Work Text:
It was a quiet, sunny Monday morning when Samira felt herself drifting in and out of unconscious. The chirp of a bird from outside the window and the feeling of sunlight against her skin caused her to slowly begin to wake. The arm that had been around her middle before falling asleep returned back to its previous position, this time with a firmer grip. The smell of coffee brewing from the kitchen invaded her nasal passages as the body next to hers finally settled.
She knew she was fully awake when she sensed Jack’s eyes on her. That’s to say, she wasn’t surprised. This was becoming a bit of a common occurrence.
In the few months they had been dating, Samira had begun to notice all the little ways Jack showed love and affection. One of the main ways was with his eyes. On nights when he was off, she would feel him watching her as she recapped her day sitting at the counter while he cooked dinner. Other times when she would be getting ready or sitting at her laptop pouring over her research, she felt him looking at her out of the corner of her eye. Even on the occasions when their shifts would overlap, she would find his eyes across the ED already waiting for hers. And then there were the rare, lazy mornings, like today, when both of them were off and they could lay in bed for a couple of hours. When she opened her eyes she was always met with the slightly dilated, hazel of his.
All of this had led her to the conclusion that Jack had a bit of a staring problem. She had never called him out on it until now.
She peeked one eye open to meet his. “You’re doing it again.”
“Doing what?” He said, acting like he was unaware of his quickly formed habit.
This made her fully open both eyes to give him her no nonsense look. “You’re staring at me.”
“No I’m not.”
“Yes, you are. You do it all the time.” She laughed.
Finally knowing he had been caught, Jack smiled and decided to admit the truth. “Okay, maybe I have the tendency to let my eyes rest a little longer when I look at you.”
“Just me?” She asked, already knowing the answer.
“Yes, Samira. Just you.”
“Well, I think we may have to do something about that Abbot. It’s becoming a bit of a problem.” She said teasingly.
This caused him to let out a laugh, making the crinkle around his eyes more prominent. “We do? Come on. Don’t act like you don’t love it.”
And that’s the thing, she does. She loves it and him so much, more than she thought was possible. No one has ever looked at her the way he does. He looks at her like he was doing it with all the warmth one person could muster. Like she hung the moon and the stars. Like he wanted to know every thought that crossed her mind. Like he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Like he never wanted to stop.
She wouldn’t lie and say it didn’t scare her, make her nervous, feel exposed, or that it triggered the small part in the back of her brain that was afraid that she could mess it all up at anytime. But she also wouldn’t lie and say that it didn’t excite her. How it makes her feel beautiful, loved, adored, capable of anything. How it makes her feel truly seen for the first time ever. How she never wants him to stop.
She wants to cry, scream and kiss him all at once so she settles for the last. Her lips are
immediately met with the fervor of his. Samira knew if there was any way to get Jack to break his stare it would be this, him using his lips to show the same passion that poured through his eyes. Problem solved, at least for now.
After a minute or so, she breaks their kiss and looks back up at Jack, his eyes already melting into hers. Brown looking into hazel, she realizes maybe it’s not a problem after all. Maybe she could use it to her advantage. Two could play this game. “Stare all you want but just so you know I’m going to do it back.”
The flush she has grown to know all too well breaks out across his cheeks and neck. Samira loves that it’s because of her. “Whatever you want honey.”
And there it is, the look that makes her feel everything and more.
