Work Text:

The universe, Luca Marini had decided, was a cruel artist. It had sculpted him perfectly, given him a smile that could charm anyone, eyes blue and icy in their clarity, but never cold, and then, as a joke, given him a brother, who turned out to be Valentino Rossi. But that was okay. He had come to terms with this quirk.

The real tragedy, the one that was currently rendering him a hollow shell of a man, was the haircut.

It had happened few weeks ago. Weeks of catching his reflection in windows and feeling his soul leave his body.

Marta had mentioned she was going to her stylist. "Come with me," she'd said. "You look like a sheepdog. A very handsome sheepdog, but still."

Luca, foolishly, had agreed. He'd sat in the chair, scrolling through his phone, barely paying attention as the stylist asked what he wanted. " A little trim," he'd said absently. "Just clean it up."

What he meant was: preserve my beautiful, flowing, angelic locks. What the stylist had heard was: give me the helmet head special, like I wasn't going to wear one to the next race. Go and ruin everything soft and beautiful about me.

When they'd spun him around to face the mirror, he'd actually chuckled. A small, undignified sound that escaped before he could stop it. His chestnut waves - the ones that framed his face like he was a painting, the ones that fell across his forehead in that effortlessly perfect way, the ones that Alex loved to tuck behind his ears when they were lying in bed together - were gone. In their place was a catastrophe.

It wasn't just a trim. It was a massacre.

Marta had tried to be supportive, but he could see the pity in her eyes. Afterward, his mechanics exchanged glances that screamed "We will never speak of this." Even his own mother had, upon seeing him on a video call, said, "Oh, tesoro, did you lose a bet?" His shame was eternal. He was hiding in a motorhome half the time.

But the worst had been Alex.

The first time Alex had seen the new haircut, he'd blinked. And blinked again.

"Oh," Alex had said, his voice carefully neutral. "You... cut it."

Luca had wanted to cry. "It's terrible, isn't it? I look ridiculous. I look like-"

"Were you attacked?" Alex had said, and then immediately slapped a hand over his mouth. "I'm sorry. I'm sorry. That was mean."

"It's not mean if it's true," Luca had sniffled. "It's a disaster. They are gone. I'm never going to recover from this."

Alex had tried to comfort him, but Luca could see the effort it took to keep a straight face. The little twitch at the corner of his mouth and the way his eyes kept flicking back to Luca's hair like he couldn't quite believe it.

"It'll grow back," Alex had said.

"Easy for you to say," Luca had grumbled.

"I'm sure yours will be beautiful again."

But after Catalonia, a more important problem arose.

The hospital had been a blur of antiseptic smell and fluorescent lights and the worst hours of Luca's life. He'd gotten there somehow; he didn't really remember, but he remembered the waiting room. Minutes stretching into hours.

Alex had been pale against the white sheets, his face bruised, but he was awake. And when he'd seen Luca, he'd smiled - that crooked, exhausted, beautiful smile - and said, "You look terrible."

Luca had broken down completely. He'd cried into Alex's shoulder for what felt like hours, clinging to him like he might disappear if Luca let go. And Alex had held him, one hand stroking his head (still disastrously short hair, but Alex didn't seem to care), murmuring reassurances.

"I'm okay," Alex had said. "I'm okay. I'm not going anywhere."

"You crashed," Luca had sobbed.

"I know. I know. But I'm here. I'm right here."

The days that followed had been a strange, suspended kind of time. Luca slept in the hospital chair, then on Alex's couch, and finally in Alex's bed when Alex was released. He made sure Alex took his medication. He helped him with his physical therapy. He held his hand during the nightmares, the ones where Alex relived the crash and woke up gasping. Luca had run his fingers through his hair countless times, soothing Alex to sleep, comforting himself. It had become a ritual. When everything else felt uncertain, like Luca's seat next season or how quickly Alex would recover, it allowed him to ground himself.

"You're obsessed with my hair," Alex had teased one night, half-asleep against Luca's chest.

"I'm obsessed with you," Luca had corrected. "Everything else is just a bonus."

Alex had laughed, soft and sleepy, and Luca had pressed a kiss to the top of his head. The bandages were gone by then, just fading bruises and the promise of healing.

And then, a few days later, Alex had agreed to film a commercial at his house: light work, nothing too strenuous, just enough to keep him busy while he recovered. The media team had set up at his house, and Luca wanted to hover protectively, but Alex himself had gently suggested taking a walk.

"Just a few hours, Luca."

Luca had reluctantly agreed. He'd kissed Alex goodbye - soft, lingering, I'll be back soon - and gone for a walk to give them space. Just a few hours away from Alex.

Luca was sitting in a café near Alex's house, scrolling through social media. The lock screen of his phone lit up with a photo of Alex, one of his favorites, from a few months ago. Alex was mid-laugh, his messy hair was catching the sun. While he waited, when he saw it.

A photo of Alex, posted by the media team's official account. A behind-the-scenes shot, clearly meant to build anticipation for the commercial. Alex was laughing at something, his face open and happy. And his hair. His hair.

It was shorter. Cropped close on the sides, shorter on top, a dramatic departure from the soft, messy waves Luca had fallen in love with. It wasn't gone, not completely, but it was different. Alex had cut it.

He scrolled through the rest of the photos, each one worse than the last. Alex with his new cut. Alex looking fine, looking happy, looking like he hadn't just committed a crime against the world and Luca in particular.

Luca stared at the screen, his heart pounding. Alex’s face as handsome as ever, his eyes bright and happy. But the top of his head…  For one horrible second, he thought: did Alex do this on purpose?

Because Luca had gone first. Everyone had told him how much they missed his curls. Everyone had said he looked strange, like a scarecrow, like he'd made a terrible mistake. And Alex had seen all of that. He had watched him mourn his lost waves for weeks.

So why would Alex - why would he - follow that example? Unless he was trying to prove something?

It wasn't like Alex at all.

Luca's thumbs flew over the screen, typing a frantic, heartbroken message. "Alex. My love. My sun and stars. What have you done?" He hit send, then immediately followed it up with a string of crying emojis, a skull emoji, and a broken heart.

His phone buzzed. A message from Alex.

"Luca! You will not believe it! Just went for it and had a haircut!"

The walk back to Alex's house was interminable. He rehearsed what he was going to say, but it would all be too accusatory or pathetic. He settled on: "I'm going to scream."

Alex opened the door before Luca could even knock. He was beaming in an oversized hoodie that made him look even younger than he was.

"Luca! You're back early!" Alex pulled him into a careful, one-armed hug and Luca found himself clinging on like a drowning man.

And then he pulled back. And he saw the way new hair changed Alex's whole face.

Luca's hand reached out, trembling, and hovered over Alex's hair. His voice cracked. "Alex. Why."

Alex's smile faltered. "I... I've been wanting to for a while, actually. Since the crash. I just... I wanted a fresh start. Something new." He reached up, touching his own hair self-consciously. "I know it's different. But I like it. I feel... lighter."

"You feel lighter?" Luca's voice was climbing into a higher register. "I spent weeks touching your hair! It was the only thing keeping me sane! When you were in the hospital, when you were recovering, when I was terrified you were going to-" He broke off, swallowing hard. "And now you just- you just cut it off?"

Alex's expression had gone soft, the teasing light fading into something more tender. "Luca," he said quietly. "I didn't know you felt that way."

"Of course I felt that way!" Luca's voice cracked. "And now your hair is different, and I-" He stopped. "I almost lost you. And now I've lost this too."

"Luca? You okay?" Alex’s smile faltered.

"No," Luca whispered, his voice cracking. "I'm not okay. I've already lost my own hair, and now I've lost yours too. I can't… I can't handle it." He was being dramatic. He knew he was being dramatic. But the words were suddenly tied to a knot of fear and love and relief that had been lodged in his throat for weeks.

Alex’s expression softened. "Luca, it's just hair. It'll grow back. Like yours." He said it with a genuine, earnest gentleness, and it made Luca’s heartache even more.

Alex reached up, cupping Luca's face. His thumb slid over the heated skin. "Hey," he said softly. "Look at me."

Luca reluctantly dragged his gaze up from Alex's hair to meet his eyes. They were warm, steady, and full of love.

"It's just hair," Alex said, but his voice was gentle. "It's just hair."

Luca sniffled. "But you did it without telling me. Without warning. I saw it on social media. I found out with everyone else."

Alex winced. "Okay, that's fair. I'm sorry. I should have told you." He paused, his fingers still resting on Luca's cheek. "I've been thinking about it for weeks, Luca. Ever since the crash. I wanted to do something for myself. Something that felt like a new beginning. This was something I could control. And when I saw you cut yours-" He hesitated. "I know you think it's a disaster. I know you hate it. But seeing you do it, it gave me the push I needed."

Luca stared at him. "You did it because of me?" He thought for a few seconds. "Your hair," Luca said slowly. "It... it actually suits you."

Alex's face lit up. "Really?"

"It's not fair," Luca grumbled. "I went first. I took the risk. And you just- you just walk in and get a new haircut, and it makes you look good." He crossed his arms, pouting. "It's not fair."

Luca felt his cheeks flush. "I didn't help you. I just made a terrible decision, and you made a good one."

"You helped," Alex insisted.

Luca sniffled. "But I can't even run my fingers through it now. I'll get a splinter."

A real laugh, warm and genuine, burst from Alex. "Don't be ridiculous. It's soft. It's just very short." He pressed a kiss to Luca's forehead. "And I like yours. Even when you're a hedgehog."

Luca huffed. "You look nice. You look..." He reached up, touching the shorter strands of Alex's hair. They were soft, still soft, just different. "You look good. I hate it."

Alex grinned. "You love it."

"I hate it," Luca repeated, but he was smiling now. "I hate that you did it without telling me. I hate that you look good. I hate that I look like a disaster and you look like a magazine cover."

"You don't look like a disaster," Alex said. "You look like a very cute hedgehog."

Luca groaned. "Shut up."

"Never."

Luca turned away and caught their reflection in the mirror on the wall and stopped dead. He looked at himself properly for the first time in days. Three weeks later, it still looked like somebody else's head attached to his body. Beside him, Alex looked annoyingly good. Alex's hair was short, yes, but it was still there.

Luca's only saving grace, though, was his eyes. They looked brighter somehow, bluer, more striking against the harsh lines of his face. Like the haircut had stripped everything else away and left only the clarity of his gaze. Unfortunately, his eyes were attached to the rest of him.

He couldn't bear it. He turned away from the mirror, his stomach twisting. This is what Alex sees? He was so lost in his own misery that he didn't listen to Alex speaking until warm hands settled on his face. Alex peered past him into the mirror, studying their reflections. Then he rested his chin on Luca's shoulder, his arms wrapping around Luca's waist.

Compared to Luca, Alex's short hair didn't seem like a problem at all.

"There he is," Alex said.

"Who?"

"The man I keep telling you is handsome."

Luca rolled his eyes, but smiled.

They ended up on the couch, takeout containers scattered across the coffee table. Alex had ordered from their favorite place - the one that did the really good pasta and the even better tiramisu. They were eating straight from the containers like the absolute disasters they were.

"This is good," Luca said, twirling pasta around his fork. "I needed this."

"I know." Alex was curled up against his side, his head resting on Luca's chest.

Luca looked down at him. The shorter hair was still strange; still not what he was used to, but Alex looked happy. Relaxed.

"You really like it?" Luca asked quietly. "Your hair?"

Alex nodded, his eyes drifting closed. "It's just hair. But after everything, I just wanted to feel like I wasn't stuck in that moment anymore."

Luca set down his fork and reached over, running his fingers through Alex's shorter strands. It was different, but not bad.

"I understand," he said softly. "I wish you'd told me. I would have been supportive. Eventually."

Alex laughed, his breath warm against Luca's chest. "You would have cried for three days and then agreed."

"But still agreed," Luca said firmly.

"Of course." Alex tilted his head up, smiling. "I love you, you know. Even when you're dramatic."

"I love you too," Luca said. "Even when you're more handsome than me."

"Jealous?"

"Sort of."

Later, after they'd finished eating and the takeout containers were pushed aside, they stayed on the couch. Alex was tucked into Luca's side, Luca's fingers still absently playing with the shorter strands of his hair.

"It'll grow back," Alex murmured, half-asleep.

"I know."

"And yours will too."

"I know."

"And even if it doesn't-" Alex's voice was getting sleepier. "I'll still love you. Even if you remain like this forever."

Luca pressed a kiss to the top of his head. He laughed, soft and warm. "Go to sleep, Alex."

"Don't tell me what to do."

"Go to sleep, please."

Alex huffed but settled deeper against him. "Fine." Alex blew him a kiss. "I love you, my little hedgehog."

Luca ran a hand over his own bristly head. It felt prickly and strange. He supposed he'd just have to get used to it. He smiled down at him, at this ridiculous, wonderful man in his arms. The hair was shorter. The bruises were fading. Everything was different.

Luca smiled. The universe was still cruel. But it had, at the very least, given him beautiful and beloved Alex Marquez. And for now, that was more than enough.
