Did Blue hear the vent open? Did White's ghost somehow warn the doctor of the impending danger? Was Green just the unluckiest impostor to have ever lived?
Whatever the reason, Blue had turned around just in time to see the mass of flesh and tentacles wearing Green's suit leap out of the vent, and their eyes widened in shocked disbelief.
"Wha–…" they stammered. "Green, is it really you?" Their expression turned to perplexity and concern. "Does it hurt?"
Now it was Green's turn to pause in shock. "What."
"How did it happen?" Blue gently cupped their hand around one of the impostor's tentacles and brought it closer to examine it, before looking up to Green's visor again. "Tell me everything you did yesterday. Try to remember what you touched, or if anything felt odd. Have no fear, I'll do everything in my power to find a cure to this peculiar condition."
"I don't need a cure," Green answered, much more softly than they had intended. "This is me. The new, improved, powerful me." They didn't snatch their tentacle away from Blue's hand.
"Oh." The doctor frowned and let go of the tentacle, although they still showed no fear and made no move to run away or attack. "Green," they asked in a very serious tone, "did you kill White?"
"… Yes."
The impostor squirmed. They knew what Blue was going to ask next, and without fail, the question came out and pierced their alien heart like a knife: "Have you come to kill me?"
Blue's gaze bore into Green's soul, and Green felt their pink secretions drip like sweat. They wiped their brow with a nervous tentacle before answering.
"You shouldn't have insisted to scan everyone. If the crew learns the truth, I know you all will eject me into space." They hadn't meant for it to sound like a pitiful apology! All the crewmates needed to be eliminated, starting with the one in front of them, who definitely was the most pressing threat!
"Green," Blue scolded. "I'm a doctor. I save lives, I don't take them. Forsake killing, and I swear I will protect you with my own life if I have to," they vowed, a hand on their heart.
They took a step towards the impostor with an aura of compassion and determination, and Green felt themselves melting. This was not the plan! Why was Blue even still alive? Stupid sexy doctor!
"But I… I killed White. And I have to kill you all. I want to." Green twitched, some of their pent-up anger pushing through the doctor's charm. "They treat me like I'm the dirt under a worm. All of them, even Red. And it's not new, either. You think the village sent me here because they supported me? No! I had to lie and trick and guilt-trip them. Nobody sees me, nobody ever has. But I'll make them. Nobody will dismiss me. Ever. Again."
Blue looked straight at the impostor. "I see you, Green. I have recognised your potential since I've met you. And yes, killing White was wrong, and you'll have atonement to do to find peace. But," they went on, raising a fist and looking up, glowing with passion, "it's never too late to change and become the person you truly want to be. Not a monster killing in the dark, whom everybody fears and hates, but a leader who, through their example, inspires others to give the best of themselves."
The doctor looked to Green again, a shining embodiment of crewmanity and encouragement. "I see you," they reiterated. "Let me, and I can guide the others to see you too." They held out a friendly hand to Green. "Help me help you, Green. Together, we can build a place for you, a place where you will never again feel you have to kill to be heard. A place where you will feel valued to your true worth."
Blue was hot and smart. Mostly hot. That made them a threat to be eliminated as soon as possible. Green just had to lunge and rip out their face…
Oh, who were they kidding. They couldn't find it in themself to silence this mesmerising voice. The only person who had ever accepted Green for who they really were, instead of Green needing to fish for their pity. The person who could touch Green's heart, instead of Green playing them like a fiddle. It felt… nice.
Maybe Green could keep Blue alive a bit longer, after all? Just a bit longer.
They shrunk back into their unassuming unpaid intern body and took Blue's held out hand.
Swoon.
