Between the Silence

Sunset over the lake at Hogwarts proves much more interesting than Sirius had anticipated.

Sirius gave Remus a gentle nudge with his elbow. “Don’t look so bloody cheerful, will you?”

Remus forced a tight-lipped smile. “Sorry.”

“No, it’s fine. I can see how watching a beautiful sunset with your drop dead gorgeous best mate might depress a bloke.”

Remus didn’t respond.

Sirius kept his eyes fixed on the lake, the shining water dappled orange and purple in the half-light of dusk. He was all too aware of his thigh resting against Remus’s thigh and the way his fingers were thrumming as they had been all year, restless with the need to brush against Remus’s skin, his hair, the fabric of his clothes.

It had hung between them for far too long, this nameless thing, the shift in their friendship that had him abandoning raucous kitchen raids with James to do homework with Remus or buttoning his shirt lopsided because he was too busy watching Remus fasten his tie.

“It’s not you,” Remus said eventually. “Or the sunset. It’s...well, it’s nerves.”

“Nerves?”

“Yeah.”

“What are you-?”

Warm breath on his cheek made the rest of Sirius’s sentence catch in his throat. He turned toward Remus, pulse racing, and audibly gasped when soft lips met his. He dare not move, frightened it was all a dream and he might wake up at any moment the way he had so many times before. Then Remus slid long fingers into his hair and pressed his lips more firmly against Sirius’s. Sirius didn’t hesitate a moment longer, he kissed back hungrily and grabbed fistfuls of Remus’s shirt to pull him closerclosercloser.

When they finally broke apart, lips swollen and jaws aching, the sun had slipped beneath the horizon unnoticed.
