Chapter Text
Yellow sits on his bed, twirling his gun in his hands idly. His right leg bounces, hat set on the bed to his right. A knock at his door makes him sit upright, suddenly aware of how hunched over he was. He should probably find a decent hobby, imagine being walked in on doing absolutely nothing! ...he decides that he'll ask Seth for a book later.
"Eh— who's'ere?" He stands, putting his gun in the holster and grabbing his hat, fiddling with the brim for a brief moment before placing it slightly askew on his head. Before he gets an answer, Blue cracks the door open.
"You're decent?" He presumes, and fully opens the door with a short "Mhm," from Yellow. Blue holds his hands behind his back and has a soft, playful smile playing on his lips.
Yellow feels himself start to sweat nervously, trying to mimic Blue's smile. "Hey, pardner— whatcha here for?" He can't help but tilt his head slightly.
Blue clears his throat slightly. "I know we don't technically have birthdays, I don't believe," He begins, looking away slightly, "but... I thought it'd be nice to celebrate something. Why not just do a little something now?"
He holds out what he'd had behind his back. A cute, scruffy little coyote plush. "I saw it and it made me think of you, darling. Think of it as a present for your imaginary birthday."
Tears slowly began welling in Yellow's eyes. He should definitely take it, yeah, it'd be rude not to, but he can't be too hasty. Thanks are in order, as well.
"Why, uh— thanks plenty, pardner!" He totally just fumbled that. His voice trembled slightly against his best efforts to keep it steady, and he had barely moved to take the darn thing.
He reached out to accept the gift, as careful as he felt he could be without looking suspicious. He internally decided to name it as quickly as possible— a new partner deserves a name, pronto.
"Yellow, darling, are you alright? Have I hurt your feelings?" Blue prodded lightly, concern blooming at the sound of Yellow's voice.
"Oh, yeah, jus' fine, sorry ta worry ya— thank ya lots, pardner." Yellow nodded lightly. A part of him, slightly lacking in logic, wished Blue would leave him to his own devices already, wanting to curl up with his new buddy and take a nice nap.
Alas, he hadn't even taken his boots off and he'd been in his room for well over an hour. No naps would take place any time soon.
"Alright, well, I suppose I'll let you have your evening back." A part of him, even less logical, wished Blue would stay with him, indulge him in his odd wants.
Yellow let out a soft, broken whine as Blue turned slightly to leave, panicking to blend it into a sentence. "A'ight— I'll see ya tomorro'?" He gave a smile.
Blue halted, eyebrows furrowing just slightly. Gosh darnit, he messed that up horrifically. He'd never seen Blue be annoyed or upset before but with how insufferable Yellow must seem, it's not impossible. "Are you sure you're okay, dear?"
For a moment, the only noise in the room was the soft scuffing of Yellow's boots against the floor and fabric brushing against itself barely audibly as he took a step back and brought the stuffed animal to his chest. "Y..yeah, a'course, sorry, don't let me hold ya up any longer." He laughed, a light, breathy chuckle, hardly of any substance.
Yellow sat himself on his bed, resigning himself to looking away in silence until he was alone. With enough reason for concern, words don't quite soothe Blue, he'd just have to wait and try not to be any weirder.
Tears had begun to finally overflow, running in a slow, small drip down his cheeks. His cheeks burned with embarassment. "You're crying." Blue couldn't help but remark as he pondered briefly over what to do.
For somebody else, he'd have considered simply leaving - sometimes a person just needs a bit alone - but that's nowhere near the best option for Yellow, ever. He can't be left alone for terribly long, resulting in near daily visits from at least one of his fellow flowers.
Having light steps can often be an asset for Blue, but it only served to make Yellow jump when a hand found its way to his shoulder. "I promise, I'm alright, I jus', uh..." Yellow sniffled lightly.
"Just what, dear?" Blue lowered himself to his knees on the floor, moving both hands to rest on his lap.
"'s nothin' important, I swear. It's stupid." Yellow sighed, lowering his arms to wrap around his midsection, still holding onto the plush. "Ya don't... needta know." Saying anything would just be putting unnecessary stress onto somebody so undeserving of burdens.
He might as well be manipulating the poor guy. It's cruel, making him so worried. For what, attention? Yellow doesn’t deserve attention, he aint a good enough person for that, let alone from a flower as lovely as Blue.
"Whatever it is, it's not 'stupid'. If it's making you upset, I'd like to do whatever I can to help, dear, but I can't if you won't tell me." Blue bit back a sigh— he was only concerned, but Yellow would surely take it a different way.
"It is, it's stupid an' dumb. 'S fine, I'm fine." Yellow huffed, whining without even realizing.
He could've prevented this, if he'd just been better. Acted more normal or held off a little longer, even just told him to come back later. All ignorance on his part.
Yellow tilted his head further down, just serving to make his hat slowly begin sliding. He couldn't be bothered to adjust it.
Blue gave a soft hum, considering his options. "Yellow, sweetie, why don't you take your boots off at least— they can't be comfortable." If he can't get his sweet to open up, perhaps he could distract him.
All that yellow could muster in response was a soft whimper, not wanting to release his stuffy, even slightly. No, he couldn't not do something Blue asked of him, Blue certainly knows best. He hesitantly moved to pull his left boot off, fumbling slightly, eyebrows knitted in a strange amount of concentration. If he couldn't just be good in the first place, he could at least do this without bothering, surely.
Tears, having slowed slightly in the stagnant tension, sprung fresh to his eyes in frustration. It's only been a few seconds of trying to get a grip and tugging pretty pitifully at his boots, but it felt like forever, and Yellow was sleepy.
A warm, blue hand found his, pulling it away with such a gentle touch, Yellow would definitely never be able to even attempt to recreate it. "Here, may I?"
His dignity was shot multiple minutes ago, his inhibitions were nearly there. He nodded weakly, causing his hat to fall off to lie upside down on the floor.
Blue pulled both of Yellow's boots off easily and stood to set them by the door, taking the moment to think. Yellow watched him the entire time through teary eyelashes. His now-free hand moved to hold his own face, pointer resting on his lips. That isn't suspicious, right?
As Blue turned back around, Yellow shied away again, turning his head and hunching over further, as if in shame. Blue ignored it in favor of walking back over. "Alright, darling, what do you say we go to bed, huh?"
Yellow nodded, slowly, and just scooted back and turned to face his back to his pillows, still keeping his eyes trained on Blue. "Mm...kay." He mumbled, his finger now between his lips, eyes drooping slightly.
Blue couldn't help but tilt his head at the behavior, holding out a hand for Yellow's belt. He couldn't sleep with the damn thing, now could he?
They'd slept or took naps together before, and Yellow somehow manages to always forget he has his belt and gun on, but he's always quick to take it off at a small prompt. He just stared in confusion for a moment.
"Your belt, darling." Blue clarifies, chuckling softly as Yellow lets out a soft 'oh'. He removes his finger from his mouth just to fumble at the buckle. If Blue helped him take off his boots, though...
"I, uh... can't get it." He admitted with a soft pout. Blue just laughs again and reaches to unbuckle it with ease, pulling it from his pants and setting it on his dresser - why he needs a dresser is past Blue, he only has a bunch of the same outfit. "Lay down, honey."
Yellow obeys and wriggles under his covers, still holding his stuffy and still looking at Blue, who tugs the blanket up with a smile. "There you go. Comfy?"
"Mhm— yea, thank ya Blue..." Yellow yawned, thumb finding it's way to his mouth this time. "G'nigh'..." He'd mutter, eyes fluttering as he tried to continue following Blue.
"Good night, Yellow." Blue smiled, turning off the lights and backing out of the room, shutting the door with a click.
... they can talk about whatever just happened... tomorrow.
