Summary:

Link and Zelda find they are not who they were born as. Linka is learning to become a princess, and Zeldo is learning to be a hero. It’s an arrangement that has struggles.

And they also learn they want more than just training. They want what the other has. They don’t feel bound to roles assigned by fate, and so fate rearranges itself to fit itself to them.

The new Zelda has prophetic dreams - and because she is not bound in tradition, she sees a different way forward when Ganondorf offers a courting gift.

Apparently a Prince and the Pauper story.

"Not quite like that," Linka said with a small crack to her attempted feminine voice as she corrected Zeldo's grip.

Linka could swear the Master Sword sighed in dismay. She ignored it as Zeldo nodded and chafed his grip.

"Like this, right?" Zeldo confirmed in a soft baritone that still had a roundness to the edges.

"Exactly. And from there, it needs to now be an extension of the arm. Try again," Linka encouraged and stepped back.

Zeldo sighed and set his feet. Linka found herself quite enamored of watching the way the muscles in his back tensed and her new hero readied himself.

In one smooth motion, Zeldo moved his entire body in an arc, his sword meeting and passing through the training dummy. The object fell in half and Zeldo squealed in delight before remembering himself and cheering gruffly instead.

"You did it!" Linka ran up behind him and wrapped her hands around her hero and bounced in joy.

"I did it!" Zeldo confirmed in delight.

"We'll add a shield in later. Let's celebrate with lunch!" Linka grinned as her hero wrapped an arm around her.

"Alright. But this time, no help on which fork to use," Zeldo grinned back.

"Ugh. Fine. If I ever get the chance, I'm naming more than one of each at the table," Linka complained.

"You've grown your hair out long enough, you can almost pass as me. Do you want the chance to try?" Zeldo asked as he lead her across the training room to their modest offerings. Zeldo still wasn't sure about this whole 'sandwich' thing.

"I would, but I still can't do the voice," Linka said.

"Maybe we need to try a little more immersion. How about I call you Zelda, and you call me Link?"

"Still feeling weird about just changing one letter?" Linka asked.

"It just feels… weird? Like I'm still the princess, somehow," Zeldo sighed and shook his head. He let go of Linka to assemble a plate for her. "It also still feels weird to be doing this."

"It still feels weird to be waited upon, Link," Zelda scratched her face in embarrassment.

"Stop. Princesses don't fidget like that," Link said with a pleased blush.

"Yessir," Zelda replied with a lopsided grin as her hero lead her to a chair. NuLink set the plate down before a chair.

Zelda blushed harder as he pulled the chair out. She moved in front of it and settled herself carefully as he eased the chair behind her.

"Why does it make my heart flutter to be treated like this?" Zelda asked.

"Probably the same reason it makes mine do the same to tend to my Princess Zelda," Link replied.

Zelda sighed as his hands helped collect the hair from the edges of her neck and gathered them to the side. Link's gentle touch teased at the back of her neck, and Zelda found herself suddenly very bothered.

"You're making very un-princess-like sounds," Link advised as his fingers kept teasing through her hair.

"That feels really good and…" Zelda sighed and bit her lip.

"And?" Link prompted.

"I want to do some very ladylike things," Zelda whined.

"Food first," Link prompted. "Otherwise you'll run out of energy well before I can make you feel some very ladylike things."

"So it's doing the same to you?" Zelda asked.

"A gentleman doesn't speak of such lewd things," Link replied as his fingers burrowed into his princess's hair to scritch her scalp and drawing a long, needful moan from her.

"Hero's not a gentleman," Zelda replied as she leaned back into the touch. Her body burned with a wholly unfamiliar want as her fingers shook in anticipated need.

"Oh? Well. Maybe lunch can wait…" Link snickered as he gathered her hair slowly.

"I'll never learn the right fork," Zelda turned enough to look at him from the corner of her eye.

"Maybe there isn't a right fork. Maybe we find the fork that works as we go," Link licked his lips and reached forward to draw a finger across her lips slowly.

"You aren't talking about silverware," Zelda observed as she kissed his thumb.

"I'm not," Link confirmed.
