Chapter Text
Egg rests against his couch. With a blanket resting on shoulders and a mug of coffee in hand, he changes the channel to some popular TV host he’s never cared about until tonight.
He’s talking to the crowd, getting them hyped up for who he’s about to interview.
Gambit, one of the most popular models despite only starting out two years ago. He’s shown up on multiple magazines, fashion shows and ads.
Frankly, he’s the reason Egg fully committed to majoring in photography, taking his hobby more seriously and trying to build an actual career out of it. One could say that Gambit was his muse, even if it sounded parasocial.
But stumbling upon Gambit when he first started out, watching him grow as a model and Egg in turn developing his photography skills.
Egg can’t help but dream about doing a shoot with Gambit. No matter how unrealistic that is.
His online friend would tell him that, lightly tease him with a fond tone. If his friend, Wemmbu, was obsessed with PVP then Egg was obsessed with photography and a certain model.
Wemmbu had heard everything new about Gambit and saw Egg grow as a photographer. Every time Egg complained about Lightroom or just needed someone to listen to him as he talked about a client, Wemmbu was always there to listen either on call or a text on Discord.
Throughout the two years, neither of the two have shown their faces, but that was fine with Egg. He didn’t need to know what Wemmbu looked like, all he cared about was being able to talk to his friend whenever he was free from his college work.
So of course, when Egg saw on Twitter that Gambit was doing his first interview since debuting as a model, Egg flooded Wemmbu’s DMs with how excited he was. How it was a monumental moment and Egg was going to celebrate this day for years to come.
Wemmbu hadn’t replied for a few hours, but when he did it was just a simple message of “lmao” before he changed the subject.
And now the day has come where Egg can hear Gambit's thoughts about his modeling career. So when the host finally announces Gambit and the model walks on stage, Egg totally does not squeal and lean forward from the couch, head wings fluttering in excitement. Because he is a respectable person and doesn’t fanboy about a fashion model.
Gambit looks how Egg’s always seen him, if only dressed more casually. His horns are polished and long, protruding from the top of his head, his long purple hair in a high ponytail swings behind him as he walks. His purple skin is covered by even more purple clothes and Egg wonders if it’s actually his favorite color or if he’s trying to stay on brand.
He doesn’t even wave to the cheering crowd, only immediately sits down on the couch, tail curling around one of his legs. Egg notices his eyes shift from person to person, a small smile on his face.
“Welcome in, Gambit!” The host, some blonde blue-eyed British guy exclaims. “I heard you denied all other interviews for years, so I know you’re about to make me money tonight.” He laughs out, hand banging on his desk.
“D’alright buddy.” Gambit drawls out, his smile growing into a smirk.
And when Gambit says that, Egg freezes in his seat. Because it sounds awfully familiar. The voice and the phrase, both are something he’s heard multiple times.
Surely not, he thinks to himself. He has to watch more, to be completely sure.
“What made you want to come on today?” The host questions.
Gambit shrugs, “Eh, just felt like it. I also got some motivation from a friend.”
“Oh a friend you say?” The host leans forward, immediately intrigued.
“Yea, he’s pretty interested in my work, always talking about it.” Wemmbu smiles softly, and dare Egg says, fondly.
No way, Egg thinks, clutching the blanket on his lap.
“She must be pretty special if she’s encouraged you that much.” The host’s tone is teasing, a smile on his face.
“She?” Gambit laughs, “Nah dude, it’s my homeboy that really wanted me on here. Been cheering me on since I started.”
Egg stands up abruptly, mug falling to the floor with a crash. His socks get soaked but that’s the least of his concerns at the moment.
Because that’s Wemmbu.
The same guy he’s been playing Minecraft with for years now.
Gambit is Wemmbu.
Oh my God. I’ve been gushing about him practically every time we talk to each other. He’s gonna think I’m a fan.
He needs to move. He needs to get rid of any record of him on the Earth, fake his death, maybe start taking up fishing on some remote island.
“Oh, my bad mate,” The host laughs, reeling back in his chair, “Just thought I could get some fresh scoop from one of the best models of what could possibly be the century.”
“The best? Definitely at this time but there are other talented models,” Wemmbu laughs, shaking his head, “But I do have something that’ll make your views go up even more.”
The host leans in again, eyebrow raising intrigue written on his face, “Oh? So you do have a lady at home.”
“Nah bro, I’m quitting.” Wemmbu’s voice echoes through the TV and Egg’s apartment. The host kinda lets out a small incredulous laugh.
What.
Egg stares at the screen, dumbfounded.
“Uh mate, it’s not April Fools.” Tommy’s head cocks to the side, looking at Wemmbu with humor and confusion.
“Cuz I’m not joking?” Wemmbu states confusedly, his tail swinging from side to side, “Like, once I leave this place I’m not doing any more modeling. Aside from my friend, that’s the only reason I agreed to this interview.”
Wait.
“To… announce that you're quitting from being a model?” The host seems equally dumbfounded. The crowd behind the camera quietly talks and gasps can be heard.
“Yea I’m going to be uploading a Google doc, it’s about twenty pages right now.” Wemmbu smiles broadly, as if he didn’t just drop news that practically ruined Egg’s life.
Wow, he thinks faintly, I’m such a chud if this is affecting me this much.
“Mate, are you trying to cancel your modeling company?” The host laughs.
“Why else would I be releasing a Google doc.” Wemmbu states, serious in both tone and face.
The host laughs nervously, clearing his throat and flipping through some cards on his desk.
“Well…” The host looks at the camera, before a big smile takes over his face, “We still have time before you leave! Let’s get some questions and activities done then-”
“Uhh, yea no thanks.” Wemmbu cuts through his sentence.
“Huh?”
“Y’know I’m not really feeling it and I did just quit so I think I can just-” Wemmbu stands up looking around, “Do I just leave where I came from or…? I’ve never really watched your show before.”
“Oh uh, yea mate you can just… it’s over there.” The host waves his hand, in the same direction Wemmbu came from.
“Oh sweet, thanks bro,” Wemmbu begins to walk off stage, right before he goes past the curtains he turns around, “And you’re welcome for all the views you just got, I just know this shit is about to get you millions.”
And then Wemmbu is officially gone from the interview, no proper good bye. Hell he didn’t even give a proper interview. Egg’s eye twitches faintly at the reminder.
“Oh shit he’s right.” The host mumbles quietly, “Well ladies and gentlemen!”
Egg shuts the TV off, not caring about it anymore.
He slumps back down onto his couch, staring at his ceiling.
Egg’s online friend is fashion model Gambit.
Who had just quit being a model on live television.
Frankly if he got on the interview for Egg, he might as well have done an actual interview and then made the announcement because Wemmbu knew damn well that’s the only reason he was looking forward to it.
He was going to slime Wemmbu out in game the next time they play. Damn the fact that Egg can only really win when they play stupid game modes, he’ll find some way to do it.
In a flurry of anger, he grabs his phone from the coffee table and opens Discord. He knows he can never truly be angry at Wemmbu, but his friend doesn’t know that.
Eggchan: Bro.
Eggchan: There is no way you did that
Eggchan: The audacity to get on there in the first place
Eggchan: I’m going to slime you out
He doesn’t expect Wemmbu to reply immediately, probably busy doing other stuff after making that announcement. And wow, it just clicked to him why Wemmbu was always so busy despite him stating he was a business major.
Egg feels slightly better now, getting down from the high of witnessing whatever happened. With that came the realization that his socks are still thoroughly wet from the coffee and the shattered glass that is lying beside his feet.
He winces, standing up with a wet squelch resounding through the living room.
It’s after he cleans up the glass and coffee off the floor and puts on a new pair of dried socks that he receives a reply from Wemmbu.
Wemmy: (✿◠‿◠)
Yeah, nevermind sliming him out in game. He’s going to find where he lives and slime him out in the street.
