Gem, Scott, Cleo and Pearl stood up above a heavily destroyed village in an unusually flat world. The dirt gathered from digging out the ground had been used to pillar them upwards ad Pearl had constructed a very hasty wooden shack. The heavily destroyed village was below them, as were the other lifers, all scattering to try and get more resources.
“Sooo…” Gem asked, wanting to fill the time. “How are you and Cam?” She laughed when Scott blushed. Cam was Scott’s boyfriend from one of the servers they shared, and from the few times they had been seen together, Gem thought they were really cute together.
“Good.” Scott finally managed to get out, his relationship being public still a relatively new thing. The rest of the group laughed, before Pearl piped up, looking adorably confused.
“Wait… am I the only straight member of the group?” She asked incredulously. Gem blinked before looking around at their gathered Gaslight Gatekeep and Girlboss and realised Pearl was right. She was the only straight member.
“You are.” Cleo snorted, looking around at their very diverse group.
“Pearl’s the token straight.” Gem declared, giggling wildly. The height seemed to be getting to her, the vertigo of being so high pumping adrenaline through her and tinging everything with a sense of impermanence.
“Oh great – now how’s this happened?’ Pearl joked, blowing a strand of hair out of her face, though they all knew she was secretly laughing. Pearl was one of the greatest allies, even if she was the definition of straight.
“It’s ok Pearl – You can still Gaslight Gatekeep and Girlboss.” Scott declared, snapping his fingers as he repeated their name. How this group was still alive, none of them knew.
“On it.” Pearl saluted at Scott. “We’ve already gaslit the server into thinking we are down there with the rest of them.” She peered over the edge, where the other were running around, barely visible.
“And we’ve gatekept our resources, as you always do in these games.” Cleo added, displaying all the iron and diamonds they’d gathered from trading with the wanderers.
“So now we just need to girlboss and win these games!” Pearl finished, and they all cheered like some sort of sport team celebrating before taking to the field.
“How hard can it be?” Scott asked, clearly joking as he glanced around. Gem realised then that Pearl wasn’t the only one who stood out.
“Oh – you’re kidding me. I’m the only one here who hasn’t won a game!” She groaned, pretending to be upset.
“It’s ok Gem – we’ll be the odd ones out.” Pearl smiled, looping her arm through Gem’s. “Maybe you’ll win today?” She suggested, and Gem grinned menacingly.
“I’ve got to try at least.”
