Kirby's Return to Murderland

Summary:

They slowly make their way down into the basement, a musty smell getting worse as they go. The room they find themselves in is nearly a mirror image of the upstairs, only much damper and with a slight smell of ... Iron? There’s a lump covered by a tarp in the corner and the closer they get the more metallic the air tastes

Adriel, Akira, and Sumire get themselves into a much worse situation than they could have imagined

Notes:

This was originally written for a short story assignment in my college creative writing class. I earned a 90% on it but I hope you enjoy it a bit more than my professor did.

Work Text:

Adriel sits at her dining room table surrounded by her bestest of friends, everyone dressed to the nines. To one side, sits Midna, her long fiery red hair complemented well by her midnight blue, floor-length dress sitting on her seafoam blue skin. Next to her is her girlfriend Peach wearing a pink, sparkly mini dress, her blond hair up in a messy bun. Alongside her is Zelda in a flowy dark purple dress with her blond hair pulled back into a pollyana. Her boyfriend, Link, has his arm around her and is dressed in a deep green suit, his dirty-blond hair actually brushed out for once. Sumire sits next to him; her deep red hair swept up into a slick back bun with a red bow. She wears a black dress with a gold rose pattern scattered across it. Finally, Akira, Adriel’s boyfriend, sit to her other side with a flashy black suit with gold buttons, his black hair as messy as ever. Adriel herself is dressed in a burgundy halter neck dress, her curly brown hair, short and bouncy.

“Let’s not Adriel this into a worse situation than it already is.” Zelda says giggling.

Adriel stares at her, “I’m sorry, Did you just use my name as a verb?” Laughter erupts around the table as Adriel’s phone vibrates, shaking her glass of water a little bit. She picks it up and sees that she has a text message notification. As she clicks the notification, she sees it's from an unknown number. The message reads, “It’s all your fault.” Another one comes through, “Like the dwarves of Moria, you dug too greedily and too deep into the truth.” Adriel stares at it, confusion running through her brain before Peach’s voice wakes her from her stupor.

“Isn’t that a lot of police cars, even for New York?” Peach points out the window. Everyone jumps up to see where she’s looking. About Twenty police cars race by closely followed by a fire truck and three ambulances. Adriel stares in the direction they are going before it finally clicks.

“They’re going to Freddy’s!!”

Adriel sits on the floor in front of her couch, sunlight streaming in at the exact right angle. Akira sits cross legged on the couch above her, messing with the top of her hair.

“Ok, now that it’s been about two weeks since the incident, the current news coverage is probably all we are going to get.” Adriel sighs. “It’s spread far though. My classmates haven’t been able to stop talking about it.”

“It makes sense. You’re a culinary student, so when five murders occurred in a restaurant and one of them was of the chef, of course your classmates aren’t gonna shut up about it.” Akira says.

“I guess that makes sense. But on that topic, the chef is the most confusing part. Four of them were children mirroring the murders from the eighties, which makes me think that it could be the original murderer coming back with a vengeance. But the last one was a grown adlt, not another child. Them being a chef as well as those texts I got makes me think it’s K just playing some sick game with me.”

Akira kisses the top of Adriel’s head, “Whoever it is, I’m sure we’ll figure it out and then we can get back to stopping Kirby from swallowing the city.” Adriel leans her head back into his lap and pulls him into a kiss.

The front door slams and a voice calls out “I’m home!”

“Sumire!” Adriel jumps up. “What have you found out?”

Sumire strolls into the living room, taking her coat off as she does. “I learned what Link would do if life gave him lemons. Make combustible lemons to burn life’s house down.”
Adriel gives her a “really” look. “About the murders.”

“Oh, the police are leaving Freddy’s, and it will no longer be an active crime scene. However, surveillance will still be pretty heavy.” Sumire states.

“Then tonight is the night. We need to figure out what actually happened cause if it’s K’s fault, the police will never believe that a human version of Kirby exists.” Adriel internally prepares herself. “You guys ready?”

Freddy’s is dark save for the flashlight on Akira’s phone. He, Adriel, and Sumire walk closely together, glancing around and avoiding running into the tables. The curtains around the stage are closed and Adriel shudders to imagine what’s behind them.

“This is creepier than Maruki’s palace.” Sumire trembles. Akira looks to her with sympathy and Adriel feels a twinge of jealousy. She knows she shouldn’t be jealous, after all Akira chose to break up with Sumire for her, but remembering that they were dating when they went through everything in Maruki’s palace just makes her struggle.

“This way,” Akira points towards the employee only area. Adriel moves closer to him and grabs his hand.

“We should do something after this is all resolved,” she whispers in his ear. “Maybe even take the next step in our relationship.” Akira flushes bright red and tries to stutter something out.

“I don’t know what you just said,” Sumire interrupts, “but we need to focus on the mission ahead of us.” Her face shows an air of annoyment with a hint of anger.

They all continue forward into the employee area. The break room is first with the next door being ominously cracked open. Adriel clings tighter to Akira, but Sumire pulls them both farther into the darkness. The next room looks like a repair room; animatronic heads lit up by the emergency exit light. There doesn’t seem to be any other doors, so they split up to look around. Adriel pulls open her phone to turn on the flashlight but opens the messages instead. The mysterious messages still sit there taunting her. “It’s not my fault.” she reassures herself. As they finish circling, Adriel pulls herself to Akira once again.

“Do you think the police might have found everything there is?”

Akira pats her on the head, “Yeah...” He’s interrupted by Sumire shouting.

“There’s stairs!” she yells.

“Wait, what?” Adriel is in shock.

They scurry over to the stairs and stare into the black pit below. “You go first.” Adriel directs Akira.

They slowly make their way down into the basement, a musty smell getting worse as they go. The room they find themselves in is nearly a mirror image of the upstairs, only much damper and with a slight smell of ... Iron? There’s a lump covered by a tarp in the corner and the closer they get the more metallic the air tastes.

“Should we?” Sumire looks at Adriel for assurance.

Adriel thinks for just a moment before grabbing one side of the tarp. It’s heavy but with all three of them working together, they get it off. Sumire lets out a loud gasp. The sight that awaits them is one of horror. What looks like an animatronic bunny with holes in the fabric sits against a bench. Dried blood oozes out of the holes and skull fragments sit in the head. A knife sits in it’s hand with what is clearly newer blood than what’s on the body. Adriel turns away, gagging. Akira leans in and reaches for its arm. It twitches and he jumps back.

“Guys, it’s moving!” He screams.

The animatronic comes to life in just a few seconds, standing up before any of them can move.

“Well, well, well. Kirby told me you might be by.” He turns as his eyes latch onto Adriel. “Especially you. He said you’re curiosity would get the better of you, particularly after he sent those messages.”

Adriel resists the urge to run, “Who are you? And how do you know K?”

“I’m William Afton and he’s my business partner. I distract you what he’s really working on, and I get to murder more kids. Easiest business deal ever.”

“More? What do you mean more?” She slowly takes a step back.

“Isn’t it obvious. I committed the original murders. This suit was in much better shape back then and I wasn’t dead yet, but thankfully I always come back.” He faces all three, “Unfortunately the fun is over. For you at least.”

He lunges towards Sumire and Akira pulls her away just in time. They sprint towards the stairs as Afton lumbers behind them. Adriel follows suit and they tumble up the stairs. Afton is still close behind them as they run through the break room and into the dining area. Akira trips over a table and nearly head plants on the ground. While they keep going, Adriel glances at the stage and notices the curtain is open. There’s no time to worry as they push their way out the front door only to run directly into a police officer.

“Woah where are you going in such a hurry?” He asks.

“Bunny... Murderer... Dead..” Is all Adriel can gasp out, pointing back at the door.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” The cop glances inside the door, “There’s nothing in there. However, that is a private business, so you need to come with me.”

Adriel, Akira, and Sumire all glance at each other before taking off at full speed down an alleyway.
