You shine as bright as the candle
on the table between us.
There’s no scandal,
no fuss.
All we need is each other
to keep the smoke down
so as not to smother
us. As not to drown.
The heat and light
keeps us right where we are.
It should send us into fight-or-flight
but instead we stall unlike the char.
The flames build and take
everything we put at stake.
