had to deal with yet another one of their messes. That this time could have drained Pugsley dry and killed him and almost did kill her if it wasn’t for Enid saving her.

It could have been avoided or at least her and Pugsley could have been better prepared but no.

No, her and her brother were told nothing despite Thing being her and both of her brothers honorary uncle. His origin was never told to any of them which in the past she had respected.

Still the moment Pugsley was revealed to be a spark with a knack for raising the dead since he was an Addams they should have told them. Should have given them at least some kind of warning.

They didn’t though.

Her parents were another set of people on the list that could have helped Wednesday but failed her. They let her down just like all the others did and they were the ones that knew her the best.

All the other people who failed her in the last two years had misconceptions about her and her parents didn’t even have that excuse.

Weems and the Sheriff turned a blind eye until it was too late for either of them. Weems saw only Morticia in her and judged her for it while the Sheriff only saw Gomez Addams’s daughter and a freak.

Both of them refused to see Wednesday as Wednesday and only saw her as her respective parents.

Though the sheriff leaving the LOIS information redeemed him just a little bit in Wednesday's eyes even though he was an awful father and a mediocre person at best.

Weems on the other hand chose to be her spirit guide and just like Goody had done she offered her no real help whatsoever. She watched as Wednesday struggled and aside from calling her out she did nothing to help her.

Wednesday struggled and struggled trying to make sense of what she was feeling, what to do, and how to save everyone since it was once again up to her to deal with everything while Weems scoffed at her efforts.

Capri who was new to the school was also no help and saw her as an in denial emotionally repressed girl who didn’t know what she was doing.

Instead of helping her try to find a way to save Tyler and restore his sanity as well as finding a way to save Enid’s life Capri instead looked away.

Wednesday's attempt to try to save Tyler from his own demise and at the same time deal with her feelings for him were met with Capri’s disbelief like the women couldn’t believe her.

Like Capri didn’t understand why Wednesday was being so unhinged about all of this after she spent hours brewing and figuring out the formula while Capri sat on her hands and did nothing to help Tyler.

Her mother even judged her. Telling her not to court this monster despite it being Tyler who started this dance between them. Tyler who put her in a coma and then brought her dead flowers and a death threat.

Tyler wasn’t an Addams and he probably didn’t know it but the steps he took could be mistaken for a classic Addams courtship.

Yet somehow according to her mother it was Wednesday who was doing the courting?

Unbelievable.

Then her mother after watching Wednesday strain her body and her ability called her reckless and asked her to not make things worse as if Wednesday wasn’t doing everything in her power to literally fix everything.

Trying to make sure everyone didn’t die and make it through the year in mostly one piece since apparently it was her job to do that now.

Wednesday risked her ability, risked her soul and her sanity, and spent hours on end trying to save essentially everyone she more than tolerated while all the adults and a few others just shook their heads at her.

They saw her try a risky ritual in hopes to save Enid’s life and called her mad. Her mother saw her bleed black tears trying to save Enid and called her foolish for exhausting herself and her ability.

Morticia witnessed Wednesday trying to bind a boy to her, a boy that would have let her and said that Wednesday wasn't thinking straight. That she couldn’t comprehend just what she was doing.

Capri and Weems watched her immediately throw herself into learning a complex formula trying to both tie Tyler to herself and save him and called her impulsive. They saw the church trap and said she was repressed and dealing with it badly.

Maybe they were all right and maybe they all had a point but it didn’t change the fact that Wednesday was doing her best. Was dealing with it all as best she could.

Things thought just kept getting worse as with every problem that she attempted to solve, more just kept popping up. More messes the adults made that were now up to her to clean up.

Nobody stepped in to help her though and instead chose to just watch, waiting to see if she sank or she swam.

Leaving it to Wednesday to save her brother then save Tyler from the hands of his family and from losing his ability and then later on to hunt Enid down who was stuck in her alpha form to later get her help.

Her best friend who was only stuck in her alpha wolf form in the first place because Enid had to dig her up from her makeshift grave that her parents' ex friend that they didn’t warn her or Pugsley about tried to bury her alive in.

Apparently Wednesday was the only one offering to help find and save Enid in the aftermath of that too.

It made her livid how Capri only swooped in after everything was done to help Tyer and whisk him out of town with her to heal, leaving Enid to fend for herself.

Not that it happened that way since Wednesday made a promise and she always keeps her promises. She swore to find Enid no matter what and she accomplished that.

Wednesday made her Uncle Fester help her and together they hunted down Enid. It took weeks of traveling and searching to find her best friend and then days of wrangling her.

Honestly she was a bit proud of how well Enid fought and evaded them in her wolf form. It took skill to avoid not one but two Addams.

After they finally got Enid, Wednesday used her connections as a double heiress and got Enid a spot at a werewolf sanctuary that specifically helped werewolves dealing with issues like this. Where hopefully Enid could recover in peace.

Everything that happened Wednesday did in the span of two years essentially by herself.

Yet they all judged her.

She knew she wasn’t perfect and yes maybe she made more than a few decisions that weren’t the best and possibly made certain situations more complicated but they weren't that many options at hand.

Wednesday did what she could with what she had and luckily for everyone they all lived to tell the tale and instead of thanking her they all just bemoaned how she chose to do it.

It was infuriating.

So needless to say when Wednesday went home after her second year at Nevermore she crashed and she crashed hard being beyond exhausted.

Honestly it felt like she entered another coma but this time a small one as her mind and body demanded that she rest.

At least this time her rest wasn’t interrupted by the meddling useless spirit of Weems who shoved her way into a job she didn’t want and refused to do properly.

No this time Wednesday just rested.

Actually rested with no interruptions, no more people to run around to save, no more messes to clean up that weren’t her own, and no more ways she had to destroy herself to save anyone.

It was nice.

When Wednesday woke up what felt like days later she felt better than she had in months. She eagerly killed both of her brothers in their death games and despite being mad at her mother, helped her with her man-eating garden and later sparred with her father.

It was routine and normal or as normal as it could be with a family like the Addams who were as different as could be and were cursed to never be able to kill another Addams permanently.

Death and darkness lurked around every corner and considering all the stress and forced normalcy that she had been forced to deal with she soaked it all in.

Nothing was better than being home even if her brothers got on her nerves, her mother was still annoyed with her for Lilith only knows what reason, and her father was mourning his old friend again.

Still nothing beats being home.

Unfortunately the world like it loved to do didn’t let her get comfortable and didn’t let her rest for too long. No she wouldn’t be one of its favorite punching bags if it did that would she.

Now Wednesday would like to say on record that she thought she had known all the risks doing that ritual that led to her and Enid swapping bodies in efforts to find a way to save Enid’s life.

She knew it could have killed her, could have ruined her mind and soul, destroyed her ability but to her it would have been worth it.

Despite their rocky start and how they occasionally wanted to strangle each other out of frustration Enid was her best friend which was something that Wednesday never thought she’d have.

So of course Wednesday risked it all for her.

After the body swap had been successfully reversed with both her and Enid as alright as they could be she had assumed that was the end of that.

Which Wednesday should have known better than to jinx that universe like that.

It was the small things at first and it came at the pace of a snail. Slowly appearing in a way that would be barely noticeable if Wednesday wasn’t still on alert from the events of the past year.

The past two years really.

Still as things started to happen to her body and affect her wellbeing as Wednesday noticed more and more changes she simply chalked it up to being side effects of the body swap.

Though she didn’t know why they were appearing now instead of before.

Her hearing was the first thing that changed.

Noises appeared to be louder than before as if her hearing had grown sharper. At first it was her being able to hear clearly from across the room but as time passed she soon began able to hear heartbeats and from rooms over.

Her eyesight was the next.

Now she already had twenty twenty vision, a fact she prided herself on but her sight grew more precise and almost impossibly perfect. There was no detail she couldn’t miss once she got her sights set on something.

Apparently Wednesday could see in the dark now too which she had to admit was quite useful. She also apparently developed tapetum lucidum as well, making her eyes reflect in certain light.

Something she admittedly thought was quite cool.

Though it was a little unnerving how much more intense everything was with her eyes and with her hearing being increased and with her senses dialed up.

Wednesday took days to get used to her gradually increasing hearing and eyesight and let’s just say that her brain did not like all the extra sensory input at first and she had truly awful migraines.

The actually awful kind, not the fun kind that usually came from a lobotomy or from a decapitation.

Her behavior was the next thing that was starting to get affected by what she had at first assumed was leftover traits from the body swap but she had a sneaking suspicion it was something else as well as some of her habits.

How Wednesday felt the need to let no one touch her things since they were hers and felt almost territorial over her bedroom to a new curious degree. She made even more violent traps for intruders for good measure.

Hunting her brothers for sport to kill then was easier as she seemed to be faster and lighter on her feet. Like she was becoming the predator her brothers had always accused her of being.

It seems that her strength, which had already been more than a normal person since Wednesday has been working out via killing her family all her life and fencing since she could walk increased as well.

That was one of the changes Wednesday also didn’t quite mind since it came in handy.

The look on Pubert’s face when she used her newfound strength during a game of hide and hunt was absolutely priceless. Pugsley looked like a fish when he experienced it too.

This experience that seemed like how she once spoke of cocooning and evolving almost literally didn't end there though.

Suddenly her taste buds, much to her despair grew more sensitive and she could no longer eat certain food and started craving more and more meat. The more bloody and raw the better.

Luckily that wasn’t too bad of a symptom of whatever this was and considering how Wednesday’s body definitely needed more nutrients it was probably good for her to get all that extra protein and iron.

The small victory didn’t last as her body kept slowly evolving.

With no warning her sense of smell grew more sensitive and she couldn’t stand being around certain things that she used to love any longer. They burned her nose and made her eyes water.

It almost made her sick how certain people started to smell sometimes. Like each person was their own mini perfume store that was constantly putting out new scents to try.

Wednesday almost vomited when she smelled her parents together one time and honestly that was what started to clue her in that something bigger was definitely happening.

Well that and sometimes it felt like when she got mad that her body felt too small and the skin on her hands felt tight like something was pressing against the surface of each finger wanting to come out.

What she suspected were claws.

Now being in Enid’s body had been a challenge but like the purpose of the body swap punishment had been she had learned how her best friend lived and experienced life.

So with that and from all the knowledge Wednesday had on werewolves she was starting to come to a conclusion that seemed almost insane.

However it wasn’t until Wednesday was in her mothers potions laboratory replacing her starting to dwindle inventory at her mothers request and her hand brushed against something that seared her skin that sealed the deal.

All Wednesday could do was stare blankly at the bundle of wolfsbane that was already in its place among her mothers stock. Which for the record she’s never had a reaction to in her entire life up until now.

It was impossible yet there was too much evidence to deny the outlandish idea she’s come up with.

Now it was important to remember Wednesday was a Raven psychic by blood. Her ability was to have visions showing the past, present and the future.

Another thing to remember was that werewolves were either born from other werewolves or they were bitten and turned. It was impossible to just become a werewolf by temporarily being in a werewolf’s body.

Absolutely impossible.

Though Wednesday had done the impossible time and time again. She literally managed to change fate and save Enid’s life and the life of an Addams that had been at stake despite it being essentially set in stone.

So all she could do was scrub a hand over her face and try to come to terms with the fact that maybe just possibly she might also be a werewolf as well as a Raven.

Still Wednesday even if it disgusted her had hope that maybe it was all just nothing and that she was overthinking it and everything was just lingering traits from the body swap and she was wrong.

That hope started to die a slow but vicious death when the full moon started to approach.

Wednesday had lived as Enid’s roommate for two years now and she knew what her best friend was like during the days leading up to the full moon. Enid usually acted like she was hopped on adrenaline.

Like Enid happened to be a shaken soda eagerly waiting at the chance to be opened so it could violently explode out of the can.

Still it was mostly painless for Enid who only occasionally whined and groaned about body pains and it usually only affected her mood as she waited for the full moon where Enid went with the other shifters to be contained.

Werewolves themselves could only transform under the full moon or under different types of full moon and it said a lot about what wolves emerged during what moons.

It was extremely rare for any short of shifter tied to the lunar cycle to be able to shift without consequences.

Enid being an example of that after the events that led to her getting stuck in her alpha wolf form and the fact she managed to transform fully for the first time during the blood moon. It spoke of her strength and her determination.

Now as the days leading up to the full moon passed and that part of the lunar cycle approached, Wednesday felt almost sick and everything hurt.

Her bones throbbed and ached like they were being squeezed and compressed. All her senses were even more intense and she wanted to brain herself against the nearest wall to make it stop.

Wednesday is fully self aware that she has a habit of repressing her feelings that she doesn’t want and ignoring her thoughts of things she doesn’t want to think about but she stubbornly clung to denial.

She was an Addams and most importantly she was psychic and a Raven at that. There had to be some mistake and she had to be wrong.

That denial started to finally fully die as the full moon crept closer and closer and as whenever she almost lost control over herself she felt her body threaten to change.

Now Wednesday only transformed into a werewolf once in Enid’s body and the experience was indescribable and excruciating. The feeling of Enid’s body turning on her with no warning as it reshaped itself was burned into her mind.

It wasn’t the kind of thing you just forgot easily if you ever forgot it. That kind of thing stuck with you.

With her mind racing and still trying to find ways to either find a way out of this or deny it all Wednesday practically devoured every single book of lycanthropy and literally everything about werewolves in their libraries.

From habits to their origin, how to kill a werewolf, how to tame one, things that parts of a werewolf could be used for, rituals a werewolf could be used for basically she read every single bestiary mentioning them.

Wednesday felt her usual iron clad grip on her mood start to slip as her mind tried to process what was happening and fell short. Her body was waiting for the moment she crossed the line to rip itself apart. To turn into something new.

If this was actually happening the way it seemed to be happening she had to find a way to keep herself stable.

There was no saying what would happen if and it was still an if that she’d been infected by lycanthropy, what would happen if she transformed before the full moon and ended up possibly trapped in that form.

Her track record though when it came to things going sideways and getting worse said it would be without a doubt terrible.

Now this would be the part where in an ideal world that she would go to her parents and ask for help. Tell them what was happening and how it felt like she was losing her grip on herself.

Confess to what she suspected would happen in two days' time when the moon was at its peak.

They didn’t live in an ideal world though.

Her mother definitely still disapproved of her even doing the ritual that led to the body swap in the first place and would no doubt tell her that Morticia told her so.

Morticia had previously told Wednesday to her face that visions weren’t always right and that she was naive for believing what she saw would happen the way it appeared.

Her mother point blank told her that she should do nothing but that wasn’t an option for her and never would be an option.

Wednesday could never just sit back and do nothing when her friends or anyone she tolerated deeply was in danger. That wasn’t who she was.

Morticia would most likely say how she had warned Wednesday again and again that things would get out of hand if she acted on unsure information and sure enough they did.

Proving why Wednesday should have just let nature run its course as her mother told her to let it.

Then Morticia would lecture her on why this was happening in the first place and how it was all because Wednesday didn’t listen and always kept pushing even when she should have stopped.

Her mother would then make her feel like a child and feel stupid like all of this was her fault and not because of a mixture of wild circumstances.

Wednesday knew her mother loved her but right now with her mind scrambling to make sense of things and her body threatening to turn on her she didn’t want to deal with that.

Her father she knew would be eager to help her and knowing him he would spare no expense trying to figure out what was happening and how to help her. He’d probably fuss over her too.

Gomez, if Wednesday told him would be all over this and all over her letting her know in his own over the top way showing much he loved her and cared for her as he supported her.

Her father loved her mother though more than life and death itself and there were no secrets between them. So whatever Gomez knew Morticia would know.

So Wednesday couldn't tell them.

Her brothers were absolutely out of the question as it was her job as the older sister and heiress to deal with her own business. This was her issue to deal with and not theirs.

Besides, Pugsley and Pubert were more skilled at making problems and causing chaos than fixing things.

Lurch knew nothing about this kind of thing, grandmama was out of the house doing who knows what, and Thing though Wednesday still loved him like an uncle despite his unfortunate origin would tattle on her.

Uncle Fester was off on his next adventure and though he’d help her Wednesday already asked a lot of him to find and save Enid. Uncle Fester deserved having fun and taking a break.

Once again Wednesday was by herself and on her own like she usually was.

How surprising.

Though Wednesday didn’t tell anyone what was going on she knew her family saw changes in her behavior and that her routine was different. They noticed how she haunted the libraries and spent more time outside.

She had been hoping that they would leave her alone to deal with this and stay out of her business like they usually did. Buy herself more time to deal with whatever this was until she had a plan.

Then the full moon came, taking her full complete attention before Wednesday could think about and start to dread dealing with that whole experience of her family prying.

Inside the deep dark depths of the forest on their family land under the light of the moon Wednesday changed.

Her bones snapped and cracked under her skin as they grew and repositioned themselves. Her skin seemed to rip and tear as her body began to morph as her clothes tore to shreds. The blood in her veins sang with the thrill of the need to run.

Wednesday like she had in Enid’s body clawed at the ground as her body began to unravel and reshape itself into something new. Something bigger and much deadlier.

Underneath the light of the full moon a large black werewolf with thick saber tooth tusk like fangs and big brown eyes emerged and howled as if warning the world it was there now.

Wednesday for the time being was mindless and helpless to the pull and allure of the full moon as she ran around the family woods hunting and exploring for the rest of the night.

Come morning Wednesday would wake up naked, filthy, covered in prey blood dirt and debris with dead half eaten animals surrounding her on the forest floor.

She could only bury her head in her hands feeling completely and utterly done.

Any hope or denial was long since dead now.

Here comes the next mess that Wednesday definitely had to deal with now but at least this time it was her own mess and not someone else’s.

At least there was that.
