Chapter Text
16 or so years ago, Ordon was the same, a small village with so few people it was a surprise how it worked, their main produce was their goats and their pumpkins, at the time there was a marriage spree a year after the mayor of the village had a daughter, those where as peaceful of days as they can get.
From deep within Hyrule, or maybe someplace else, the whole region was blessed, with two more heads, in a day of torrential rain, a day that was commonly used to be with their couples, their families and mascots. All while sipping a hot beverage close to the fire of the chimney or the stove, today was different for most if not all of the adults, except for those who lived too far from the mayor’s home all reunited there after the mayor gave a shout that hit everyone like a thunder.
We all joined in his sumo dojo, observing in shock a shivering little girl that held a bundle of clothes, scarfs and blankets, with as much courage and protectiveness as she could muster. She was dressed in what could only be called old rags. She was, or rather she looked somewhat grateful that she was let into a home, but at the same time, the kid looked terrified.
Before the she could say anything, or compose herself it was Uli the first to move, she got on her knees and took the cape or rather, what was left of it and gently removed it, the girl was for a lack of a better term an oddity, her brown hair, mixed with white and to further expand on that she had ears on the top of her head, not at the sides, her ears looked like those of a scared deer, maybe? Well not quite these where sharper, slimmer. In further examination she also owned a long probably white tail, it was hard to tell due to the dirt and mud.
But the oddities where not Uli’s nor anyone focus, it was her shape, she looked sick, and terribly so, but she was shaking, and that meant she could survive, she had strength for something, everyone got moving quickly mayor Bo ordered for everyone to make food, porridge, soup, hot milk, anything that could be easy to eat and digest, those that couldn’t cook left for anything to heat the child up and was more proper than rags
But then something else stopped all movement, if not for the rain, if not for Uli drying up the child, no one would have even dared to breathe. A baby started crying, and Bo’s wife was pale, because the crying wasn’t coming form her own newborn baby, it was coming from the bundle in the kid arms.
Those cries stunned everyone, and the silence was painful to say the least, the seconds passed and they felt eternal. Till someone brave enough cut in “dearie? W-who …” maybe it was Pergie, maybe it was Sera maybe even Uli but if not for that person we would have become statues right there and then.
“L-Link…” the child answered, or whispered, maybe we all imagined it, as the voice was so low it could have been confused for the echo of an old conversation. The child looked terrified at the prospect of anyone taking the baby from her, but at the same time, she knew she was exhausted, she knew she was terrified, she knew she just wanted to lay down, but even then, even with all that, she applied a little pressure on the bundle in her arms.
Uli, the one who managed to get closest to the kid without making her cry, run off or collapse. She talked with a soft and soothing voice “would you allow me to look at Link?” and then she looked in the girl for an answer, it took a moment of the girl doubting before she cautiously accepted the help, giving up her little bundle to Uli. who After receiving it, unwraps the baby boy.
A baby, a Hylian baby, so young and so small, of burned yellow hair, and pointy ears, his cries where soft and sickly. But in comparison to the girl that brought him here, he was almost unnaturally healthy, as if it was a miracle brought on by the goddess themselves, still this just made the 5 year old situation even more complicated, more depressing.
It didn’t took long till the 5 year old started crying asking for Link back and at that point there was no way of getting answers out of her. Not her name, not her real age, not even the relationship she had with the baby, and of course no one wanted to even think about asking her about their parents. So while Uli and Pergie, calmed and feed the girl, Bo’s wife and Sera made sure the baby was fed and slept.
They left link in another room and the girl, was left to sleep in the sumo ring, both because it was hard to get her to sleep and because that room was already hot due to the little fire they made to heat the girl up. The adults, all moved away from the kid, they made sure they were far enough so they could talk or rather whisper without waking up the kid.
“So… is it fair to assume this is not a lost kid, right?” my voice came out awfully thumped, it wasn’t intentional but it was something that most of us where thinking as soon as we saw her, a kid that age doesn’t just “get lost” and for such a long time she ends up looking this rough.
Bo looked at me for a moment before he answered solemnly “lets not make assumptions, we don’t even know the child’s name…” Bo turned to look at the kid and sighed “a kid like that… its an oddity if there was a lost kid like her from the kingdom I would have been informed the day it happened.”
“I should have asked for her name, or where she came from” Uli said with a more depressed tone, no one really blames her for it, but no one comforts her other than a couple of hands on her back, telling her that, its okay.
“we’ll provide the kids with clothes for now” Jaggle interrupted while holding Pergie hand “We can offer some bedding as well” continued Pergie they seemed pleased with the generosity but it was well deserved, after them, Sera offered to provide the children with food and whatever else she sold, Bo looked pleased and me and Uli offered to take care of the kids in the meantime, at the end of the day, I am the guardian of a pacific region and Uli is a maid of all works, so she helps out in the village and has the time to look after a 5 year old.
Bo looked happy with the arrangement nodding with his head “yes, it takes a village to take care of a child. I’ll head to Hyrule tomorrow and look for any information. For now they will be the village kids” everyone seemed to agree to this, there was no harm on taking care of 2 children for a couple of weeks, maybe months, and get them back to their home, sadly tho, it felt like only a couple of worried faced understood real weight and time of this “little” responsibility.
