Chapter 1: Letter of demands

Chapter Text

When he got the letter, he didn't know what to expect.

His mysterious employers said that he would get more information from them, but this?

This was not what he was expecting.

It was a green envelop with a wax seal in the shape of a crow, the symbol of rot and death.

When his employers said that they would get him a way in, he didn't expect this.

The only reason he chose this job is that he was curious, he wanted to know why all the newspawns with red horns and close to pitch black eyes were going missing after getting a letter.

The letter he was holding right now.

If he didn't hid his appearance so well, he would've been worried.

A least he forged those documents quickly, so no one could find out his age.

He still is kinda sacred.

When he picked up that stupid poster and called that number, he thought it would be a quick gig.

But now, the fear is setting in.

"I- I can do this, fuck i've dealt with worse."

Holy Swords, hopefully nothing happens to Rocket when I'm gone.

What a way to start my 16th birthday, I love lying about my age on jobs.

He opens the envelop.

And a pin drops out of it, and a stray piece of paper.

He grabs the pin first, it was a deep gold and had a crow skull on it.

It was very beautiful.

He needs it for his nest.

Shut up stupid brain, I ain't a bird.

He leans over and picks up the letter, trying to not smudge the ink in the process as he brings it closer to his face.

These stupid contacts make me unable to see anything, I know I should've gone with the more expensive ones.

It smells like sap and pine with a hint of moss, a smell that would be rare to find in the crossroads due to their lack of forests, only finding them in those perfume shops that he and Rocket would see on their outings.

He can't help but take another whiff of it before reading the elegant handwriting.

"Dear infernal.

We have summoned your presence in the deep forests of rot, as for we require something we are due.

Do not fear tomorrow.

Only fear yourself.

And us."

It was signed with a smudged handwriting, making Sword be unable to decree who they are.

He takes another whiff of the letter before packing it up into his pocket, doing his best not to crease the edges and make it stay its old quality minus the folding.

He brushes off the dirt on the poncho that he was given by an old friend before swiping it on.

"I wonder how dear old Grappling Hook is doing? Hopefully they have not worried to badly after my sudden leave from the group."

Its not like he had similar ideals with the group, but he had no reason to hate the oh so "fake" deities.

Since a certain encounter he had when he was younger, he could never bring up the courage to hate them.

So after some time, he packed up his thing from the group and left, going to the crossroads to live a new life.

Far away from his mistakes and past.

A least over here they can't read fake documents as well.

He grabs the pin, but before deciding to put it on, he gets a knock at the front door.

And he smells pine through the cracks of his rundown shitty apartment.

He peakes through the doorknob, and its someone he has seen before.

Shit its the landlord.

He opens the door and is met face to face with his landlord, who seems pretty pissed.

"Pack your things."

What.

"Uh why?"

This seems to make him madder as he crosses his arms.

"You know what you did! Choosing to put this whole block in danger just cause you 'wanted space.' Insane!"

He spits out the last words, but his gaze turns fearfull when he notices the pin in Sword's grasp.

"Get out now!" He slams the door infront of Sword's face.

What the fuck.

He decides to pack up quickly so he won't have to deal with the asshole, lucky he had nothing of importance.

Not even a bed but that doesn't matter, he has to move quick.

Always.

He wished for a sense of normalcy, and sometimes theirs this nagging sense in the back of his head telling him to do things that aren't normal, like gather shiny rocks and make a pile of blankets.

Hes just weird maybe.

He grabs his rundown bag and packs all the essentials, including to make sure that his back up black horn dye and back up gray contacts are packed before he heads out the door.

"Now were do I go?"

Fuck Rocket's going to pissed that I got kicked out for no apparent reason, hopefully he doesn't try to jump the landlord.

That's it!

I can go visit Rocket before I go tomorrow.

I'm such a genius.

"That was the most stupidest idea you've ever had! Choosing that commission will surely get you killed like the others!"

Rocket paces back and forth in his bedroom rubbing his temples.

But before Sword can say anything to agrue, his boyfriend cuts in.

"That's it! Your staying here indefinitely, Zuka and me have already been trying to push you to stay and this is the perfect moment."

"Rocket…"

He says his name in a condescending tone.

"Don't use that tone on me! Your staying!" He grabs Sword's hand in his own.

"I-"

"No! Your staying here. " He pushes Sword onto to his back on his bed before launching himself like a cat on top of Sword, laying there.

"What are you doing?"

"Making sure you can't leave and can rest instead."

"Ugh. I hate when you do this." Sword can feel his face heating up.

"No you don't."

"Fine I don't really." He mumbles.

He lays there defeated, as Rocket throws a blanket on the two of them, prepping for the night.

"I love you Sword."

He feels his face heats up as he messes up his response.

"I- I love you too."

He gets a chuckle from the other as the two fall into the land of slumber.

He slowly removes himself from Rocket's grasp as he grabs his bag and poncho, which now has the pin ontop.

He kisses Rocket's forehead before he walks over to the window.

He quickly writes a note.

"I'm sorry, but I need to find the answers.

I love you."

He opens the window and hops out.

Heading to the forest.
