"I can't do this," Rory could barely get the words out. She stood up, her hands setting over her stomach, trying to hold in the urge to puke, backing away from the dinner table as her mother and grandmother started shouting at each other again.
She practically ran outside, the tears blinding her as the cold Connecticut night air hit her. She went into her car, but didn't drive back to Stars Hollow. And if she couldn’t go back to Stars Hollow, nor stay in Hartford, there was only one place left on Earth where no one would look at her with pity and disappointment, or surround her with a loving but crushing safety net. She threw her handbag and phone onto the passenger seat and headed toward Manhattan.
