Summary
Dr. Bernice Jacobs is an immunologist, an exorcist of complex and often invisible disorders of the immune system with microscopic and molecular magics. But when her good friend and part-time lover's work draws her into a potential catastrophe unfolding just half an hour away from her home, DC, Jacobs finds herself working against red-tape, panic, time pressure, and... new needs.

This is a work of fiction based on Richard Preston's 1994 nonfiction book, The Hot Zone, which details the brief 1989 outbreak of the Reston variant of ebolavirus in a batch of research animals in a DC suburb. It is also an exploration of an alternative inception of omegaverse designations and physiology. Not an evolutionary origin, but a contagious one.
In addition to Preston's book, I had a lot of fun pulling in different perspectives on queer history, the DC nightlife, and consulted people I was able to meet who had been in the vicinity of, and in one case grown up surrounded by, the more recent mid 2010s outbreak of ebolavirus in West Africa.
