"Okay ladies, smiiiile!" Caroline orders as she takes some pictures for Instagram.
Anne Baxter, your closest girlfriend, and yourself had taken to wearing synthetic wigs for tonight. Most of the women in your social circle had been dyeing their hair blonde. With either disastrous or okay results. With 4C hair, there was no way you were going to take that chance. Anne, another woman of colour thought the same thing. No matter how much Bingley said that you should straighten it and "See how it goes" But when Anne said that she wanted to go blonde, they instantly chose the premium blonde wigs, from a popular seller on Tik Tok.
The only difference was, yours was darker than Anne's. After enlisting a stylist, one of Anne's many acquaintances, you thought they looked pretty good. Until Ten minutes in, when Caroline finally greets you at Baelor's charity event.
"Hmmm.....going for the goldilocks look?" Her large eyes look you up and down.
"It's a dusky mature blonde Miss Bingley. It fits like a fairy tale though" You counter.
"I'm sure" She smirks. "PICTURES GIRLIES!" She randomly calls out.
And now here you are. Awkwardly shuffling to the side as Caroline raises her phone.
"Y/N! She repeats it twice, don't by shy, get in the middle!"
Of course you don't because you are the only black girl in this group, and to your chagrin, you are the biggest and the widest. You can almost smell the other women's pity as you shuffle into the middle. You instantly suck your stomach in and bring Anne and Mary closer towards you.
"That's it Y/N! Smile for insta and Twitter! You would have looked better in a different colour though" Caroline mused.
"I strongly disagree" Mary Bennet squeezes your shoulder.
"Well ladies, no-one should be ashamed of getting a little nip and tuck! Where's the King?" Caroline quickly changes the subject.
You feel better after Mary's comments but that doesn't stop you from waving away hors d'oeuvres and just drinking juice. Which was probably worse because of the sugar. Your husband, Maekar finally catches you near a table of antiques for sale.
"My girl, what's crawled up your arse?" He takes a gulp of his wine.
"A simple how are you, would assuage" You look at your phone for the time.
"I have eyes Y/N, You haven't eaten all night. I ordered those Danish slices for you. No-one else will eat them" Maekar looks at you with a mix of cynicism and curiosity.
You shuffle to a quieter area. "Babe, was this dress a mistake?" You ask.
Maekar's eyes flash with indignation. "Caroline fucking Bingley!"
"But is she right? Do I look like a fat purple grape?" You whisper.
"Compare yourself to a grape my dear. They were good enough for the Greek Gods weren't they?" Maekar playfully nudges you. "Shall I kick her out?"
"No way. Look at her" You look at Caroline in a way that teenagers look at their crush. Maekar follows your glance with a disgusted snort. "She had a Tummy tuck less than a week ago. She looks bloody amazing"
"So do you" Maekar protests.
"Tell that to my stomach flab" You chuckle.
"I like your flab" Maekar casually reaches for a pastry snack. "Let Baelor kick her out? He'd do it you know"
"That would be fun, but no" You pat his arm.
"Eat. Or I will confront her" Maekar warns. "You'll be ill, if you don't have something"
You pick up one of those Danish slices and eat half. You were hungrier than you thought you were. You nod impressed.
Maekar snakes an arm around your waist, lightly pawing at your arse, before he drops his arm. "Good girl" He winks as he walks over to Lord Steffon.
