Chapter Text
Jane felt like a failure.
How could she ever live up to her mother, the Great Fairy Godmother. She heard stories of how her mother casted protection over all the hero’s that helped fight against the villains who tried to take over.
The world looked at her mother like she was hope-
The world looked at Jane like she was meant to do more.
The thing was, Jane could barely cast a spell, every time she tried, sparks just flew out and then nothing.
She couldn’t turn a pumpkin into a carriage, or mice into horses, or protect her aunt’s home from outside invaders, she couldn’t do anything.
Her mother encouraged her but it all felt fake, like she was disappointed in her daughter for being unable to cast a spell properly.
It was awful.
What kind of fae can’t do basic magic?
Jane wished that she was like her mother, magic seemed to come so easy to her, not to mention all of Auradon.
The brown haired 9 year old sat at a lake at her Aunt Cinderella’s palace, trying but falling to pick a rock up that sat next to her.
Near her she can hear the mice, Jaq and Gus arguing about… something while the blue birds chirped away, grabbing strawberries from the bushes nearby.
Jane wonders if Aunt Ella needs them for anything or if they are just gathering them for a surprise.
The animals always have loved surprising Jane with a treat, Aunt Ella says that they love having her over.
But even that thought didn’t help her mood, out of frustration Jane picked up the rock she was using and threw it into the water, watching it skip a few times before sinking into the water.
”What are you doing?” A voice behind Jane suddenly says making Jane jump in the air. She whirls around, coming face to face with her basically cousin, Chad Charming.
The two weren’t related by blood but their mothers were really good friends and so the two practically grew up together.
”I’m just sitting here,” Jane quietly says, pulling her legs closer to her.
Chad didn’t respond, he just sits next to Jane. Glancing at the boy, Jane could see how upset he was, his blond hair with blue highlights didn’t seem to be curly today.
Normally Chad’s hair was curly, but lately Chad has been trying to style and straighten his hair.
Jane didn’t understand why, she liked his natural hair style.
”Well mom was looking for you, she wanted to tell you that your mom can’t pick you up today,” Chad tells her, leaning back on her hands.
Jane wasn’t surprised, her mom was supposed to meet with Queen Belle and King Beast today, usually those meetings run long.
And when those three meet, Jane usually spends a few days with Aunt Ella.
“Okay,” Jane whispers, placing her head on her knees, arms wrapped around her legs.
”Ugh, are you going to sit here all day,” Chad complains. “Let’s do something, my dad got me a new sword, want to see me break it in?”
”Not today, Chad,” Jane mumbles into her legs. “I really just want to be left alone.”
Chad huffs, clearly irritated which made Jane worry that he will hate her.
She really didn’t want her only friend to hate her, he was all she had. Especially because no one else wanted to be friends with the failure fae.
”Why are you so upset?” Chad asks, giving Jane a look that said, she better talk.
Jane couldn’t help but chuckle at that look, it always helped Jane know that he really cared even when he acted so annoyed with her.
”I tried to do a simple spell and it didn’t work,” Jane tells Chad, she wouldn’t normally tell others how she failed, afraid they will make fun of her or look at her in disappointment but Chad was different.
He was her best friend, he normally listened when Jane had a problem just like how she would listen to him.
”What spell?” Chad asks, looking at Jane, staring at her as if daring her to lie. He was always good at drawing the truth out of her, probably because he didn’t understand magic.
”I was trying to do a basic levitation spell but I couldn’t lift the book at all,” Jane whines, quietly.
”Why don’t you just pick up and move the book like you did with the rock before I got here?” Chad looks at Jane confused which actually helped make Jane laugh slightly again.
”Because I’m trying to learn and control my magic,” Jane explains, once more looking upset. “But there isn’t anything to control.”
”Why don’t you use your mom’s wand?” Chad asks, looking genuinely confused. “Doesn’t that help her focus her magic, I remember mom saying that once.”
”My mom’s wand is the most powerful piece of magic we have in Auradon,” Jane shakes her head. “It’s in the museum, I would be lucky to even get a glimpse of it.”
“Then why not get your own wand?” Chad asks, not looking at all like he gets it which is fair.
Though it wasn’t outlawed, magic had become less and less used as this new technology began to spread across the lands. It wasn’t surprising how fast technology began to spread, many citizens of Auradon hate magic and most don’t use it often but as a fae, it was her right to learn so her mom and Aunt Ella decided to still train Jane.
After all a fae who never learns to control their power is dangerous.
Jane is sure however that if she never learns, there will be no consequences since her magic didn’t seem to want to work at all.
Chad of course didn’t care much for magic, he much preferred the art of sword fighting, like his father.
That didn’t mean he wasn’t willing to listen to Jane as she tried to explain, he was a good friend like that.
“A wand is the extension of a person’s magic, you can use a training want to help you but those are rare.” Jane shakes. Her head, sadness could be heard through her voice. “But wands like my mother’s are made from the fairy’s own magic, finding a wand is not a possibility and I won’t ever get a wand if I can’t do basic spells.”
”Then why do you need one?” Chad asks, playing with the grass beside him, it was clear he didn’t know what to say so he was trying to just some up with something.
”Because everyone is expecting me to be the next Fairy Godmother,” Jane frowns. “I can’t be that though if I can’t do the most basic of magic.”
The two sat there for a moment, silently tears began to fall down Jane’s face. She didn’t understand what she was doing wrong, magic should come easy to her, she was a fae after all, magic was apart of fae’s unlike humans so why can’t she get this?
”I don’t think you have to be like your mother,” Chad whispers.
Jane looks over at him, confused.
”What?”
”I don’t think you have to be like your mother,” Chad says again, this time looking more determined. “So what if she can do all that awesome stuff with magic and helped my mom and dad get together, magic is so overrated, all the things she did we can do with our phones.”
”Chad… magic use to be used for everything,” Jane explains, slowly as if she was talking to a toddler and not a kid who was older than her.
”I know that,” Chad huffs, clearly irritated. Jane was worried she said the wrong thing and he would storm off but luckily he didn’t.
Instead Chad just looked at her like she should be understanding what he is saying.
”I’m saying you can still practice if you want but there is no need to actually be able to do magic, no one needs it anymore so there shouldn’t be pressure on you,” Chad explains.
Jane stares at him, she never heard him say anything like that before.
Normally he didn’t really understand anything going on around him or social situations. He would just say something dumb and act like it was the smartest thing said in the history of forever.
”Maybe, but I still want to get a hang of my magic,” Jane tells Chad, turning to face him as she sits on her knees, facing Chad.
”Well then do it because it’s fun since you don’t need to have it,” Chad huffs, standing up and reaching out to Jane.
At first she thought he was going to offer her a hand but instead he grabs her wrist and pulls her up, which made Jane almost fall over.
”Now come on! I think the animals are making us something and I want to try it as soon as it’s ready,” Chad says, pointing at the birds who are now flying inside with a basket.
Jane sighs, maybe it was best to take a break for a bit. Just try and calm herself down before she attempts the levitation spell again.
Besides animals make some of the best food.
Chad pulls Jane along inside and the two make their way towards the kitchen, Chad talking her ear off about the new sword his father gave him.
Jane nods along, not particularly caring about any of that but happy that Chad was excited.
Maybe after they eat, Jane can actually do the spell.
