Drinking is Fun, Not as Much as You Though

Summary:

She downed the rest of her drink. “I th-thhink we should do another shot!” She said dangerously slurring her words, her movements rather slow. “Jackie! Get us more shots please!” She said with a rather bright enthusiasm that could only be mistaken for a drunk.

“Jackie?” Harper said to Jackson with a humorful sarcasm, questioning the nickname.

“Yeah, don’t ask. I don’t even know where that came from. Why didn’t we cut her off like 3 rounds ago?”

Harper scoffed at his comment. “Listen, I am not close enough to hold that responsibility. You two are her friends. What about that?”

(Lucy POV)

The night was lively. It was fun, more fun than she had in a long time. Going out wasn’t as fun when you can’t bring out your partner, but drinking always helps. Drinking with friends was fun, Lucy thought to herself. So when a casual night with friends turned into 2 rounds, which turned to three to four, she didn’t question it. She didn’t question when the others rightfully cut themselves off, even when she wanted to keep going.

So if you had asked Lucy how many drinks she had that night, she couldn’t tell you. All she could think about is how much fun ‘Angie’ is, how much she wished she could bring her girlfriend along to these excursions. Even when it was time to go home, she just wanted her favorite person in this entire world, Angela Lopez.

Jackson shook his head and then looked to Nolan. “I didn’t think she would get this drunk. Let’s just get her home. Sounds good?” Nolan looked around for encouragement for his supposed plan.

“Sure. If we can get her to stop hugging the tequila like it’s her best friend. Say sorry to your replacement, Jackson.” Harper grinned at her comment to the rookie.

Lucy had her head on the table laid sideways, tracing circles with the water left over from the sweat of the cups. “Luce, you ready to go?” Jackson said in a soothing tone trying to get her out of this bar as calmly as possible. He laid his hand on her arm, hopefully aiding his plan.

Lucy immediately dragged away from his touch. She started shaking her head from side to side. “Nooooo! Don’t make me!” She started pouting.

“Lucy, we have to go.” Nolan said, trying to help Jackson out of this predicament.

“Noooo! Please, I want Angieeee!” She put her hands in her face. “I want herrrr. Not you two.” Number one, ouch Jackson thought to himself. Number two, what in the hell is happening right now.

“Angie?” Jackson inquired.

“Yes! I want her to take me. I want her to take me in her soft arms.” Jackson looked to Harper and Nolan who were completely befuddled with this newfound information. “Why can’t she just come!” Jackson saw an opportunity here, one which he was not about to leave to waste.

“Lucy, why do you want Lopez to come so bad?” Harper almost looked at him with a face that could kill. Not tonight though, this was almost too much.

“Jackson stop! I just want my girlfriend, please!” The table gasped aloud at that fact. The confirmation that Lucy and Angela were dating was huge for the three of them. “Bring me my girlfriend, pleaaaseee!” She was being extra whiney tonight. She started to open her purse and attempted to grab her phone from out of it. The clasp though was being extra difficult so it took longer than it should’ve. When she finally got it open she made a grunt that alluded to her success, and she started to open her phone. Face ID wasn’t scanning her so she tried putting in her password, but her movement was too shallow and slow to do anything. “Jackieeee! Can you put in the code? Pretty pleaseeee, I wanna call Angie?” She started to beg him for his help.

Jackson snickered at her nickname for Angela, something he was sure didn’t translate over in the daytime. He also had a look of curiosity, along with caution. “Sure Luce, whats the code?” He grabbed the phone, ready to put in the passcode for the phone.

“It’s her birthday!” She said, still slurring her words. Harper and Nolan almost burst out laughing, while Jackson was too intrigued, needing to keep his focus. “0-7-1-5-8-6, the best day in the whole wide world!” With that comment, Jackson couldn’t, no he wouldn’t, keep his laughter contained. He lost the losing battle and laughed so loud a few other people across the bar eyed him down for his excitement.

Lucy eyed him angrily, crossing her arms in retaliation and giving him a pout, slightly slouching. “Not funny, hmmph!” She turned her head to the other direction. “Can you call her, please! I wanna talk to the best girlfriend in the world!” Jackson had to breathe in to keep his composure.

He gained eye contact with her. “Why don’t I call her to come join us?”

“Really?” Her eyes almost sparkled. “I take back everything I said about you!”

Jackson was internally cursing about whatever Lucy was saying about him in her altered state. Never again, he thought. “Nolan, I’ll be back. Keep an eye on her. Do not let her out of your sight. Angela would kill me, or at least now she would.”

Nolan straightened his back, immediately registering the command he was given. “Understood. Go call Chen’s other half.”

Jackson nodded and started to walk outside, ringing his TO’s cellphone. It ran once then, “Lopez”

He was thinking of what we could possibly say to make her understand the situation. He decided to toy with her a little bit. “I’ve never pegged you for an actress, Lopez. It’s been what months?”

A beat of silence across the phone and then. “Jackson, if you called me at 11pm for a non-emergency, you better have a good excuse. I still have the right to blue page your ass.” Wow, she was good. Really good, but she wasn’t fooling anyone. And he thinks she knows that.

He chuckled just at the thought of that. “No, I don’t think so. I think I have you dead to rights actually.”  There were very few words that could explain the feeling of wonder that he was feeling at the moment.  Gotcha was one of them though.

He could hear an expressive sigh from across the line. “Jackson, get on with it or I am hanging up.” Not if she knew what he had to say. This was going to be fun.

“You’re dating my best friend Lopez. And I had no idea-”

Her reply was almost immediate. “What, no I’m not! She’s drunk West, confused.” The hole she was digging was only getting bigger and bigger.

“There’s no denying it now. Listen, I called you because Lucy is hammered and won’t let anyone take her home. She keeps crying out for her girlfriend. Now being her roommate you’d think I’d know if she was dating but no, I don’t.” His heart would’ve ached at the fact that Lucy felt like she had to keep a secret of this magnitude from him. If and only if he wasn’t having so much fun, toying with Angela’s emotions.

He heard a bunch of shuffling around on her end. She was on the move. “Jackson, she’s hammered! Why didn’t you tell me earlier? I’m on my way.”

He still felt like he had some explaining to do with his TO. “Listen Lopez, I’m fine with keeping your secret, but it’s a little mind boggling. You, my training officer and  my best friend.” He heard her scoff at his comment, mean.

“Jackson, Jackson. Focus up, what’s the bar?” Oh, right. A little distracted from the news he guessed, it was baffling. Also, you know alcohol.

“Right. It’s the sports bar off of La Cienaga.” After that he placed his phone in his pocket, ending the call and heading back inside. A look of worry plagued his face as he walked back to the table when Lucy was nowhere to be found. Nolan, I gave you one job, he thought. “Guys, where’s Lucy?” Oh no, oh no. Those were the thoughts that ran through his brain, Angela’s gonna kill me. With the newfound realization that they were dating, Angela and Lucy, he knew she would do anything for those she loved. Putting him right in between the crossfire as Angela’s rookie and Lucy best friend and roommate.

He looked Nolan dead in the face, he had gave him one job and he failed. Sometimes, just sometimes he really couldn’t believe him. On and off duty Nolan were 2 different cops. “Uhh-,” He stuttered and stumbled over his words. Not the time Jackson thought.  “Guys, she’s over there, by the bar.” Jackson groaned at his words. The point was to help her sober up potentially and get her to leave the bar, not having to add onto the number of advil she would have to take the next morning.

Jackson rushed over to where she was standing over by the bar. “Do you like my drink? I loooove tequila, don’t you. I mean not as much as Annngieee, not that you should know that.” Like that secret could go back in the box. She drank the little drink she had from the bar and put it on the counter.

“Lucy, we need to get you sober, okay?” He gently rushed her over to the table and sat her down, as he sat on the other side.

“Noooo!” She slurred her words again. “Drinking! Shots Jackie!” Her hands, previously under the table were now right above. One of which, was holding a shot glass.

Jackson looked in shock at the glass, along with the rest of the group. “Now, where the hell did that shot come from?” She leaned back and slugged it through her throat. ‘I am so dead’, is all Jackson could think of.

“Angieeee!” Jackson looked behind him to find one frustrated looking Angela Lopez. Staring him right down.

(Angela POV)

Angela was sitting on the couch in her living room. She was waiting for Lucy, her sunshine, to return to her after some drinks with Harper, Jackson, and Nolan. They had made a deal to not go out together in front of their friends, afraid of the tension between them possibly giving them away.

The group was celebrating a win between the rookies, and Nyla decided to join them. Nyla invited her along, but as to uphold their agreement she respectfully declined. Tim didn’t join because quote, ‘I don’t drink with rookies’. Which is a lie cause he has before, but she didn’t care enough to correct him.

She was watching some documentary, one of the ones Lucy likes when she felt a vibration near her leg. Phone was lit up, contact name, Jackson West.

“Lopez.” She spoke strongly into the phone.

She heard loud music across the line, along with the buzz of various people chatting throughout the bar. “I’ve never pegged you for an actress, Lopez. I mean it’s been what nine months.” Her heart sunk to the ground. Lucy wouldn’t just tell him, they promised to keep it confidential.

A single thought just kept running through her mind, play dumb. Don’t confirm shit. “Jackson, if you called me at 11pm for a non-emergency, you better have a good excuse. I still have the right to blue page your ass.”

She heard a chuckle on the other side of the line. “I don’t think so. I think I have you dead to rights, actually.”

She rolled her eyes. He was really going to drag this out wasn’t he. “Jackson, just get on with it, or I’m hanging up.” The only reason she hadn’t hung up yet was the small chance something was going on with Lucy.

She heard the buzz the the bar get smaller and smaller. “You’re dating my best friend, Lopez. And I had no idea-”

She sat up immediately. “What, no I’m not! She’s drunk West, confused.” Her heart felt like it was going to fall out of her chest.

“There’s no denying it now. Listen, I called you because Lucy is hammered and won’t let anyone take her home. She keeps crying out for her girlfriend. Now being her roommate you’d think I’d know if she was dating but no, I don’t.”

She could almost feel the small backspit of smite across the line. “Jackson, she’s hammered! Why didn’t you tell me earlier? I’m on my way.” With that she grabbed her keys and her jacket ready to go get her girlfriend.

“Listen Lopez, I’m fine with keeping your secret, but it’s a little mind boggling. You, my training officer and  my best friend.” Angela almost scoffed at his comment, he really didn’t know what it’s like to have them together.

“Jackson, Jackson. Focus up, what’s the bar?” She needed his attention right now, not for him to ramble about their relationship cause he was buzzed.

“Right. It’s the sports bar off of La Cienaga.” A moment of silence passed. She could hear loud noises ascend once again, signifying that Jackson was heading inside the bar once again. With the lively conversations and loud music. “Guys, where’s Lucy?” Jackson said, panic lacing his voice.

“Uhhh-,” Nolan stumbled over his words like a child, Angela thought. “She was right here a second ago.” Angela just turned on Cienga coming close to the bar.  “Guys, she’s over there, by the bar.” He ended his words with a bit of worry.

At this point in time it was obvious to Angela that Jackson had put his phone in his pocket and forgot to hang up. Well, she wasn’t going to do it for him. “Jacksonnnnn!” She could hear Lucy grinning through her teeth. “Do you like my drink? I loooove tequila, don’t you. I mean not as much as Annngieee, not that you should know that.” Angela just parked her car outside the bar as she rushed inside.

Angela arrived at the bar, seeing the live music inside and all she was filled with was anxiety. She knew the comments her little rookie friends were gonna make, this was supposed to be a casual outing and yet, somehow, she’s hammered.

She walked in and immediately spots her. She’s sitting at a table meant for four. Jackson, Harper, and Nolan were all there as well. Nolan looking guilty and Jackson looking upset. Harper was rather neutral, as she always is. She starts to walk over to the table when I see Lucy down another shot, what the fuck Jackson.

Angela hears Jackson faintly say, very harshly to Nolan. “Now, where the hell did that shot come from?” Lucy gulps it down and looks towards Angela as she arrived to the table.

“Angieeee!” Lucy gets up rather quickly, stumbling a bit as she does so, and grabbing onto Anglea. Lucy melts into the touch to her girlfriend, immediately snuggling into her side. She honestly looked like she could fall asleep on her shoulder right then and there.

“Jackson, I leave her here one night with you and this is what happens?” Angela was seething through her teeth. She was trying to not let her anger get the better of her as Lucy was right there, and she wished to not upset her.

“Angela, you know what we should do, we-we should dance!” She was stumbling all over her words. She grabbed Angela’s hand in an attempt to drag her to the dance floor, but as she was so intoxicated she could not move her in any sense or form.  All it took was one simple tug from Angela to bring her back and into her side once again.

“Luce, no. We have to get you home, don’t you wanna go home?” She asked, looking down at the little woman pressed into her side. She heard a snicker coming from either Jackson or Harper, one which she would absolutely address in a moment.

“I’ll say yes on one condition.” She said barely and unsteadily, putting a finger up, even somewhat curved. Her eyes fluttered slightly showing her sleepiness, as well.

Angela smiled down on her, she was so amusing when intoxicated. “Anything.”

“I wanna go-” She pointed a finger into Angela’s chest, still very weakly. “To your place. Pleaseeee!”

“Of course.” She eyed Jackson with a death stare so volatile it could rival Harper’s. “Jackson, not a word. Not tonight, not this week. Too soon. Also, this was supposed to be casual drinking, what the hell happened?”

“Okay, anytime is too soon, I get it. But Angela, I swear anytime I blinked she had another tequila drink in her hand. She wouldn’t even leave it would just be filled!”

“I will deal with you tomorrow.” She very quickly scanned the table. “And if anyone says anything about tonight, you’re dead to me. Especially you, Jackson.”

Jackson put his hands up in defense. “Hey, I tried my best!” He looked back at Nolan and Harper for some type of backup. There was none.

“Don’t try your best, try mine.” She looked back down at Lucy who was still snuggled in her side, somehow even more so. “Okay, I am taking her home. Everyone, not a word?”

“Not a word.” They all almost said in unison.

As Angela started to walk away with Lucy still tugged at her side she hears Harper softly say to the 2 rookies. “No promises if I hear Angie on shift.” She shook her head at the comment.

“Harper, don’t you start. I swear to god, you three look completely sober. I could be yelling how irresponsible this is. Wait no, yeah I am. Jackson, how could you be this irresponsible with your roommate?” Jackson looked around horrified.

“You said the three of us, why am I the only one getting flamed?” She said, pointing his fingers inward at himself in shock.

“Well, you’re the only one I can logistically yell at so. And don’t change the subject!” Lucy started to walk away, and by the time Angela had noticed she was out of her grasp. She went in for another tequila shot at the bar. “This is all your fault, Jackson!” She yelled across the bar. He quickly chased after her. The bartender just happened to be pouring some shots and he just put another one down for her. She slugged it back yet again.

“One more tequila, Pleaseeee!” She asked with a squeal lacing her voice. The bartender started to pour it, before Angela stepped in.

“No! She’s obviously too drunk for her own wellbeing. Do your fucking job and cut her off!” Angela yelled at the unassuming bartender. She was furious, what kind of establishment lets their customers get this inebriated?

“A sale’s a sale. Not my problem.” He just walked off going to tend to another ‘sale’, ugh so gross Angela thought to herself. If she was on duty she would arrest him for not keeping the peace, or some bullshit. Another time, another time.

Jackson turned her shoulder around so she was facing him. “He’s not worth it Lopez.”

“Fine.” She sighed, deciding to fight that battle another day. “Let me just get Lucy-” She turned around to where Lucy was supposedly standing. “Wh-where’s?” She looked around the bar, she was nowhere to be found. Then she saw a hand waving at her.

“Jackie! Come do karaoke, pleaseeee?” She begged from across the bar. She was queuing up some song to sing on the makeshift stage.

Jackson had his mouth gaped out and Angela looked fiery with passion. She was going to get Lucy home, no matter how chaotic she wanted to be. She walked all the way over to where she was standing on the makeshift stage. Half the people in the bar looking in her direction, mostly because of how drunk she was.

Lucy saw Angela and Jackson start to walk over. “Nope! We’re not doing this, not tonight.” She grabbed her hand, interlaced fingers and all. She then guided her direction through the bar. “Jackson, she’s all set, right?” Lucy was now hanging on her side once again.

He nodded at her statement. “Yes, ma’am.” He looked down nervously. “Goodnight Lopez.”

“You better not be late for rollcall.” She didn’t bother to look at him as she walked away.

“Wouldn’t dream of it.” He scoffed to himself at the absurd situation and walked back over to the group, ready to end the night.

She started to walk with Lucy outside where her vehicle was located. Even with all the anger she had at Jackson with how this happened in the first place, there was a warm quiet feeling that slowly replaced it. Lucy was safe, and that’s all that matters. They reached the exit of the bar, the music began to descend, and there were a few steps to reach the sidewalk. Angela tried to hold her up without fail, but she still stumbled. She has no idea how she managed to run away from her so many times. Angela had to put her hand on her waist, even if she didn’t mind it being there.

“Angieee?” She looked up to the woman holding her from the side. Her eyes glimmering from the streetlights.

“Yes, sunshine?” She looked down at her, still hanging onto her side. They began to reach to the car.

“We should get ice cream! O-or burgers! We should get both!” She said still slurring her words from the alcohol usage this evening. “Can weee!”

“No, baby-” She began to turn her down but Lucy had her retaliation.

“Boooo! Why?” She gave her pouting face, that would’ve worked on a lesser woman. Angela was no such woman.

“Because you need to get home to rest up. It’s way too late for you to eat anyhow.” She unlocked the car and opened the car door. “Now come on, get in.”

“No, Ice cream!” She pleaded.

“No. Get in the car or I’ll take you to your apartment and let Jackson take care of you.” She was bluffing, but Lucy didn’t know that.

“You wouldn’t.” She pouted.

“I would. Now get in.” She waved her hand into the car as a way to signal for her to get in, immediately.

“Fine, meanie.” She pouted as she hopped into the nice sedan.

“No, just care too much.” She buckled her seatbelt. “Love you, babe.” She placed a kiss on her forehead. She started to remove Lucy’s shoes that she had on, once done she shut the door and headed for the other car door and entered it.

Once Angela’s in the car, she starts it immediately while putting on her seatbelt. She reverses and drives out of the lot. Once on the main road she takes her right hand and intertwines it with Lucy’s. Lucy melts into the touch once again and rests her head on the cold glass window. Angela shakes her head at the events that have conspired tonight, but she did look so cute and too small against her car door window. It just felt right.

Angela drives for a while before entering her driveway. It was time to get Lucy into bed, as soon as possible. She removed her hand from Lucy’s and the realization was immediate on Lucy’s side. “Nooo!” She stirs a bit, still not totally awake.

Angela exits the car and moves to the other side, ready to get Lucy out. She opens the door carefully, trying to not spook Lucy. She shakes her shoulder a bit. “Luce, Lucy we’re home.”

“Nooo! I’ll do it tomorrow!" She mumbles in her sleep. She was still pretty out of it.

Angela shook her shoulder one more time. “Lucy, wake up, we have to go inside.” She waited patiently as Lucy came to.

“Angie! I had a dream th-that I went to a bar with Nolan and Jackson. Oh-ooh Harper was there too! And Jackson was suuuuper annoying, but you weren’t there. I wished you were there, I missed you.” Angela shook her head at her retelling of events from the night.

“Lucy, that was real. We’re at my place, ready to snuggle into bed, you wanna do that?” Angela waited patiently for her response.

She watches as Lucy fiddles with her seatbelt and Angela decides to take care of all of it. She unbuckles her seatbelt and carries her bridal style to the bedroom inside. Lucy snuggles into her side, which makes it all the harder to carry her. She makes it all the way without dropping her though.

She places her on the bed and Lucy inches and melts into the pillow. “Angie! Come to bed, please?”

“Well, we need to change you out of these clothes first. Come on, up!” Lucy reluctantly leans up,  letting Angela undress her. She takes off her pants, then shirt, then bra. She then places an oversized t-shirt on her for sleep and ties up her hair into a swift bun. “There you go, all set.”

Angela started to leave the room, trying to get all the things Lucy would need in the middle of the night or the morning. All before Lucy grabs her hand. “Nooo! Angieee, come here!” She whined like a little child. A sweet adorable one though.

“Alright, let me change.” She headed towards her closet and quickly changed into something more comfortable. She snuggled up right next to Lucy. “All better?”

“Mmm-hmm!” She said with a grin on her face and a shake of her head. She eventually melted into Angela’s side and her soft touch. Angela pulled the blankets over them both. She listened carefully as her breathing evened out and waited a bit after that. All to make sure she wouldn’t wake her up.

Once she was sure the sleeping beauty on her side wouldn’t wake, she got up carefully. She walked down the hall down to the kitchen. She grabbed a few advil and a cup of water. She walked back into the bedroom and placed the things she grabbed on the nightstand. Angela went to the bathroom and grabbed a makeup remover wipe and went to Lucy, gently wiped off her makeup, and disposed of the makeup wipe.

She then once again, snuggled right into Lucy’s side, her eyelids got heavier and heavier, fluttering as time went on and she let sleep take her.

Angela wakes up with the morning sunlight beaming in. She looks to her left and sees her radiating sunshine, her skin glowing in the morning sun. She looked a little pale, but Angela blamed it all on the alcohol from last night's events.

Eventually, Lucy begins to shift and stir in her sleep. Angela moves a piece of her hair out of her face. “Morning, sunshine. How we feeling?”

She groaned as she was asked the question. “Like I was thrown in the garbage disposal and spitted back out.” She mumbled as she opened her eyes. Her gaze softened, slightly.

“Sit up, there’s some Advil and water on your nightstand.”  Lucy gave her a look of appreciation and sat up. She immediately grabbed the pills and water. “So what do you remember from last night?” She gulped down the pills.

“I remember-, I remember missing you and wishing you could be out with us. Nolan was talking about something, again. I remember Jackson hoovering-”

“You did a lot more than miss me. You kept complaining why your girlfriend couldn’t be there with you.” Angela said with a blunt sarcasm in her voice along with a grin on her face.

“No-, I did not.” She looked with a stunned look on her face.

“You did. ‘Angieeee’.” Angela said in a mocking voice, imitating Lucy from last night.

“I faintly remember that.” Lucy groaned and put her hands in her face.

“You outed us. And that’s not even the worst part.”

A million things ran through Lucy’s mind while Anglea just laid there, waiting for the laps her mind was imagining. “And what would that be?”

“You were a total sap. Made me a sap too.” She smiled as she pushed a piece of hair behind Lucy’s ear.

“I always knew I could change you.”

“You’re stuck with me sweetheart.”

“Yeah-, Yeah I am.” Angela leaned in for a kiss at Lucy’s words. No matter how chaotic and drunk Lucy had decided to be, tequila being her best buddy, she would always love her.

They laid there for a while, all until Angela started to get a call.

She felt the vibrations coming from her nightstand first, and then the lit up screen. She grabbed her phone and unplugged it from its charger. “It’s Tim.”

Lucy groaned and threw her head to the side. Angela laughed at her antics. “Don’t answer. Just leave him on heard.”

Angela chuckled. “That’s not a thing and I can’t do that. What if it’s important? Come on Luce.” She kissed the top of her forehead. She picked up the phone call. “Lopez.”

“So, you have something you wanna tell me?” Her heart sunk. She immediately looked over to Lucy. Lucy read her worried expression saying ‘What?’ without a sound coming out, just moving it out with her lips. Angela honed back in on the phone call.

A moment of silence passed before Angela said anything. “Who told you? Was it Nolan? Harper? Oh, if it was Jackson, I’m gonna-”

Tim chuckled behind the line. “Actually Lucy did. You might want to tell her to check her instagram story.” Her heart dropped to her fucking ass now. She muted the call.

“Lucy, check your story. You apparently posted something.” Lucy looked immediately and was horrified by what she saw. It was a video of her saying how much she adored her perfect girlfriend in the world ‘Angie!’.

“Cute Nickname by the way.” Oh, Bradford could be so irritating, Angela thought to herself.

“Shut it Bradford. Why do you even follow your rookie on social media?” She looked to her left and saw Lucy immediately trying to remove the temporary story.

“For moments like these.” Angela pinched the space between her two eyes and the bridge to her nose. “Don’t worry, it wasn’t on her main account so the entirety of Mid-Wilshire doesn’t know.”

“Why-” Angela started to question why he followed her on her alternate account.

“Don’t question it. You’re welcome by the way. You owe me.”

“No, I don’t.”

“No, you don’t. Bye, Angie.” Before she could retaliate from his mockery the line clicked.

Lucy turned to her girlfriend. “Well, that makes last night all the more exciting.”

“Promise you’ll never go drinking without me? Last night was horrible.” Angela pleaded with her girlfriend.

“I promise. You can be my tequila.” Lucy wrapped her hand around the side of Angela’s face.

“Yeah, right.” There was no way she would ever give up tequila. “I can promise to cut you off though.”

“Deal.”
