Sonnet for Brendan the Builder

Summary:

A poem in the English sonnet form for Father's Day: the tragic story of a father-figure from a classic Foil Arms and Hog sketch.

Work Text:

Upon a lonely beach we see him stand,
A builder bold whose lofty visions soar;
Who in his chosen medium of sand
Is architect, inventor, and much more.
The sculpting contest he will surely win
So he shows off his work with great delight,
Offering castle tours, outside and in -
All heedless of his rival’s jealous spite.
Then Jason toddles in - a lively boy,
And budding sculptor at his father’s side;
This child is Brendan’s greatest pride and joy -
Alas! Doomed at the turning of the tide.
Such woe a father's heart can scarce withstand:
Young Jason melted, being made of sand.
